I would really appreciate any tips or tactics when setting up my warlock cleric I've never played D&D before and I would like to hear what some seasoned veterans have to say or suggest
My big tip, if you’ve never played before, is don’t multi class. Pick warlock or cleric and stick with it. Multiclassing poorly is the easiest way to build an ineffective character. For example, a cleric/warlock would be harder to pull off, since the classes each depend on different primary ability scores, so you’ll spread yourself pretty thin. Not that it can’t be done, it’s just not a great choice for someone new to the game. Play through a campaign single class, so you can understand the trade offs involved in a multiclass.
So if multi-classing is going to spread myself too what would the best character profile be for a high elf with aristocratic background? And what stats would you recommend I max out versus putting what's left for the points?
I'm playing a half-elf with the Noble background and went the Warlock route. Aristocrats would have exemplary manners and often well spoken. That screams high CHA, which happily is the ability for a warlock. I agree with Xalthu; you will dilute the build and be poor at both classes trying to be both. Did you want to have the cleric's healing perks? Be a Celestial Warlock and get them in one class! Want the holy warrior aspect? Go Hexblade. I think if you think about what you wanted from the cleric multi-class, you can find a Warlock build that gets you that flavor and allows you to just focus on CHA, which also plays into a haughty elven of nobility.
Species and background choices can work with any class. That’s a role play choice and really what’s important there is you think it will be a fun character to play. As far as stats, that depends on what you’re doing. If you go warlock, you want your highest score in charisma, clerics want wisdom. In either case, you want a good constitution. And probably a good dex, but that can depend on your subclass.
Let’s start with the basics. What do you want the character to do? Do you have a vision for them?
When you have two casting stats, the first question is which do you want to be good at, and which do you want to borrow from. I have played a warlock with a one level dip in cleric. I stole armor proficiency, first level slots, subclass abilities, etc. Long term the ability to use those 1st level slots on hex rather then wasting a warlock slot on a 1st level spell is really valuable. With point buy you can start with 8,14,12,8,14,15 (7+4+7+9). You will have medium armor/shield giving you an AC from 16-19. Constitution is a bit difficult, but you can take eldritch mind to help the saves.
Spells from Cleric worth playing with: Bless hitting more often and making saves is great, cure wounds is great to upcast with. Long term there will be encounters where bless in the first round is a great choice and leaves you with your big slots for more important things. You also have access to rituals like detect magic. And you can swap spells daily from the cleric list. You also have cleric cantrips like guidance.
I would recommend starting cleric and then going warlock since it makes the most sense to me characterwise, but either mechanically works. You want eldritch blast and agonizing blast from your first two levels of warlock. Since it EB scales with character not warlock level you will see your power boost at level 5 just like everyone else.
I am with Xalthu stick to single class as a new player what Elfdope said is certainly viable for an experianced player but is full of pitfalls for a new player.
Aristocrats can be high charisma, they can also be high wisdom more reserved wisely speaking only when necessary and able to read others insights, in medieval society the clergy were often taken from the noble classes so an an aristocrat could be either a warlock or a cleric.
