Can you use a focus to cast a spell even when that spell doesn't require it?
I've seen nothing to prohibit this. In fact, see the following, both expecting to use items like Rod of the Pack Keeper with non-material-component spells like Eldritch Blast:
It would be worth noting that Magic Missile only has a single damage role which is shared across all projectiles. Using a birch focus would let you get a minimum +3 on a magic missile with an additional +1 for each additional missile. This works out to an average damage of 4.5 per projectile or an instant 49.5 damage on a 9th level slot.

Shavarran Birch Focus
Seems tailor made for Warlocks as it seems like it would add that +1 to the force damage of Eldritch Blast, right?
Not so fast!
Eldritch Blast doesn't have a Material component to be replaced by using a focus.
So the question is:
Can you use a focus to cast a spell even when that spell doesn't require it?

it does say it only effects 1 damage roll of the spell, so i dont think it would ever add more than 1 damage to each cast even with mulitple beams
