I have a son who is majorly in Cthulhu and Lovecraft stores. In games he is playing a Paladin and keeps through love craft references.
He is bored with the Paladin, and wants to roleplay a Gnome Old One Warlock. The gnome matches his roleplay personality. The only concern is the Gnome stats only give a good dex but not a good charisma. Would you give up 2 points for Charisma to Dexitiy for roleplaying?
Though I can't read your mind, I am assuming (and I could be wrong) that what you're asking is:
1) Would my son feel bad about playing a Warlock that cannot do quite as much damage as some of his friends?
2) Does starting with a 14 or 15 Charisma cripple my son's character?
Regards to #1: I think it depends on your son's personality and on who else is playing with him. If the other people in the game are not min/max types, then I doubt it would matter unless the DM is throwing really tough opponents at them. Even if his friends are min/max types, having a good idea of who his character is can make up for that. Also, if you're the DM, then you can arrange the story so that his RP choices have meaning in terms of the story.
Regards to #2: Probably not, unless your son chooses Pacts that rely on having a high Charisma score.
That said, here are some benefits of playing a Gnome warlock:
* Two of the subraces get access to some very useful cantrips/spells as long as your son is creative. This is important to a caster class that doesn't get all that many spells.
* High Dexterity is great for higher initiative and armor class.
* Always active resistance to most forms of magic that aren't evocation spells.
* Gnomes are pranksters. Playing a prankster means your son can stay engaged all the time because he has an excuse for tricking NPCs and even other PCs.

Any opinions?
I would and I have. Having fun is what counts.

Are you using point buy or rolled stats? What would be your sons starting charisma stat? Gnome is a fun race!
Most of the races are balanced around one +2 and one +1; it shouldn't matter to which stats the modifiers are assigned (with DM permission).
He is using the Standard area of 8 10 12 13 14 15

I hope that helps.
