I have a pact of the blade build I'm pretty stoked on for a campaign starting next week (session 0 tonight) - but I cannot for the life of me settle on my invocations.
Look... I know Fiendish Vigor is recommended, but I'm going Fiend for my pact, I'll be fine on temp HP. (ehem, bag of rats?)
Anyone - as a Strength based pactblade w/fighter 1 for masteries, I'm at this.
Level 3:
s18/con16/cha 16
Human - Alert - Wizard Initiate
Masteries: Halberd, Trident, Pike.
Invocations: Chain (for alert initiative swapping and help), Agonizing blast - Green Flame Blade (for consistent damage boost in melee), third????
I've been stuck. Do I go agonizing sword burst? Do I go otherworldly leap for movement? Some other idea?
(NOTE: I'll take pact of the blade and thirsting blade at lvl 6(lvl 5 warlock) when it'll matter for extra attack)
Agonizing Blast with Sword Burst is a pretty good idea. Eldritch Mind might be good if you plan to use Hex a lot.
What spells are you getting from your Magic Initiate (Wizard) feat? That might help inform your decision.
Also, keep in mind that Green-Flame Blade is going to be less useful once you get Thirsting Blade; you may want to swap out that Agonizing Blast at that point.
My spells for initiate are prestidigitation, and mind sliver - lvl 1 spell is silvery barbs.
Sword Burst looks like a like of fun with agonizing for sure. I'm contemplating starting with otherworldly jump - then swapping it out when I get misty step at lvl 4(fighter 1/warlock 3) idk. Eldritch mind also can be good, though with fighter prof and I'm a human - I feel like it's not the most necessary... though if I keep finding I'm losing concentration a lot, I might just need it.
And yeah, when I get to level 6(fighter 1/warlock 5) I do plan on dropping GFB from my rotation.
I do not have the book for Green Flame Blade, only the 2024 book. So not 100% sure on the merits.
But I have found that if you get eldritch blast and add Agonizing blast, it acts as a bow. So that gives you a ranged weapon and no dex required. And if you are level 5(fighter 1/warlock 4) you get 2 attacks with eldritch blast.
yeah, agonizing+eldritch is the classic thing to do - but as a melee gish, I want to maximize my melee hitting.
GFB at low levels is make a melee attack, and on a hit deal your spell mod to another creature w/in5ft --- with agonizing blast - it becomes "on a hit, deal your cha in addition to your normal weapon dmg, as well as an additional amount of damage equal to your charisma to the other target."
Example: I hit goblin 1 with a weapon for d10+attack mod + GFB w/ Agonizing Blast. Flame bounces to goblin 2 w/in 5ft feet of the first and deals cha+agonzing blast.
In my build, that turns out to be: 1d10+4 + 3 to goblin 1 (12.5), and 3+3 to goblin 2(6). - Though I could be bad at calculating averages lol.
At level 5, the cantrip adds 1d8 damage to both goblins. (The primary target and the secondary target)
Now you pair that with a halberd with cleave mastery from a fighter dip - and you're throwing in an additional hit - throw in hex too if you'd like. Great weapon master to get your prof mod on the cleave attack and normal attack. That's two-three dead mobs in theory (depending on health pool).

It's fun!
You still are maxing your range, agonizing+eldritch=Shooting with a bow, and at level 5 you have 3 shots.
