This is going to be a very silly question but I'm new to DnD and the internet is a confusing place. I'm looking at making a Rogue hexblade character but any build guides online are.. Confusing. Most suggest starting either as lvl 1 hex blade or as rogue, which is fine. But. You can't be a hexblade from level 1 as far as I am aware? That's a subclass you get at level 3. Wiki dot also talks about hexblade as though it is something you get from level 1, including its curse abilities. I'm so confused. Can someone explain it like i'm 5?
Ah, I see. Thank you. I had been looking at newer post made within the last year but evidently that wasn't enough. But this clears up the confusion, then. Thank you!
Also, particularly if you're a new player, there's no reason to be going online to look at build guides. D&D is a fairly forgiving game (in most groups), not one where you must optimize for combat efficacy. Decide what you want for your character, and try to build toward that. Do you want sneak attacks? Skills? Magic? All are built in different ways. It'll likely change as you play, anyway.
(Also, there isn't yet a 2024 hexblade, and the 2014 hexblade has a fair amount of redundancy with 24's pact of the blade, so you might want a different pact. For instance, Archfey's Misty Step-fest seems like a good fit for a rogue who focuses on sneak attack-escape.)

Even today people are asking about 2014 rules. So you can't just look at dates. To reiterate jl8e, Hexblade is a 2014 class. Do not use "hexblade" as a search word for 2024.

In the 2014 ruleset, warlocks got their subclass at level 1. Using that ruleset Hexblade at level 1 was extremely powerful.
In the 2024 ruleset, warlocks now get their subclass at level 3.
As you look through the internet for build guides related to hexblade, many will be referring to the 2014 ruleset.
