Hello, I was hoping some of you could help me. I will be starting a nautical adventure soon. The DM is going to start off with adventures from the Ghost of Saltmarsh. Then once we get through those adventures, we will transition into further nautical adventures of his making. We will be getting our own ship early on. We can start at level 5, and we plan on continuing on to level 20 eventually.
I want to play a Pirate Warlock. Here is where my request for help comes in.
1. I have planned out two versions of my character, and would like thoughts on which one you feel is better. One is a straight warlock, and the other has a small sorcerer dip for meta magic, extra low level spell slots, the ability to heal myself in an emergency (or others via my familiar), and the ability to remove harmful effects from myself (or others again via my familiar). Any advise on changes is welcome, though I would like to remain primarily warlock and ranged.
2. If you feel the sorcerer dip is the way to go, when would you recommend I make the dip? I am thinking starting as a pure warlock would be best, as level 5 will allow me to start with the ability to breath underwater and swim via my invocations.
First a suggestion for your DM. There are great adventures in the Ghosts of Saltmarsh for low level characters that look like they’ll be fun to play and run. Start at first level and play through them.
in my experience when I plan more than 2 levels ahead I always make changes to my planned build based on what is happening in the campaign and what the other characters do. D&D is all about the team, not one single character and I’ve found that building my character to enhance decisions that other players in my group make when they build their characters is a lot of fun. I was planning on my current wizard being a diviner and he turned into a conjurer for example.
I’d definitely go to fifth level as a warlock before multiclassing for the Gift of the Depths, and I might go all the way to get Foresight before multiclassing. That spell is just so incredible!
Is Shillelagh a good pick for you? When you’re caught in melee with an AC of 13 I’d think that withdrawing from melee and using ranged attacks would be a better option than engaging in melee.
The only benefit that you’ll get from Alter Self is unlimited, minor shape changing to disguise yourself. You already have one of the other two benefits and there are much better options for you than staying in melee to use the other benefit. If you keep that, I’d pick up the Friends cantrip for after you’ve used your Charm Person for the day.
Because you’re focusing on fire to the extent that you are, do you want to pick up the feat that lets your fire based spells overcome fire resistance? It’s an option, but it’s a tough decision to make because you have Eldritch Blast and your other feats are great for your build.
Awesome, thank you. You made some good points I hadn't thought of. I will definitely make some minor tweaks based on your suggestions. I appreciate the feedback.
I will also discuss with our DM maybe starting at level one per your suggestion.
You’re welcome. Those low level adventures are something that I’m looking forward to running myself as a DM.
Two other thoughts. You really don’t have any need for a crossbow other than using it to “throw” a rope a long distance. Plus you can have more than just 2 rituals but you have to find the rest of them. Start looking for ritual spells in the form of spellbooks or scrolls at first level. It will take a few levels until you can do anything with them but you never know when you’ll find one. I’d consider Detect Magic, Alarm, and Leomund’s Tiny Hut as high priority rituals to find!
Yeah, I only have the crossbow because it was part of the starting gear. I spoke with the DM, and the rest of the group, and we have decided to go ahead and start at level one.
I am quite excited to experience some nautical adventures. I've only been playing a couple of months, but I haven't done anything out at sea.
I will definitely keep an eye out for those ritual spells. Thank you again for your help.

Here are the two builds I came up with:

Nice builds, I like both of them.
