What sort of character do you want to play? Not just in terms of game mechanics (weapons and spells are both viable warlock builds), but the important question is what patron you want to serve.
The fiend and I wanted to make a high charisma and really reserved (not spell charisma, character charisma) character that has gone through a lot trying to get great power. I want him to be chaotic good, not cuz he does what he wants but because he will do what he thinks is right. I would like to have the "fiend" be Phenax.
One big thing is to set expectations with warlocks. Don’t go in expecting it to be a full caster like a wizard or sorcerer. You won’t be blowing things up with magic turn after turn in a fight. It’s more like a ranged combatant (like a magical archer), spamming eldritch blast. But then, you will have a couple spells and some invocations that will give you some tricks to pull out sometimes, and can give you interesting options both in and out of combat.
And be prepared to be more excited about short rests than probably 80% of the rest of the party.
a couple ground rules that you'll find in most other places, but I'll lay them down for you right here!
1. Start with at least 16 in CHA.
2. pick up eldritch blast as one of your cantrips
3. pick up the 'agonizing blast' invocation that you unlock at lvl 2.
After that, you can't mess up a warlock. You might want warcaster or res:con at lvl 4, or just shoot to 20 CHA by lvl 8. Whatever, either's fine. Of course, there's so much you can do with their invocations and use their spell list to your advantage, but that can easily take up essays worth of discussion lol. Just follow the 3 points, and research the rest as you go along.

I want to make a warlock. I don't know what's good for them. Tips, please...
