Question: If I cast dragons breath on my imp will he lose invisibility when he “exhales energy”. He is not using his action to attack or cast a spell so it sounds like this would work. I also shouldn’t have to give up my attack.Thoughts?
Note: I’m thinking about getting the spell by taking a dip into Sorcerer.
I’m not sure how useful this would be because Dragon’s breath is it concentration spell but damn it’s so cool.
The imp is still technically casting a spell/activating a effect of a spell (since Dragon's Breath is basically a cone breath attack) so the invisibility would drop as per the nature of it. Sorry my friend but no OP invisible fire spewing imp.

Because the imp is invisible there is a lot of GM fiat on the stealth rules.
You know where the imp is, when it's invisible, as so can target it with DisAdv. That said if it tries to Stealth it would probably have Advantage on the check due to being invisible. That said breathing Dragon's Breath or Helping in combat probably "breaks stealth" and so would leave it open to be attacked.
That said you don't get AoO on invisible targets, unless you have some other way to "see" them.
All that said, it's entirely GM fiat and it's acceptable for the GM to argue that after a certain distance it would be difficult/impossible for passive perception to track an invisible, flying, target.

I personally think a 3 level dip in Sorcerer to get 1 spell for your familiar is probably a terrible idea, but we're talking about if it would work at all. I think it's done best when you have 2 magic user characters. Then you can do this combo at 3rd lvl.

It goes without saying that I’m taking the three levels of sorcerer for reasons other than that 1 spell: 6 additional low level spell slots, access to 1st and 2nd level sorcerer and cleric spells (divine soul), meta magic and sorcerous origin feature. That’s a pretty good haul if you are willing to forgo Eldritch Master.
I think there are plenty of ways to make your Warlock familiar effective in combat...Still got that wand magic missiles from LMOP? Give it to your imp...that works also. If the only function of a pact of the chain familiar is to scout and use the help action then the pact probably not worth taking. A tome lock is almost as affective with an owl famaliar. So pimp that imp...there are plenty of ways!
You havnt taken into account the fact that the Imp can use its action, then move (even 5-10 feet in any direction would increase ur chances of not being hit drastically). Then repeat next turn.
An imp that can, every turn, do minimum 3d6 dmg....while remaining invisible...for a measly 10 gp (to cast again if imp dies somehow) is beyond worth it.

Yes.
Technically the imp is not casting the spell, the warlock is, and it's not "attacking" as that requires a d20 roll.
So the imp can breath dragon's breath and still be invisible.
That said the imp used it's action to breath, and not Hide. So the enemy will still roughly know where the imp is.
As using that ability will likely be considered giving it's position away.
So it can be attacked with disadvantage? I assume this also happens when the nasty little imp takes the help action?

What are you using to get Dragon's Breath?
