My Sorcerer (8), Wizard (5), Noble Knight Golden Dragonborn [whose Goddess is the Red Knight] found himself gaining a level in Celestial Warlock, [ His Colonel in the Guard of the celestial bureaucracy's Palace of the Four Winds is 'The Platinum Dragon'. ] Only after did I realize that warlock spells per RAW use any slot. And sorcerer and wizard spells as well, even the; short rest, warlock slots. Then looking at the invocations coming up realized I couldn't tell if the Prerequisites in levels, were only Warlock, or spellcaster [think it would have to say that like spell slots] or total character levels.
The prerequisites for Warlock invocations are your Warlock levels.
Also, you don't even get to choose a Warlock invocation until you take a 2nd level in Warlock, so you'll have to decide how many levels you're going down the path in Warlock.
If you are taking three levels in Warlock, you can go with Pact of the Tome and get the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation, that's one of the strongest invocations.
[spell[Eldritch Blast[/spell] is not linked to your number of Warlock levels, so you'll most likely want to take two levels in Warlock and get Agonizing Blast and one more invocation, possibly Repelling Blast. A two level dip in Warlock is very popular to pick up Eldritch Blast + these two invocations. Combine Eldritch Blast with Hex and you'll do a huge amount of damage. Throw in some [spell[Fireball[/spell]s on top of that, and you'll be fairly powerful. Although that's a better build at lower levels: at level 15, it's not nearly as good as it is at level 7.
Doing Sorcerer 8 Wizard 5 Warlock 2 is definitely not a good build for being a powerful: you'll be level 15, and with a 7th level spell slot, but not knowing any spell above 4th level. Multiclassing a lot of times makes your character weaker than single class characters of the same level, and I would put the Sorcerer 8 Wizard 5 Warlock 2 firmly in that category. If you're doing this build for roleplaying reasons, it's fine. It's a lot of fun to prioritize role playing over being a min-maxed powerhouse character.
He is going 4th level mainly because he has 8 sorcerers now, and going to 8 wizard, which leaves 4 for warlock. He is a Magic-user.. and actually collects wizard spells as a vice.
P.S.; I read the stupid paragraph at least twice before I asked here, and only saw the Raw for it after you answered and I went back. **Face-palm**
I would suggest in this case to go Sorcerer 12, wizard 5, warlock 3. That'll get you enough to get your pact, a last ASI and through 6th level spells in Sorcerer. Definitely interesting as a potential character who reaches a point and then opts to retire to teach others.
