Hi yall, I’m fairly new to dnd (currently in my second campaign ever) and going from a barbarian to a spell caster has given me anxiety on spell choices haha. We just reached level 13 which means it’s fancy mystic arcanum time. I was excited going into this level since it’s a handful of non-concentration spells, but suddenly I’m not sure which I want. Hoping for suggestions.
My Warlock tends to be the “Swiss army knife” for the group. We need stealth? Invisibility. Fighter drops to single digits? Hey look a giant ape showed up where he was standing. Flying enemies?...fly. Etc. So my gut reaction was to grab force cage as it would be a great tool to control no magic enemies. But the appeal of a no concentration form of extra damage in the case of Crown of Stars and Finger of death have me licking my lips. As is tradition Eldritch “wanna see my cantrip” blast is my main Dps, but a extra option of a high level spell seemed like a plausible option over another crowd control spell.
As you can tell I’m conflicted haha. Any general suggestions? Assume we’re in a vacuum here as I don’t want any possibilities of spoilers in the campaign I’m currently in.
I don’t really like any of them. Since they’re one time a day spells I’d pick one that’s guaranteed to have an effect, meaning Power Word - Pain isn’t an option. And I’d lean towards one with a longer duration unless Plane Shift is useful in your campaign.
I’d be torn between Crown of Stars and Force Cage.

I spoke with my dm and the tuning fork needed for plane shift is not something I’m likely going to find anytime soon. Force cage was my first gut reaction too so I think I’ll go with that....maybe lol
I like both spells. I would ask yourself: how often do I use my bonus action? Are you casting hex and using something like Maddening Hex, if so maybe go with Forcecage.
I actually used Forcecage last night to save my hexblade's life.
I was almost dead and was covering the retreat for the other party members, and just before I got killed I threw Forcecage down around myself making it the 10 foot box. I then took a short rest and used 7 hit dice to get almost full hp back. Then just as the forcecage faded I used Misty Step to port away from the enemy (who had been pacing around the box) and succeeded in running away.
Technically the forcecage should have fallen 1 round before the short rest ended but the DM was nice and thought it was a cool use of the spell.

Force Cage is the one that I would go with.

Make sure you have the materials for it. Ruby dust worth 1500gp is quite a lot.
