I know Hexblade patron would be better but was considering a GOO Pack of the Blade character and was wondering if using Mage Armor (Armor of Shadows) would be good enough? Plan on him being a finesse fighter with the appropriate Blade pact invocations. Maxing DEX ASAP.
Multiclassing is not allowed.
planning on Half Elf for the CHA boost, plus DEX & CON. Yeah, I know this changes with Tashas.
Any thoughts on this type of build? Before hexblade I’m sure people did this a lot.
Without magical items your maximum AC will be 18, and that’s with a dexterity of 20. You will be getting hit enough that I’d consider Armor of Agathys a necessity since it gives you a nice amount of temporary HP and it does decent damage to anyone who hits you in melee.
But plate armor also gives an AC of 18 without any magical items too, so that’s not too bad. You just won’t have many HP.
Keep in mind you will have only two spell slots for a long time and don't get a whole lot more later on so using one for Mage Armor in every fight seriously hinders you to do other cool stuff (like casting Fly to attack a flying target with Eldritch Smite so it falls to the ground for example). I'd probably take the Moderately Armored feat instead to gain proficiency with Medium Armor and Shields. It's also a half-feat so you still get to raise your DEX as well.
Armor of Agathys will still be very valuable though. I even took it on my Heavy Armor Bladelock (multiclass with first level in Fighter).
I think the OP was talking about the invocation since he mentioned Armor of Shadows which gives you infinite usage to mage armor.

I thought about this build as well for long now but never found a good deal to make this work properly. The problem with GOO in general that the spell list given to you focuses more on CC which needs a high DC just to make the enemies get effected and with being dex based it means you need to focus more on your dex instead of your cha so.... it kinda doesn't help. Also afaik most people went with Fiend blade lock way more than any of the others.

It's perfectly doable, and a lot of warlocks did exactly what you're planning on. Alternatively, you could make a mountain dwarf with proficiency in medium armor.
Thanks for the replies. Sorry for it being poorly worded, yes I had intended for the invocation for mage armor. I had considered mountain dwarf for the armor and going STR for attacks (plus the dwarf weapon proficiencies) and then raising CHA for spells, figured I could get use with Mirror Image to help offset lower HP and lower spell DC until I could get it higher. I might be more concerned taking GOO as patron if the extended spell list was automatically known spells, but since they are just options to choose from there are just as good of spells to select, like the aforementioned Armor of Agathys for the limited spell slots.
You can do it, but you're going to get hit a lot; mage armor really isn't enough for a frontline combatant.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
