My Halfling Warlock has the Devil Sight Invocation giving him the permanent ability to see in magical and non-magical darkness.
The Darkness spell can be cast on an object to emanate from...which includes the wick of a candle in a hooded lantern. If this were a Light spell, the light can be partially or completely blocked/covered when cast in such a way...channeling the light into a cone.
Does Darkness work the same way? Would I be able to create a lantern with a temporary cone of darkness in a dungeon crawl? I imagine the effect would be that the party members behind the lantern would be able to see where they are walking, but not within the projected field of darkness. My warlock would be able to see danger ahead. Creatures with or without dark vision would not be able to see the approaching party. Oh, and my imp familiar would likely be hovering a few feet ahead of the party carrying the lantern.
what stratagems would you use with the Darkness + Devil Sight combo?
Darkness + Devilsight is a classic warlock tactic. Its not a cone though, more of a sphere centered on what ever you cast it on. Im not sure if it can be directed, but if you cover the item the darkness fades. Usually its a sword or other melee weapon so you can get in close to foes and cut them with advantage while they suffer disadvantage.
The lamp idea is nice but does not work imho. Wording of Darkness is, it goes around corners. So opening the lamp would not result in a cone of darkness. Rather the sphere would be Back.
