I'm having a hard time getting a clear answer from google about this. If an abjuration wizard casts an abjuration spell from an item, such as (mild LMoP spoiler)
The Staff of Defense from LMoP, "The staff has 10 charges, which are used to fuel the spells within it. With the staff in hand, you can use your action to cast one of the following spells from the staff if the spell is on your class's spell list: mage armor (1 charge) or shield(2 charges). No components are required."

Arcane Ward
Starting at 2nd level, you can weave magic around yourself for protection. When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, you can simultaneously use a strand of the spell’s magic to create a magical ward on yourself that lasts until you finish a long rest.
So yes.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
Really good catch by the way! I’m optimizing a Mark of Warding Dwarf Abjurer for future campaigns and never thought about Magic items. Cool!
To me it really depends on the wording. With the above example the item says you are casting the spell, the difference being that the source is the item rather than your spell slot. I can imagine an item that says it activates the ability rather than you though.

does that casting activate their arcane ward?
