How many times would your PC need to witness an enemy Illusionist (10th - 14th level) die during combat before you believed the Illusionist was dead? Assume that everyone has equipment suitable for their level. You may or may not know the enemy caster is an Illusionist.
If I have reason to doubt whether the mage using lots of illusions is actually dead? Uh, yes? Also Passive Arcana is a thing as well. A Wizard or otherwise in arcana educated character shouldn't need to take their time to know that illusions either usually don't last very long or have easy ways to verify what they are.
Which books have the rules for passive Arcana? I’ve never heard of it before.
I just want to hear about _legal_ responses to the Illusionist. The more I hear about _legal_ responses (and I am certain that they exist), the better I get at addressing those _legal_ responses.
I love the Illusionist, but I know there are ways to bring them down.
You are referring to skills such as passive Perception? I thought you were referring to something else a revision of those rules because those rules don’t say that passive skills don’t require an action nor does the player decide when they are used
so just for reference, RAW passive skills are only in effect when the dm calls for them, for a task that they want the player to possibly do without a die roll, unless there are specific rules relating to them, so passive arcana would not be a thing on a wizard unless the dm calls for it, so...thats not a very legal ruling on his part, also, phantasmal force, has very specific rules, so an arcana check wouldnt be enough to break it, you need an actively rolled arcana check, RAW
anyways, if I know its an illusionist, I will cast dispel magic on them after killing, just to make sure its not a clever illusion, then double tap
if not, then that will probably succeed the first few times before I get dispel magic and take to using it on enemy casters when they die
Generally, the rules determine when a standard save is rolled. Passive checks are entirely up to the DM.
Regardless. as the player doesn’t decide when passive checks are rolled, they will have to make a standard action to roll an Investigation check or Perception check against the DC of the spell.
The DM doesn’t allow passive checks because only the DM can roll them. He’d be allowing himself to roll them.
Ya don't roll passive checks. That's the point of a passive check. No roll. It's just 10 + Ability Mod + Proficiency if relevant.

You can never know if you cast dispel magic because they might have readied their action to recast when that happens or counterspell it. Also they could just cast mold earth or something like that and your passive arcana would tell you there is magic, doesn't mean that body is an illusion though.

There are no right or wrong answers.
Adopt the Zombie Apocalypse rule of double tapping something to make sure its dead.
Even when you check the corpse, you don't know if you are under the influence of a Phantasmal Force.
And I’m the middle of combat, are. You going to take a standard action to roll an Investigation or an Arcana check?

I stand corrected. You are correct, sir.
