Me and my party are fighting a taller humanoid creature (haven't asked the DM if its large or huge). So I was wondering if it be valid by RAW to create a floating wall of force dome that extends around the humanoid to it's shins or so and then just having my barbarian go and smack his ankles around. (I know he'd probably get cover maybe? but I could just mold earth my barbarian down to a nice swinging level as well).
Couldn't find anything online addressing this niche case so thought I would pull a Vygotsky.
You can create it as a dome and you can place it where you like and it stays in place, even in mid-air. So, yes, your tactic is RAW. Some people may waste time trying to argue about the dome having a floor or not but given how much choice you have with the spell, it would be silly. But even for the nitpckiest of DMs, you can also just make it a cube without a floor instead - since you can choose the "panels" and configure however you want.
But just hacking at ankles means they get 3/4 cover (+5 to AC). And if you're using mold earth to prevent that AC bonus you're gven them enough space to leave the trap. You'd be better just splashing oil under the small gap and then lighting it to cook them.

While you can create a Wall of force in the shape of an hemispherical dome free floating in midair,, If the wall cuts through a creature's space when it appears, the creature is pushed to one side of the wall (your choice which side).
I'd rule that if the creature is too large to be be fully contained inside the dome it would be pushed outside it though since nothing can physically pass through the wall. It's also an opinion shared by the Devs on twitter.
also i would point out that its a rather large dome the creature could back up out of reach of the barbarian or try and dig its way out with a sword. the creature probably has further reach than you do
