I'm currently level 3 in AL and have been playing around with Abjuration Wizard. I went deep gnome to take advantage of the Svirfneblin Magic feat to allow unlimited nondetection. However, going that route means I'm overlapping abilities between gnomes and abjuration - the spell resistance.
War Mage sounds fun with a forest or rock gnome because I still get the spell resistance. Plus I get access to Fade Away and Squat Nimbleness feats due to the AL restrictions of +1.
Both classes seem fairly straight forward as a wizard and have their own unique ways of surviving. Should I save my Abjuration Wizard run for a different race so I'm not overlapping abilities?
I have a 5th level Svifneblin in AL, before that game came apart. I look forward to using him in the future. I took 1st lvl in Knowledge Cleric (medium armor and shield are nice) and the rest of it Abjuration wizard. (14 Dex, Scale Mail and Shield is AC 18!) I've often ran into the front, taken the Dodge action, and tanked for the party. I use my Reaction for Shield to get AC 23. If you take Bonfire as a cantrip it works quite well.
The At-Will non-detection is amazing for keeping the barrier up, and it stop you from using up healing on what I call "wandering damage tables" (traps, failed athletic rolls, ambushes, etc...)
And yes Abjuration Wizard's 14th level Spell Resistance does replace and improve Gnome Cunning. But you have a long way to go, and many an enemy spell before this is a problem. I'd rather have Gnome Cunning for level 1-13, and have it be superfluous then not have it for 14 levels.
Also at 6th level you can use your Ward to defend other party members, which is really nice.
Thanks for the input! Though I'm not one to mult-class much. Out of my 6 characters that aren't level 1, only 1 is multi-class, which is my Arcane Trickster/Bladesinger, and even that I wasn't the most keen on as I'm missing out on playing a full wizard gish. I also won't get high enough in Wizard to use song of defense as I mostly want rogue in this route, but that's a whole 'nother conversation.
I still have time to play around in T1 before I make my decision.
I do like the ward being useful for helping out my teammates at 6th level.
I took my Abjuration all the way to 20 (well 19 and 1 level of rogue at the end) and never regretted being Abjuration. The ward is amazing since you are very squishy and adding your proficiency to counterspell and dispel magic is just amazing.

I recommend Abjuration.
