I am told War Caster is important starting 4 to 8 range (and beyond) if you are using concentration spells like control and most support spells. That said, I lean towards boosting Intelligence.
For my money I would take war caster just to make yourself feel more like a caster. Maybe I just like being able to cast a spell as an opportunity attack as opposed to being forced to make a melee attack. The spell must have a casting time one action and must target only that creature.
Thank you for the feedback so far. This game is so much fun for this very reason - the options out there. I am leaning more and more to the ASI. I set up my scores originally so I could get those two bonuses, but as I have been learning more, the other options have become more appealing.
Warcaster is overrated for a wizard. You have at least 3 front line fighters in your party, just do your best to maneuver into places you are less likely to be attacked.

If that's a Moon Druid, a Hunter, a Valor Bard, any Paladin really(except maybe Redemption), and any other Barbarian subclass than Ancestral Guardian even with that still they're all front line fighters that improves the need for support, and War Caster becomes obsolete Rage will trap most enemies, Divine Smite will destroy them and the Ranger and Bard will pick the rest off I'd take the ASI then Alert if you get to level 8, and if you get past +2 to intelligence, then maybe warcaster although +2 dexterity or constitution would make you more durable.

I am playing a Gnome Divination wizard leaning heavy into control/support for the party. We are a six man party (Paladin, Barb, Ranger, Druid, Bard).
My stats are as follows:
Str 8 Dex 13 Con 16 Int 17 Wis 12 Cha 8
The options I see at level 4 are:
1. Increase Dex to 14 and Int to 18
2. Take Alert to aid getting off control spells early as often as possible
3. Take Warcaster
I am really torn on which path to take. Alert sounds like fun, but not being experienced I don’t want to hamper myself in the next 4 - 8 levels.
It’s my first campaign, so thank you for the input.

With stats like yours, I think the possibility of more effective spells and a higher AC are too good to pass up. I would take the ASI.
I agree completely with gaining two +1 bonuses! That’s what I would do too.

The increase in Int also allows you to prepare another spell. You are increasing effectiveness and versatility in your support role.
Take a half feat to increase your intelligence and gain a ability, Fade Away is wonderful for this.
