Hello all. I'm playing a wizard who wants to advance the use of mage hand. Creating more of them, more uses of it, maybe increase the weight it can carry per. All while being a utility spell. Any ideas or advice for not only the mechanics, but the rp in game process to improve it. I'm thinking a good way is to look at other spells that can grow in number, like magic missile. Maybe even eventually create a leveled version where I use levels, and perhaps a device to act as a permanent mage hand.
Personally, if I were your DM, I would say that if you want to homebrew a spell that was a buffed mage hand, I would work with you on creating a first level spell that scales with level.
Off the top of my head, as a first level spell I would just increase the range to 60 ft OR allow for controlling it with a bonus action, but not both. Maybe increase the weight limit to 15-20 pounds. Keep the duration and make it concentration.
During scale up, I would say that you can either summon 1 extra hand for each level above 1st, or increase the weight limit by 5-10 pounds per level above first. Maybe even increase the duration to 10 minutes at 4-5th level and 1 hour at 7-8th level? I don't think I would allow a mix of that, but that's mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to worry about figuring that out during play. >D
As for the in-game RP process of developing that, I think that mostly depends on how your wizard learns, or would create, new spells. You could do something as simple as practice and more practice with mage hand during S/L rests. Maybe the DM can make some sort of side-quest for a spell scroll with this on it that you're character can learn about and try to get?

I like to think that the natural evolution of mage hand is arcane hand.
Ultimately, I agree with Dx.

Those are my thoughts off the top of my head.
