My DM and another player who plays a fighter think that my Wizard is overpowered because of all the spells that a wizard has to chose from when learning a new spell. I play a High Elf Wizard so I get an extra cantrip to start, and as you all know a wizard starts out with six first level spells in your spell book of which you can only cast two per rest cycle. You only get to learn two (basically for free per level) to add to your book. If you are lucky enough to find a scroll with a spell of your level of casting you can scribe it into your book at some cost and time. I suppose if you are in a big city or find a wizard guild you could expand your spell book for a price, all this requires time, money and luck. I am the only dedicated spell caster in the group, the only other is a Ranger. Does anyone else play with fighter types that think that Wizards are overpowered? Thanks.
I’ve played an abjuration Wizard from 1-20 and loved it. At lower levels you are pretty bad and very squishy when a fighter or Druid will totally overshadow what you can do. But as you level up you will really see what makes a Wizard great.
A lot of classes are OP at some point in their progression, the Wizard being a late bloomer. Fighters are great from level one, get a spike at 5, and again at their third attack. Druids are stupidly OP at lvl 2 if you go moon (2 dire wolf 37 hp wild shapes on top of your normal HP and a couple heal spells). That’s just another thing I love about this game. A party that is made up of the same characters will feel completely different from one tier to the next. Gives each class its time to shine at different stages.
Wizards are not that overpowered. that thing you said about their spells is what makes them unique from other casters, but that ability is powerful enough to really carry the whole class. The wizard is the best caster in the game at casting a variety of different, powerful spells. but they are not OP. pretty sure.
