Advice for playing and roleplaying as a transmutation wizard? I want to play one at some point, and was wondering what kind of person is typically driven towards learning transmutation magic.
Just look at Caleb in Campaign 2 of Critical Role. Or any of the real world alchemists who wanted to turn lead into gold.
Just think of one core belief that wants to make a person want to change one thing to something else. Was your beloved turned into stone by a Medusa? Did your con-man father leave you a box full of copper coins instead of the platinum you were promised over and over again in his newest scheme? Why does the orphanage you grew up in have crappy hole-filled wood walls when stone would be much better and make the kids there more comfortable on those long winter nights?
Someone who wishes to free things from the constraints of their physical form. After all, why should a boulder not dream of being as light as a feather? Why should an artichoke not be articulate?
Also, this class is cool if you ever want to reenact the wizard duel from the Disney movie, The Sword in the Stone, or if you want to turn yourself into a Dragon like Malificent did in Sleeping Beauty.
It can help a wizard with very low hp get bumps to their AC and hit points potentially.

I think Full Metal Alchemist is really inspiring as well. Transmutation to the bones.
