So I have a Wizard PC with two Spellbooks - his primary spellbook and his spare spellbook. Now... two of the spells he has in his primary spellbook cannot be found in his spare spellbook because he hasn't had enough gold to transfer them across.
Now - I have the character all sheeted up here on D&D Beyond and he has two spellbooks in his inventory. How do I tell my character sheet that one spellbook has one list of spells while the second spellbook has another?
You have to describe what colour and what arcane symbols bears the Main Spellbook's front cover and the second Spellbook. If your char can recognise which spellbook is the main, then you are doing it fine. Or else roll an Insight check.....
Do you mean so know which is which on character sheet equipment?
Select spellbook and in sidebar select to customize. You can change name or add note to the item.
Telling them apart is not the problem in any sense. What I'm curious to know is this:
When I learn spells as a Wizard character, they are assumed to go into my (primary) Spellbook. No issues there. Now... in keeping with the "Your Spellbook" Sidebar in the Class description, I've decided that my character needs a spare Spellbook. The issue is not telling them apart in-game (they have quite distinct appearances) nor out-of-game (I have created customised items for each Spellbook). The issue is that - at the moment - my character has not had the financial resources (a.k.a. the gold) to copy every single spell from his primary Spellbook to his spare Spellbook. As a result, the spells found in each book differ (with the spare Spellbook obviously having less spells).
Is there a way to - through my character sheet such as through the Spells tab on my character sheet, for example - distinguish between which spells are in which Spellbook? Or is that something I will have to make note of outside the character sheet?
add 2 spellbooks to your inventory. you can't separately customize two of the same type of item so you'd edit the notes for the list of spells in one/both of your books and just know that the other spells are only in the second spellbook.
same as option 1 but just list all the spells by book (example "SB1: firebolt, sleep, etc. SB2: find familiar, etc. Both SB: sleep, etc).
add 1 spellbook to your inventory and list the spells in the notes....then create a custom item, calling it 'spellbook2' with its own notes and own list of spells.
edit the spells
each spell has a customizable notes section so pick one spellbook and for spells in that spellbook, write 'SB 1' or 'SB 1&2' or something in the customized notes section'....customizing the spell puts a little red asterisk by the spell when you look at your list of spells.....so any spell with a red asterisk is in one spellbook (or both), and any spell without an asterisk is just in the other spellbook.
you could do the same as the prior bullet, but make the note in every spell for either SB1, SB 2, or both - i don't like this option though as then all your spells would have a red asterisk, which then means the asterisk isn't a visual cue and it'd probably be easier to edit spellbooks vs spells.
There’s the notes section on the character sheet where you can write in anything you like. You can already assume that your main spellbook has all the spells you know, so you could just make a list of what’s in the spare in the notes section. Then it’s pretty easy to add to it when you have the time and money to copy one over into the spare. I imagine the spare will only be used in emergencies, like losing your main book, or on the fairly rare occasion that you are adding to it. Since it doesn’t seem like you’ll really need to refer to it very often, a plain text list feels simplest, at least, to me it does.

few options imo - with two different approaches:
edit the spellbooks
edit the spells
