I have this idea but I cant figure out how I want to go about choosing my spells. I have a couple half ideas that I just can flesh out all the way...need some help from some veteran players and such.
So I would like to make a card wizard that in my head is something like Yugioh mixed with Gambit, by throwing cards prepared with spells that I have infused (spell components) into the cards. I want to make my spell list either completely random or random but make a table with a set of spell groups that I would roll to see which group I would have prepared for the day ( if that makes sense). Here are a couple of my ideas. This is also all dependent on a DM allowing me to do something like this without spell components or figuring out a way to use spell components in the process...same with spell slots.
1. make a list of groups that correspond to what level I am currently at Ex. At lvl 3 a Wizard gets 3 cantrips, 4 lvl 1 spells, and 2 lvl 2 spells. I would make 8 groups with 3 cantrips, 4 lvl 1 spells, and 2 lvl 2 spells. I would have them put together before hand and then when I would prepare my spells for the day, I would roll a D8 and whatever I rolled would be the list of spells I would prepare for the day.
2.Use a real deck of playing cards (Jokers included) and each of the number cards have random spells attached to them. The face cards would have spells and then an extra saving throw success and failure aspect to them. The joker card would make me have to roll on the wild magic table.
3. I just use the wild magic table and roll for every attack when using a spell card.
4. Use the Official deck of Arcane spell cards and only choose the amount of spells according to my level EX: At level 3 a Wizard gets 3 cantrips, 4 level 1 spells, and 2 level 2 spells. so I would randomly draw 9 cards and that would be my prepared spells until I was able to prepare new ones. I would only have up to the highest level spell I am able to cast in the random draw pile.
5. Any idea that is much better than mine...need help
-start of each combat I can draw for my cards/spells. 1. Per the number of spells equal to spell level. 2. Able to use an action to reshuffle all cards or some for a certain amount. 3. Can use a bonus action set amount of cards (spell level) burn a card to draw a new one.
- During combat 1. Draw a card at the end of your turn ( plan for next round, and always have a full deck in your hand) 2. Able to use an action to reshuffle all cards or some for a certain amount(ex. 2 for 1). 3. Can use a bonus Action to burn a card to draw a new one.
-Out of combat 1. can use any spell equal to my current level. 2. can only cast spells once per long/short rest (DM discretion) 3. Can recover cards/spells after a long/short rest (DM discretion) 4. Ritual spells can be used whenever (DM discretion)
-Learned spells (DM discretion) 1. After a set amount of uses I actually learn the spell and am able to use it whenever A. Cantrips- 5 uses B. L1 to L3- 10 uses C. L4 to L6- 15 uses D. L7 and up- 20 uses
I would say just cast the spells, and ask to use a deck of cards as a spellcasting focus. Random spells can be really unfun, since you could screw your whole team over with a fireball when they need a hold person on the enemy. You can flavour casting the spells as shuffling your deck then picking the top one, or maybe you just have some magical luck letting you cast the spell/picking the card you want everytime. It also relieves the stress for the DM having to remember your rules every time you cast a spell.
