My Level 5 Tiefling War Wizard (who specializes in fire damage due to the Flames of Phlegethos feat) just got a Ring of Spell Storing. It’s my first RoSS and I need advice! I realize there are lots of different strategies - including giving the ring to a familiar (which doesn’t interest me).
The rest of the party includes a Light Cleric, Thief Rogue, and Gloom Stalker Ranger. We’re playing Tomb of Annihilation (no spoilers please!).
Here are a few options I’ve considered:
1. Load the ring with Shield and/or Absorb Elements for extra protection. Would that be overkill given that my war wizard has access to Arcane Deflection?
2. Load the ring with healing spells from the other spell casters (Healing Word, Cure Wounds, and/or Goodberry). Our frontline cleric seems to go down a lot, so having a back-up healer would be nice. Though I don’t see my War Wizard as the healer-type!
3. Load the ring with concentration-based buff/debuff spells from the Light Cleric list (e.g., Bless, Bane, Faerie Fire) and give the ring to the rogue. This would allow my War Wizard to concentrate on other things, such as Hypnotic Pattern, Web, or Dragon’s Breath (for my owl familiar).
4. Load the ring with damage spells (e.g., Magic Missile, Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds, Fireball) to use when my War Wizard runs out of spell slots or needs access to different damage types.
5. Load the ring with spells I might not prepare, but might need in certain circumstances (e.g., Misty Step, Levitate, Fly, Counterspell, Thunderwave).
Personally I like options 3 (from any of the casters' lists, not just the cleric) and 5 the best. Spreading around the concentration burden to martials is always handy, but having a way to cast situational spells while freeing up preparation slots is pretty good too. I'm not sure which one I like better.
Having a bit of extra blasting or defense is nice for a war wizard, but I'm not sure whether that's the best course of action. An extra counterspell or dispel magic up your sleeve is pretty nice for power surge, though.
I actually never used a RoSS myself, but I found really clever the option 3. Having several good Concentration spells running at the same time is wonderful.
Truthfully the Ring of Spell Storing is designed for non-spell casters. That is because you have to be attuned to it to use the spell, not to load it with spells. So someone else wears the ring and you load it.
So you give it to your ally, the fighter or thief and fill it with spells for them to use.
I have found that the most useful spells to load it with are:
1) Reaction spells, such as Shield (amazing what this does to the fighter's AC), Absorb Energy or Counterspell (so when you counterspell something and fail, they have a chance to do the same).
2) Any Concentration spell that you do not want to concentrate on - let them do it. Greater Invisibility, Haste, Fly are great combo.s
If you ARE going to wear it yourself, get your cleric to put spells in it. Lots of good choices, such as Healing Word, Spirit Guardians, Death Ward, Lesser Restoration, Revivify (For when the cleric is killed)
I've always liked the idea of giving this to the non-spellcasters myself. Putting spells that will buff the Fighter, Rogue or Ranger, such as the ones that were listed above. Haste and Mirror Image, Greater Invisibility and Shield, 5 Shield Spells, so on and so forth.
If you're set on keeping the ring for yourself, I would place spells that would helpful for yourself or ones that you don't want Counterspelled. If you want multi-heals for the party, You could have the ranger cast Healing Spirit into it and you get a concentration heal that you can move around with you or place on your companions.
