Inside this heart-shaped box are eight unusually shaped chocolates. Each chocolate is beautifully crafted, with unique and delicate designs that evoke imagery of the Feywild. The box weighs 1/2 pound plus 1/8 pound for each chocolate it contains.
You can use an action to remove a chocolate from the box and eat it. The chocolate begins to magically melt as soon as it is removed from its heart-shaped container, and its magic is lost if uneaten by the end of your turn. Roll a d8 and consult the following table to determine which chocolate you eat, and its corresponding effect.
As part of the action to remove a chocolate from the box, you can choose to make a DC 17 Intelligence (Investigation) check to attempt to identify the chocolate before it is eaten. On a success, you can roll twice on the table and choose which roll to use. On a failure, roll twice on the table, and your DM chooses which roll to use.
d8 | Chocolate |
1 | Caramel. You are unable to speak for 1 minute, as chewy caramel cements your teeth together. |
2 | Cherry Cordial. The unexpected combination of flavor and texture leaves you retching and reeling. You are incapacitated until the end of your next turn. |
3 | Coconut. The sound of chomping fills your ears, as you chew a seemingly endless amount of coconut shavings. You are deafened for 1 minute. |
4 | Espresso Dark Chocolate. A jolt of energy suffuses your body. Your speed increases by 10 feet for 1 minute. |
5 | Mint Chocolate. Chilled by icy cool mint, you gain resistance to fire damage for 1 minute. |
6 | Truffle. Bolstered by the decadent texture of chocolate truffle, you gain 1d4 + 1 temporary hit points. |
7 | Whiskey. You become immune to the frightened condition for 1 minute as fiery liquor smolders within your belly. |
8 | White Chocolate. The extreme lack of chocolate flavor is jarring and leaves you with a prolonged feeling of disappointment. You have disadvantage on ability checks for 1 minute. |
Honestly, you're quibbling over aesthetics. You could place the items numerically from worst to best, alphabetically, reverse alphabetically, alphabetically by fifth letter in the word, or rank them subjectively based on which flavor you think would be best -- and none of that would change the function of the item, since it all depends on a random dice roll.
Yes but then their unbalanced d8's wouldn't be as reliable as they always seem to be.
Still not quite. Cleric's Divine Intervention, you want to roll as low as possible.
White chocolate makes me sick, unfortunately. I do like milk chocolate more though.
Agreed! White chocolate is great!
You can like white chocolate all you well... like... but that doesn't make it chocolate in anything but name. :)
Then copy the homebrew and rearrange it to your taste… no pun intended.
And you my friend have lost your ever loving mind! White chocolate was made by Orcus we all know this because it’s just a flavorless gob of sugar and cream 🤪.
Bwahaha someone doesn't like white chocolate!
It would be interesting if only non-fey creatures experienced the more negative results of each chocolate. And I'm glad I'm not the only person who's not fond of cherry cordials, coconut fillings, and white chocolate. Whoever wrote this has good taste! ;)
So chaotic, who would actually need this.
White chocolate is my personal favourite chocolate, this article insults me.
Mint chocolate should also give you resistance to cold damage.
This is a fun item to toss into a mysterious candy store or find tucked away in a BBEG's pantry. Coming up with new effects to either add to the list or swap out with one of the existing sweets should be fun for creative DMs, to make the chocolates more or less beneficial.
Might I recommend the 'Spring Surprise'? 😱
(Classic Monty Python reference, fyi)
Ditto, I equally feel quite attacked at this for liking White Chocolate.
Thats what I was thinking too. Same with the white chocolate too.
Y'all. Folks. People. Take this free homebrew item and copy it and make it your own. If you love Cherry Cordials, make that one provide the power to produce Cherry Cordials (one of which has the same power at some cost). If you like coconut, make it give you unarmed attacks as though your fists are coconuts. If you ADORE white chocolate, make it cause you to gain a temporary boost to your Charisma. I, for one, LOVE caramels and would make it cause the person holding the caramel in their mouth become irresistibly attractive for up to an hour... but they can't talk the entire time without ruining the affect for anyone seeing the chocolate and gooey caramel all over their teeth and mouth.
cherry cordial, coconut, and white chocolate slander, I SHALL HAVE NONE OF IT!!!
Why are you hating on white chocolate it won the splatfest 57 to null geez
