This wooden broom, which weighs 3 pounds, functions like a mundane broom until you stand astride it and speak its command word. It then hovers beneath you and can be ridden in the air. It has a flying speed of 50 feet. It can carry up to 400 pounds, but its flying speed becomes 30 feet while carrying over 200 pounds. The broom stops hovering when you land.
You can send the broom to travel alone to a destination within 1 mile of you if you speak the command word, name the location, and are familiar with that place. The broom comes back to you when you speak another command word, provided that the broom is still within 1 mile of you.
Notes: Set: Speed (Flying), Movement, Utility, Exploration
Am I the only one who imagines that this must be uncomfortable as hell to ride? Is there any reason you couldn't attach a saddle and handlebars to the broom? And maybe saddlebags and a cupholder? Not to mention a safety harness? Seriously, the thought of all of my weight resting on a wooden handle under my crotch is making me cringe!
If you are riding the broom and you become grappled. Then your speed becomes 0, but can you still speak the word and use the broom's speed to move your body forcibly, and automatically break the grapple?
I was literally about to sit down and do that math one of my characters just got this item thanks friend
Shopkeep: Broom of flying? That'll cost you 500gold.
Player: Wow, that sounds like a great deal! I'll take it.
Shopkeep: You may want to buy the cushion of crotch protection... that's 1000gp.
Can you fly the broom vertically? Example attach the broom to your character with rope, say the command word and then fly like having a jetpack?
That is messed up. If a character was riding a horse and the horse has used its full movement the character would have to get off and walk if they want to move further. So just like the horse the broom (because of the factthat it has a set movement) is not a part of the character it is simply being use by them meaning they can't dash on it.
A horse can dash …
50’ is great combat speed (and the slower 30’ flight speed ain’t bad for heavy armor chonker, either). No attunement makes this super utilitarian. For travel it flies 5 miles per hour at normal pace according to travel rules, which is comparable to jogging or traveling via horse. Great resource!
How could an intelligent monster break it?
I am curious.... I see people posting about how DMs would make people make DC checks for adverse weather, etc. What if the broom was equipped with an exotic saddle? I can just picture a broom with a bicycle seat, a steering strap, and 2 stirrups.
Uncommon magic items are balanced for low level players, they said.
Uncommon magic items won't break your campaign, they said.
Now I have a flying wizard always flying and casting spells. They didn't even have to use an attunement slot.
The DM is letting us get 2 uncommon items for a oneshot set on a train (+ Minecraft inventory with no potions or magic items), and I'm really tempted to see if folks would like to each get a broom for shenanigans.
It makes no sense. Every other levitate or item that grants flying requires attunement and has some limitations (per day, charges, concentration, etc). This is better than all of them, requires nothing and is UNCOMMON??
2. Your character needs to study with the broom for 6 months to gain the Quiddich feat.
Or go one step further and see if your dm will let you make an arrow of total destruction and attach that to the front, dnd cruise missile
This isn’t a mount. It literally drops to the ground when you land. It doesn’t say “drops to the ground” but it says “stops hovering” and I can’t imagine any different result than it dropping to the ground.
Also all the people complaining about this items lack of attunement vs other flying items are also forgetting about Quaal’s Feather Token (bird), which IS a mount that would require dismounting (and preferable to dismissal using an entire action).
you also get the Rare (not Uncommon) item almost immediately in Dragonlance in a very common scenario
Blew my mind
I never would have put the effort into calculating that. Thanks!
For your convenience, here is a link to the updated 2024 Broom of Flying, which requires attunement! ...but is otherwise identical.
