Posted Apr 20, 2026It's really not. 4d + 4 is 14 hitpoints on average. The first CR 5 monster I have is an adult Oblex. It gets 2 attacks and does 18 damage on hit. If you assume 70% hit rate, that's 25 damage per turn. It also can force a saving throw for another 18 points of damage. You're still on the losing side if you're taking these every turn instead of doing something to fight.
New rules about using a bonus action to take these help, but healing potions are underwhelming items in general. Especially of theyre going for 300 gold per as someone here said they use.
For a comparison, level 1 cure wounds does an average of 13 hitpoints if you have a +4 modifier for spell casting. So this overpowered, expensive healing potion is a level 1 spell. Scribing a scroll of which costs 25 gold.
