Potion, very rare
One vial of this oil can coat one Melee weapon or twenty pieces of ammunition, but only ammunition and Melee weapons that are nonmagical and deal Slashing or Piercing damage are affected. Applying the oil takes 1 minute, after which the oil magically seeps into whatever it coats, turning the coated weapon into a +3 Weapon or the coated ammunition into +3 Ammunition.
This clear, gelatinous oil sparkles with tiny, ultrathin silver shards.
wait.... this doesn't have any sort of duration on it? So this creates a permanent +3 weapon
Is this intended to be permanent and always +3? That seems like a huge oversight.
It really should be varying qualities and durations. I could see varying grades of weapon enhancement oils that are +1, +2, or +3 and have durations ranging from a few hours to permanent, but not just limited to slashing and piercing and always +3 and permanent.
Why was this changed to a permanent effect? This is ridiculously overpowered now.
Does this mean my Aaracokra could coat her talons and be permanently +3?
Can she mass produce this potion? Can dragons do this?
And is there Oil of Impact to do the same for bludgeoning? My monk could make good use of that.
Most of the species that have natural attacks have been updated so that their attacks are “unarmed strikes that do {insert size of die and damage}”. Which means they no longer count as “weapons” and can’t be coated by the oil rules as written. As a DM in a homegame tho I might allow it, the potion is the same rarity as equivalent handwraps
The change to make it permanent does make this item much more useful.
This just means this item is a pick-your-favorite-+3-weapon, and should be considered as such.
Both this item and +3 weapons are 'very rare'.
It's just weird because usually consumable magic items are supposed to be cheaper than other items of the same rarity. But this definitely should not apply here.
Yes, the carelessness of forgetting the duration is a big oversight.
FYI: The 2014 version clearly states that it lasts for 1 hour and the damage is magical. Hope this is helpful!
nope per the DMG this would cost 20,000 GP and a +3weapon would cost 40,000 GP
I would argue that the duration change is a good thing. Nobody would ever want to use a consumable to turn a weapon into a +3 for just one or two encounters. Now it's more like a choose your own weapon thing. I'm almost certain the change no longer have a limited duration was intentional, it just shouldn't be counted as a consumable for the purposes of crafting and magic item purchases.
