Homebrew Shadow Elf Species Details
Native to the distant world of Ashan, these elves came to Altharion through the myriad of portals that connect to it, bringing with them their devotion to the darkness, their aptitude for secrets and stealth, and their willingness to self-sacrifice to achieve their goals. And among them, came their god, and she lurks in every darkened street and every shadowy corner.
Shadow Elf Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Living Darkness
Once per day, whenever you start or end your turn in complete darkness, you can regain hit points equal to your level.
Shadow Spells
Your connection to your shadow god bestows upon you the ability to cast the Vengeful Blade cantrip using this feature using Wisdom, Intelligence or Charisma as your spellcasting modifier(you choice when you pick this race).
When you reach character levels 3 and 5, you learn a higher-level spell, and can cast it using the same spellcasting modifier as the one you chose when you picked this race. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. The spell you learn at character level 3 is Hungering Blade, and at character level 5 is Darkness.
Trance
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.
Whenever you finish this trance, you can change your season, and you can gain two proficiencies that you don’t have, each one with a weapon or a tool of your choice selected from the Player’s Handbook. You mystically acquire these proficiencies by drawing them from shared elven memory, and you retain them until you finish your next long rest.
Umbral Senses
You gain proficiency in the Perception or Stealth skill.
Shadowstep
As a bonus action, you can magically teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
When you reach 3rd level, your Shadowstep gains an additional effect: Whenever you are about to use Shadowstep, you can infuse it with your own life, taking force damage equal to your level. This damage cannot be reduced in any way. If you do so, you can use Shadowstep as a free action, instead of a bonus action, and you lose the ability to cast Shadowstep until the end of your next turn.
