Homebrew Yup Bari Species Details

Hailing from the desert coasts of the equatorial continent of Camurot, the Yup Bari have proven to be a resilient, loyal, and proud people since they first rose to prominence on the world stage. Resembling large humanoid canines, the Yup Bari stand shoulder to shoulder with Duralian orcs and can overpower even the mightiest of their kind in open combat. Their ingenuity and cultural strength have allowed the Yup Bari to carve out a position of dominance in the cutthroat landscape of Camurot's highly contested shores and it's precious oases. Recent years have seen the Yup Bari subjected to mass enslavement by the northern empires of Bondural, leading to countless Yup Bari being scattered across Taeboral, spreading their people far and wide for the first time since the dawn of the new epoch.

Yup Bari Traits

Your yup bari character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Yup Bari reach adulthood around the ages of 8 or 9 years, become elderly in their late 40's, and can live up to a maximum of 60 years of age.

Alignment

Yup Bari are proud folk and put immense cultural focus on loyalty and honour, as such they often lean more towards Lawful or Neutral alignments, regardless of moral standing. Some yup bari may become loners if cut off from a pack for some reason and may lean more towards chaos.

Size

Yup Bari stand taller than most races, ranging on average between 6 and a half and 7 and a half feet tall and weighing 200-300 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Darkvision

Your canine eyes can see in low light conditions, but have difficulty discerning certain colours. Your vision is largely marked by shades of blues, yellows, and greys. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Lupine Athleticism

You have proficiency in the Athletics skill. You can add twice your strength modifier to the distance of your running long jump if you make the run up on all fours. Additionally, you can burrow 5 feet per round through loose soil, or 5 feet every two rounds through hard soil, creating a tunnel wide enough for a medium or smaller creature to crawl through while prone. Wet soil or loose material like sand may create structurally unsound tunnels.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Natural Weapons

Your powerful toothed maw has immense crushing power, allowing you to make a bite as a part of your attack action. This attack, if it hits, does piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier. In addition, your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Heightened Senses

You have proficiency in the Survival skill. You can apply double your proficiency bonus to Survival and Perception skill checks made to track or perceive something using your sense of smell or hearing as long as you are aware of its presence. Additionally, your passive perception is counted as having a +3 bonus to detecting stealthed creatures you can hear or smell but are have not seen.

Desert Dweller

You’re acclimated to the dry, arid desert of Camurot. You’re naturally adapted to hot climates, as described in chapter 5 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Yup Bari, and one other language of your choice. You can roughly speak to canine and lupine creatures using rudimentary sounds like barks, growls, and yaps to convey basic emotions or commands.
