Homebrew Woodler Species Details

From the the highest mountain peaks where storms reign almighty throwing anyone too weak to handle it to the deepest caves where roots barely reach, the Woodler crawls their way through the extreme climates they reign supreme in. They live in conditions no human could ever imagine living in from the cold for which you barely find white and silver dragons tens of thousands of feet above sea level where the air is too thin to support life and the temperatures reach as low as -70c to the deep caves thousands of feet below ground where no light can reach, and the food supply is limited to things of which make humans puke and cripple in fear from the creatures down there, very few humans have ever glimpsed a Woodler much less met one and made friends with it.

Driven Competitors

Every day brings a new challenge to a Woodler. Food, water, and shelter are rare in the uppermost mountain reaches and the lowest caves in the forests. A single mistake can bring doom your survival.

Woodlers thus place a premium on survival. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others. Woodlers love to win, and shall they ever lose, they seek to outdo their opponent for the rest of their lives.

This dedication to competition has a dark side. Woodlers are ferocious competitors, but above all else they are driven to outdo their past efforts. If a Woodler slays a dragon, he or she might seek out a larger, more powerful wyrm to battle. Few Woodler adventurers reach old age, as most die attempting to surpass their past accomplishments.

Fair Play

Woodlers are competitive to the bone and will therefore never accept any sort of unfair playing field, if a Woodler is caught fighting another with an unfair playing field, they will have their hands cut off and be left in the woods to die in their own tiers and blood.

Lone survivors

Woodlers tend not to be in any sort of tribe or group, though it's not unrealistic to find some here and there. Woodlers live in conditions where the food supply is next to none compared to a group's demand though Woodlers living in the woods rather than a cave or on a mountain top are more commonly shown to live in groups.

Woodler Names

Every Woodler has two names: a birth name assigned by the newborn’s mother and father and a name assigned from their feats and accomplishments. A birth name is usually slightly shorter than an average human name. Feat names are usually two words put together.

Birth names are always linked to gender. Woodlers see males as the strongest and the females as the weaker but faster counterpart. A male Woodler's name never ends with an "a" like a female name. To a Woodler, the person who is best at a job should be the one tasked with doing it.

A Woodler’s nickname is a description that can change on the whim of a chieftain or tribal elder. It refers to a notable deed, either a success or failure, committed by the Woodler. Woodlers assign and use nicknames with their friends of other races, and change them to refer to an individual’s notable deeds.

Woodlers present all three names when identifying themselves, in the order of birth name, nickname, and clan name. In casual conversation, they use their nickname.
