You point a finger at/designate a target in range and then place a hand upon/designate yourself or an ally. (You must be able to see the target and be in 5ft melee range of the ally you intend to use it on, but you don't need to be near one when you use it on yourself, and it is up to your GM if the spell works if you still know where the target is without sight via sound or divine intervention or etc.) Your magic grants you/your ally a brief insight into the target's defenses and overwhelms your target with the smell of the Camphor paste making them lose focus on the battle. Because of the smell and subsequent disorientation your enemy/enemies will know that something is amiss. That (along with the short range of the spell) makes it so, while not impossible to get the drop on your enemies with it, it is highly discouraged from being used for that purpose. The spell still works on enemies with no sense of smell and doesn't work extra against enemies whose sense of smell is heightened or greater than a humanoids. Until the end of your next turn, your enemy gains disadvantage on their first and second attack rolls against You/Your Ally and You/Your Ally gains advantage on your attack rolls against the target till you hit them for the first time after the spell was cast but before the end of the spell, provided that the spell caster hasn't lost concentration before then. (You/Your Ally keep advantage against that target until you hit them for first time after the casting, or until the spell ends, and All mentions of affected Attack rolls via this spell, Advantage or Disadvantage, encompass all Attack types. Weapons & Magic, Ranged & Melee.)
At higher levels this spell grants the Caster the ability to Select additional Enemies/Allies to receive the initial effects. You get +2 targets to select per additional spell level. (Ex: You cast this at 6th level you then get +12 additional targets alongside the initial choice of Ally and Enemy with a grand total of 14 choices with 1 guaranteed ally and 1 guaranteed enemy.) All Additional targets must be able to be seen and within a specific distance of others of the same type. For enemies they must be within 20ft of the caster or within 10ft of an already selected enemy, and allies must be within 10ft of the caster or within 5 feet of an already selected ally.
