You touch a willing creature and a ribbon of angry red light connects the two of you, forming a sustained beam of energy between you and your target. Creatures in the 5-foot wide line between you and your target, and creatures that start their turn in or enter this line must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure a creature takes 1d6+1 fire damage. On a successful save, they take no damage.

Hop, Skip, And A Jump. On either you or your target's movement, the  line moves about accordingly. Creatures that the line between you passes through during this movement must make the saving throw each time the line enters their space. Creatures smaller in size than the smaller of both you or your target have advantage on the saving throw. For example, your target is a halfling and you are a human. Creatures of smaller size than the halfling target have advantage.

Ties That Bind. You must spend your action to maintain the spell. If you do anything else on your action the spell ends. The spell also ends if either of you are more than 30-feet apart, or are separated by at least three quarters cover worth of any solid, non-flammable material such as stone or metal.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage is increased by 1d6+1 for each spell slot level above 3rd that you use.
