You hurl an orb of energy at a target within range. Choose Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, or Thunder for the type of orb you create, and then make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 3d8 damage of the chosen type.
If you roll the same number on two or more of the d8s, the orb leaps to a different target of your choice within 30 feet of the target. Make an attack roll against the new target, and make a new damage roll. The orb can’t leap again unless you cast the spell with a level 2+ spell slot.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d8 for each spell slot level above 1. The orb can leap a maximum number of times equal to the level of the slot expended, and a creature can be targeted only once by each casting of this spell.

Posted Sep 30, 2025One might argue the wording specifically says "...a creature can be targeted only once by each casting of this spell." and interpret that to mean the initially targeted mob upon casting. I'd rule the bounces, if any, can pinball, as long as there's at least two mobs within range to target. Subsequent castings cannot target the same initial mob as a previous casting... Not game-breaking, and keeps the pinball flavor. YMMV

Posted Oct 28, 2025A level 14 Evocation Mage with the Overchannel ability can cast this spell at level 5 and have it bounce 5 times, dealing maximum damage to each enemy if the attacks land? Or since they don't roll damage dice, but just deal maximum damage, wouldn't it bounce?

Posted Nov 3, 2025A strict reading of the rules might say no, since the bouncing effect is triggered "if you roll the same number". Overchannel says you deal maximum damage, and although it doesn't explicitly say that you don't roll the dice, that's how it's commonly understood. If you're not rolling dice, you can't roll the same number on two dice.
That said, a lot of DMs would probably allow it because it sounds awesome.

Posted Nov 3, 2025"Of your choice" if you do not choose a target, the spell runs out of vald targets and the bounce fizzles.

Posted Mar 11, 2026I pictured it as softball-sized as well. But the more doubles you roll, the larger it is and it gets smaller each time it hits a target.

Posted Apr 6, 2026Is this a new version of the spell from the 2024 Book?
Because I can't remember the part where it bounces to other targets.
That cool gimmick was reserved for the chaos bolt in the 2014 version.

Posted Apr 13, 2026This spell is from the 5.5e Player's Handbook. It does indeed incorporate the bouncing mechanic from Chaos Bolt, which the 5e version of this spell did not.

Posted Apr 16, 2026Remember, CME only affects creatures in the emanation, the emanation is only a 15' radius around you, you have to maintain concentration on CME for the entire round before you can do this the next round, and if there are sufficient targets in the emanation to make the combo worthwhile (ie. 7+ so you assure a bounce on every hit), you are likely downed or lost concentration from all 7 engaging you and hitting you during the round before you get to cast this...
Conjure Minor Elementals was wrongfully nerfed because people didn't understand how limited it is and how big a target it makes you.
