Three illusory duplicates of yourself appear in your space. Until the spell ends, the duplicates move with you and mimic your actions, shifting position so it’s impossible to track which image is real.
Each time a creature hits you with an attack roll during the spell’s duration, roll a d6 for each of your remaining duplicates. If any of the d6s rolls a 3 or higher, one of the duplicates is hit instead of you, and the duplicate is destroyed. The duplicates otherwise ignore all other damage and effects. The spell ends when all three duplicates are destroyed.
A creature is unaffected by this spell if it has the Blinded condition, Blindsight, or Truesight.

Posted Apr 19, 2025What happens if you cast it multiple times? If you cast it 2 times would it effectively be roll 6d6 on any 3+ you lose one? Then still have 5 hit buffer?

Posted Apr 23, 2025Unfortunately, it does not work that way. Per the general rules on spellcasting, the same spell cast multiple times on the same target doesn't stack.
Casting it again before the first one ends will effectively extend the duration and "refresh" the number of duplicates you have back to 3 if some were lost, but it doesn't add to the effect of the previous casting.

Posted Jun 26, 2025I think creatures with TremorSense are affected as normal when they attack someone using Mirror Image. (otherwise the designers should've included this in the Unaffected list). The Dungeon Master could rule this as the duplicates have weight/mass...

Posted Jun 26, 2025I think Magic Missile would bypass Mirror Image/strike only the caster & not the duplicates, as Magic Missile does not use an attack roll.

Posted Apr 26, 2026Because attacking while not seeing the target, like say with your eyes closed, you *also* have to guess which square the target is in. If you guess wrong, you miss no matter what you roll. *Then* you roll with disadvantage. Technically, you aren't even supposed to know if you guessed wrong. You make your attack rolls and all you know is it missed, not even if there was something there to hit.
The most generous I could see this being is going, 'you know the target is next to you and on that side" (meaning those 3 squares - which is more information than you should get). In that case, you'd have a 1 in 3 chance of guessing right. Then you have to hit with disadvantage. Let's say a caster with mage armor and +2 dex for a total of 15, with disadvantage. We'll say you have a plus 9 to hit. Which with disadvantage comes to 56% chance of hitting. .56 x 1/3 is 19% chance of hitting.
So in this (incredibly generous) scenario, you do have a better chance than attacking with 3 images, but only at first. I had chatgpt calculate how many attacks it takes for just attacking normally to be better than blindfolding yourself or something, with the assumption of a 1 in 3 chance of guessing the location correctly, and by the 4th *attack* you have a higher expected damage than attacking blinded. So if you make 2 attacks per turn, by your last attack of turn 2, you are better off than if you closed your eyes.
The math drops pretty sharply if you have to guess at more than 3 squares. i.e. you're better off attacking normally.

Posted Apr 27, 2026I think it's pretty clear that what they meant was closing their eyes after they knew where the target was. In general, the hypothetical wizard is not going to be able to move to a different place on the attacker's turn between when they close their eyes and when they make the attack.

Posted Apr 28, 2026I would argue if you do that, you would be too influenced by how recently you saw the mirrors to know which one you are attacking, and have to take the effect of the spell. Kind of the same argument for someone saying, 'I just close my eyes when someone casts hypnotic pattern so I cant see and am not affected'.
Additionally, the we do turns because we have to. In 'reality' everyone is taking their movement and actions simultaneously, so yes, the wizard could be in the middle of moving when you close your eyes, hence, you know the wizard is somewhere in that direction.
