Base Class: Monk
Loss. It leaves holes in a heart that one must fill. Some try meditation, others try to ignore it. Some, still, try to rip a chunk out of another to mend the cavity; they call it retribution.
Such was the Way of the Broken Skull crafted. It was born from a torn heart, an angered soul, the failings of the traditions from before. A new monastic art, molded from the bleeding waste of the old ways and cultivated during a brutal, visceral execution that followed its birth. An attack in Paucastärke long ago left the bones of limbs shattered, a ribcage obliterated into a fractured shell, and the carcass that was once a Goblin a limp ragdoll in an expanding red pool.
The style was a corruption, a bastardization of a tradition which was once taught as method of self defense and meditation; a holistic art now twisted and sharpened into a tool of violence.
This way of violence spread like a building tsunami. It crashed into those who stood against it in a bloody, calculated monsoon, drowning those who were caught under and breaking their skulls against the tide.
And yet for all the bodies left in its wake, the tradition, born in blood, has instated itself as a cold private practice, a manipulation of life’s energy unto death.
Brutal Dissection
They say practice makes perfect, and if there’s anything you’ve practiced it’s a myriad of methods which provoke pain.
You gain proficiency in Medicine if you don’t already have it as you fully grasp the ways in which your enemies react to your impacts.
Once per turn, when you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you manage to impact your target with surgical precision, causing one of the following effects:
- The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw, or have its speed halved until the end of your next turn.
- The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw, or have disadvantage on all attack rolls against targets other than you until the end of your next turn.
- The target takes additional damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die
You can cause this effect for free as part of your Flurry of Blows, or by paying 1 ki point as part of your attack action.
Corpse Stride
Once per turn after killing a creature with an unarmed strike, you can spend 1 ki point to pick up its body (or rip off a part of it, if it’s too large to carry) and immediately move up to half of your movement speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
If you end this movement within melee range of another creature, you can make one attack with the body or body part, treating it as a monk weapon that deals bludgeoning damage. If this attack hits, it deals an extra martial arts die of damage. Whether the attack hits or misses, the weapon is then destroyed.
This feature interacts with Ki-Empowered Strikes.
Battle Trance
Violence generates more violence, and it’s all about being the one who employs it the best. During combat, you enter a trance like state, allowing for your body to run through the necessary motions to preserve yourself.
When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike as part of the attack action, you gain a +2 bonus to AC until the start of your next turn. This benefit ends early if you are incapacitated.
Body Like a Temple
A deep understanding of the intricacies of your body has led you to several breakthroughs. You can alter the flow of ki through your body to your advantage, forcing it to work at it’s maximum capacity.
You can spend 1 ki point as a bonus action, gaining this benefits for the following 10 minutes:
- You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength modifier when making Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
- When you start a turn grappled by a creature, you can make an attempt to escape.
Surgical Precision
You’ve learned how to wield your body to its utmost potential, turning it into a weapon of unerring accuaracy while supporting yourself on momentum and impulse.
You gain expertise in Medicine, if you don’t already have it.
Your unarmed strikes score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 and gain the siege property (your attacks deal double damage to objects and structures).
Relentless Hunter
As you learn how to push past even the most complex of obstacles, your stride can’t be broken.
You can spend 1 ki point at the beginning of your turn, gaining the following benefits
- Difficult terrain doesn’t cost you extra movement
- Your speed can’t be reduced by any means.
These benefits last until the start of your next turn.
Opportunistic Master
You pride yourself in your ability to find openings where there are none. Once per turn when you use the attack action or the Flurry of Blows feature and hit both of your attacks with unarmed strikes, you can make an additional attack.
