Base Class: Artificer
Dragon Smiths are artificers who have discovered the secrets of ancient forges, where steel and fire were one with the power of dragons. They do not create ordinary weapons or armor their creations are alive, growing with their owners and slowly transforming them into something more than mortals.
Some say that the power of the forge comes from the dwarven god Moradin, others that it is the legacy of the red dragons, who learned to fuse their blood with fire and metal. Once a blacksmith chooses this path, he becomes not only a craftsman, but also a living vessel of the forge - his body and soul are tempered in flames just like the blades he creates.
For many, it is a path to power. For others, it is a curse that gradually eats away at their humanity.
Tools of the Trade
When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with heavy armor and smith’s tools. In addition, you are proficient with warhammers, mauls, and light hammers.
Master of your Make
Your bond with the forge allows you to wield with mastery any weapon you create with your own hands. You are proficient with any weapon you personally craft using smith’s tools (DM’s discretion for time/materials). This proficiency lasts as long as you remain attuned to.
Dragon Smith Spells
Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Dragon Smith Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.
| Artificer Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3 | Absorb Elements, Identify |
| 5 | Heat Metal, Enlarge/Reduce |
| 9 | Elemental Weapon, Tiny Servant |
| 13 | Fabricate, Fire Shield |
| 17 | Steel Wind Strike, Wall of Force |
Dragonforge Armor
Beginning at 3rd level, your metallurgical pursuits have led to you making armor a conduit for your magic. As an action, you can turn a suit of armor you are wearing into Dragonforge Armor, provided you have smith's tools in hand. You gain the following benefits while wearing this armor:
- If the armor normally has a Strength requirement, the arcane armor lacks this requirement for you.
- You can use the Dragonforge armor as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells.
The armor continues to be Dragonforge Armor until you don another suit of armor or you die.
Draconic Legacy
At 3rd level, the spirit of an ancient dragon influences you. Your body and soul become a vessel for its power.
- You learn draconic language.
- You gain resistance to fire damage.
Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Dragon Secrets
Beginning at 5th level, your journey may lead you to discover further secrets of dragons. Dragons and Dragonborns can teach you ancient techniques that develop your Legacy. Each of them requires a story encounter and training (and therefore cooperation with the Game Master).
- Dragon Breath. After training with a dragon or Dragonborn of a given bloodline, you learn to mimic their breath.
Once per long rest, you can use Dragon's Breath as an action. It deals 2d6 damage of the learned type (fire, acid, lightning, cold, or poison) in a 15-foot cone or a 30-foot x 5-foot line (depending on the type of dragon). Each creature in that area must make a DC (DC = 8 + your Intelligence modifier + proficiency bonus) Dexterity saving throw. Damage increases to 3d6 at 9th level, 4d6 at 11th level and 5d6 at 15th level. - Dragon Presence. After encountering a great dragon (adult or older), you can forge a fragment of its majesty in your heart.
Once per long rest, you can use an action to spread an aura of terror around you. All creatures of your choice within 10 feet must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Intelligence modifier + your proficiency bonus), or they are frightened for 1 turn. At level 15, the range increases to 30 feet and the duration to 1 minute.
Dragon Heart
When you reach level 9th, dragon power fills your mind and armor. You are immune to the frightened condition. While wearing your Dragonforge Armor, you have resistance to fire damage. At 15th level, this resistance becomes immunity while wearing the armor (you still have resistance when not wearing it).
Master of Forge
At 15th level, your mastery of the forge allows you to bind your artificer infusions into existing magic items. You can now infuse magic items of common and uncommon rarity.
- You must spend 1 hour of focused work with smith’s tools to apply or replace an infusion on a magic item.
- Infusing magic item costs 2 infusion slots.
- A magic item can only hold one infusion at a time.
If the infused item is destroyed or replaced with a higher-rarity version, the infusion immediately end.
