Monk
Base Class: Monk

You follow an unorthodox tradition, held separate from other monistic teachings. Cultivators of the sword see the blade as more than just an object but as a concept! It represents precise, lethal blows, achieved through finesse and skill. They focus on becoming one with the sword itself, and through it materialize their will to fight.

Sword Saints usually dress in clothes of vivid or neutral colors, most use themes of black and white to represent the Taiji, that which breaks apart and brings all things together. Others though may choose themes such as red or golden robes to showcase their own affinities and qualities.

Dao of the Sword

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Longswords and Scimitars. Your training and cultivation has turned your ki into sharp and sword-like vital energy, and due to the new nature of your ki and your training you gain the following benefits:

Sword Cultivator

When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you learn sharp techniques that showcase the power of the sword. Many techniques require you to spend ki points each time you use them.

You know the Sword Control technique and two other sword techniques of your choice. You learn two additional sword techniques of your choice at 6th, 11th, and 17th level.

Whenever you learn a new sword technique, you can also replace one sword technique that you already know with a different technique.

Performing Sword Techniques. Some sword techniques allow you to cast spells. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting. To cast one of these spells, you use its casting time and other rules, but you don't need to provide material components for it.

Once you reach 5th level in this class, you can spend additional ki points to increase the level of a sword techniques spell that you cast, provided that the spell has an enhanced effect at a higher level, as Shadow Blade does. The spell's level increases by 1 for each additional ki point you spend.

The maximum number of ki points you can spend to cast a spell in this way (including its base ki point cost and any additional ki points you spend to increase its level) is determined by your monk level, as shown in the Spells and Ki Points table.

Terrestrial Sword Techniques

Crying Tiger: You can spend 2 Ki Points to cast Shatter.

Lonely Sword: You can spend 1 ki points to cast Shadow Blade.

Shedding: When a creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage taken by 1d10 + your monk level. If the damage is reduced to 0, you can spend 1 ki point to make a melee weapon attack with the weapon you just deflected as part of the same reaction.

Sword Control: You can control your weapons as an extension of your own body. After the end of a short or long rest, you can bond to and control up to a number of melee monk weapons equal to your proficiency bonus. These weapons will hover around you, and you can control them mentally. You can't take control of weapons that are being held by other creatures, or weapons that you haven't touched before. Once you bond with a weapon, the bond lasts until you decide to end it. You also gain the following benefits.

  • You can switch what weapon you are controlling as a free action.
  • Whenever you would take the attack action in your turn, you can make the attack using a weapon under your control as if you were holding them and gain an additional 5-feet range to your attack.
  • Whenever you would perform an unarmed strike as a bonus action due to one of your other monk features, you can spend 1 ki point and attack with one of the weapons under your control instead. This applies to Flurry of Blows as well.

Sword Curtain: You can spend 1 ki point to cast Shield.

Sword Prison: You can spend 1 ki points to cast Earthbind.

Earthly Sword Techniques

Blade of Formless Will (Requires 6th level): You can expend 2 ki points to create a blade of pure willpower, which slices out in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose, it stops early if it impacts against a solid surface. If the blade strikes a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 4d8 magical slashing damage.

Blade Storm (Requires 6th level): You can spend 2 ki points to cast Wind Wall. When you cast the spell in this way it does slashing damage.

Eagle’s Descent (Requires 6th level): You can expend 2 ki points to sweep out your blade to release a tremor on the ground within 15 feet of you. Each creature other than you in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d10 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. If the ground in that area is loose earth or stone, it becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute.

If you take damage from multiple sources, such as an arrow and a dragon’s breath, you make a separate saving throw for each source of damage.

Heavenly Sword Techniques

The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target becomes frightened for the duration. At the end of each of the creature’s turns, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 4d10 psychic damage. On a successful save, the effect ends.
