Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

Though most artificers prefer tinkering with machines and weaponry, or creating alchemical concoctions by following complex formulae, such dangerous and complex work is not for those who specialize in the art of writing. Known as Scriveners, these artificers are masterful calligraphers and writers who combine their passion for the written word with the arcane. Both in and out of battle, these artificers wield magical ink pens that allow them to imbue the very words they write with magic.

Tool Proficiency

Beginning when you choose this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with calligrapher's supplies.

Scrivener Spells

At 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Scrivener Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Scrivener's Quill

Also at 3rd level, you’ve learnt how to create a unique magical writing tool. As part of a long rest, you can imbue a set of calligrapher's supplies with a measure of your arcane ability, transforming it into a Scrivener’s Quill. You can only have one Scrivener’s Quill at a time. The Scrivener’s Quill functions as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells, and while wielding it, you gain the following features:

Magic Ink. The quill doesn’t require ink to function, and when you write with it, it produces ink in a color of your choice on the writing surface. Additionally, you can magically erase anything you’ve written with the quill as a bonus action, provided that you can see the surface you’ve written on.

In addition, while using your Scrivener’s Quill as a spellcasting focus, you can cast the Illusory Script spell at will.

Scroll Scribe. At the end of a long rest, you can craft special spell scrolls that are easier to use using your Scrivener’s Quill, known as Runic Scrolls. When you create a Runic Scroll, you can create one with any spell of 1st-level or higher that you know and that is of a level that you can cast. You cannot craft multiple Runic Scrolls of the same spell.

You can create a number of Runic Scrolls equal to your Intelligence modifier. Any Runic Scroll you’ve created loses its magic once you’ve finished a long rest.

Any creature, even one that does not have a spellcasting ability, can use one of your Runic Scrolls. It takes an action to activate the scroll, and the creature who activated the scroll can choose to either count as the spell’s target or its caster. The scroll’s spell uses your spell save DC and spell attack modifier for saving throws and attack rolls.

In addition, the gold and time you need to spend to craft normal spell scrolls is halved.

Scribe's Revisions

At 5th level, you’ve learnt how to manipulate the arcane elements of spell scrolls you create to alter them in certain ways. When you craft a Runic Scroll using your Scrivener’s Quill, you can choose to modify the scroll’s spell in up to two of the following ways:

  • If the spell deals damage, you can change its damage type to another damage type of your choice.
  • You can double or halve the spell’s duration.
  • You can double or halve the spell’s range or area of effect.

In addition, whenever you or another creature uses a Runic Scroll or spell scroll that you made using your Scrivener’s Quill, they can add your Intelligence modifier to the spell’s damage roll.

Runic Savant

At 9th level, you can imbue the words you write with magical effects. You can cast the Glyph of Warding spell without requiring material components or expending a spell slot, provided you use your Scrivener's Quill as your spellcasting focus. In addition, the spell’s casting time becomes 1 minute, instead of 1 hour.

You can cast the spell in this way a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier per long rest.

Master Scrivener

At 15th level, you’ve mastered the crafting and usage of spell scrolls, and are an expert at channeling magic through written words. You gain the following features:

  • You can activate one of your Runic Scrolls as a bonus action, instead of as an action. Other creatures must still use their action to activate one.
  • You can cast the Symbol spell once per long rest without requiring material components or expending a spell slot, provided you use your Scrivener's Quill as your spellcasting focus.
