This update provides users the ability to create their own Homebrew Character Races:
The homebrew races will not only provide textual data in their own listing and details pages, but will also allow users to select races and have their effects applied in the character builder!
The main homebrew page has been updated with a slot for races:
And now there is a listing page for homebrew races:
Currently, you can filter by name, the size of the race/subrace, the type of ability score the race may increase, and the author. Additional filtering may be added in the future, based on feedback.
As with other homebrew-able data, you can either create a homebrew race/subrace from an existing, publicly available race/subrace to use as a guide, or create one from scratch. In fact, there are three options for races. Create an entirely new race, create a subrace for races that support them, or a variant of any race:
When creating a base race, you will have the options of flagging it to support subraces. When doing so, the base race will no longer be available in the character builder (similar to how Elf functions.) You will be able to create a variant of any race, even those that support subraces, as that precedence exists with Aasimar / Variant Aasimar. The main difference between subraces and variant races is that subraces will add to the race with their racial traits, a variant race will usually have some racial traits that replace existing racial traits on their base race.
Here, we've selected to start creating our own new base race - the Minotaur:
The form is fairly simple. Once the initial information is saved, you will then be able to add racial traits, and subraces and/or variants. If you plan on your race supporting subraces, please make sure to enable the "Will Support Subraces" toggle:
Now that we've saved the initial data for our new Minotaur, opting not to support subraces, we can add our racial traits, and any variant races:
We're going to add a racial trait for an Ability Score Increase for the Minotaur now by clicking the Add Racial Trait button:
Once the Racial trait is saved, you will then be able to add options, modifiers, spells, and limited use data to the racial trait:
Let's add the modifier for the strength increase, so that the character will actually have their strength score increased in the character builder:
Racial Trait Options are used for data where the character get's to choose from a list of options from the racial trait, like the breath weapon for Dragonborn.
Now, let's create a variant of our Minotaur race by clicking on the Add Variant button:
On the subrace/variant form, be sure to select the Is Variant toggle, if this is a Variant.
Once the variant is created you will be able to add racial traits to it, same as the base race:
Having decided that we now want our Minotaur race to have subraces, we've enabled the "Will Support Subrace" toggle on the main race form. In doing so, we now have a subraces section on the bottom of the form:
The is the same form as the variant form. When creating a subrace, just leave the Is Variant checkbox un-selected:
Your homebrew race uses the same details page as the official races. As such, a little data convention will give you access to some features. By using H2, H3, H4 tags in your descriptions, they will automatically generate the side nav bar on the details pages. Same for subrace / variant details pages.
If your homebrew base race is published, only published subraces / variants will display on its details page. Any subraces / variants that are still private will not show.
Go make some races / subraces / varaints. Experiment, play around, let us know what bugs you find :)
Up next:
Next up will be homebrew subclasses. During that iteration we will also turn on commenting and reporting for homebrew data!
Happy brewing!
This is awesome!! I can't wait to see what other people create!
I cannot create a race with optional language or skill selections from scratch as the Modifier Type: Language; Modifier Subtype: Choose a Language and Modifier Type: Proficiency; Modifier Subtype: Choose a Skill are not available for selection by users.
These options are also still not available for homebrew feats or magic items despite a number of posts being raised in the Bugs and Support forum in November.
These are now visible, thank you.
Thanks for the amazing work!
I had a couple of things stashed away to try this with. :)
Yeesssssssss! THIS is the homebrew option that I have been waiting for to handle our campaign. We have a number of homebrew races. Sort of had them hacked together with Variant Human + Homebrew Feat, but this is awesome!
I have a question about recreating the planeshift races (like the Kor from Planeshift: Zendikar). Is this allowed for personal/published homebrew?
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the size category of a subrace and if so, how (I've tried messing around in the modifiers within the traits, but no luck)? For instance if one wanted to make a race of Half-races (orc, minotaur, dwarf, etc.) and add various subraces that vary in size. Thanks in advance. :)
How do I add a language(s)?
Please help me... How do I make the following option for a new race?
You are proficient in your choice of two of the following skills: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, and Persuasion
I can get it to give me one of them as an option. How do I make it give me two as an option in the character creator?
to change the size of your homebrew character just go to the race.
BASIC INFORMATION -----------------------------------------> (click on the blue +)
the SIZE box has the options for you race size... choose the size you want.
you might have to just copy the race and make it the size you want
thanks
This seems like a bug. When I make a trait with options it says "1 Choice" on the character builder, implying that there should be a way to make it more than one choice.
Hi Im having trouble with the spell add on for racial features. can get the cantrip to work but it wont let me add on a higher level spell properly. quickly went and made a character with the homebrew race and the other spell just dosnt show up in the trait feature. Help?
Did you add a level requirement?
If so, did you check the character at that level to see if it showed up???
When I try and create a subraces for a homebrew race, they just appear on the character creation screen as separate options and not as an option from the parent race. For example, with elves you pick elves and then drops down a list you can choose from. My homebrew stuff doesn't do that and its becoming very confusing for my players. Help! please!
