The next phase of our mobile app beta - Compendium Listings - is now available!
This update adds the Spells, Magic Items, Equipment, Monsters, Races, Classes, Background and Feats sections that you know from the website to the mobile app with offline functionality. Bookmark any listing to access it quickly in the future and the Compendium content in the eReader section is now updated to include links to listings, similar to how the Compendium appears on the website.
To access, simply update your app through the Google Play Store or, on iOS, click the link to opt into the Listings Alpha (TestFlight App required), then update any/all sources within the app to obtain their listings data. You will find these new sections in the Navigation Menu (Android) or in the More Menu (iOS).
Be sure to post any feedback or bugs to our forums or contact us directly at support@dndbeyond.com if you need any assistance.
Hey gang - I love this, it'll definitely see some use at my table! One thing I'm finding confusing: how do the basic rules doc and the core rulebooks interact? I own all three core books in my account, so I thought I could just download those and leave out the basic rules (which also means I don't have to worry about the unnamed variants of spells appearing alongside the named ones, i.e. Tasha's Hideous Laughter vs Hideous Laughter etc.), but I've found that monsters included in the basic rules don't appear unless you have the basic rules content installed, even if you have installed the Monster Manual. (I'm running the test flight version on iOS 12.0.1 on an iPhone 6s, in case that info is helpful.)
I realise this may be intentional, to avoid doubling up of data, but it might need to be signposted better? On the web site it's not a problem because you always have access to the Basic Rules whether you've bought additional content or not, but if I need to have the basic rules installed on the app to use stuff I also own in the PHB, MM or DMG, it'd be good to flag that. (In my mind those books supersede and replace the basic rules, so needing them both is counter-intuitive unless its specifically called out it works that way for app purposes.)
Yes, this is intentional (at this point in time) to avoid duplication of data (and therefore larger install sizes) on a device. We are reviewing alternate means of handling that storage that will make all of this clearer before we leave beta.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi,
I love this! There's three things I'm a bit unsure about though:
1. What Guybrush42 mentioned about the basic data. I know it's to avoid duplication, but couldn't it be solved in a way that you only get items listed from the content you have downloaded? (Or via a specific "hide basic data" filter)
2. The filtet use is a bit unintuitive on Android - at least this might be the first app I see where you need to press the "back" button (which is more associated with undo/cancel) than an apply button. I keep looking for how to apply the filter.
3. I realise the lists feed from the Compendium content, but it was a bit unclear that I can only get things here if I buy that, even if I bought the individual options. This makes me a bit sad, cause there are books I didn't plan to fully buy, except bits and bobs, but that way I would not be able to see it (e.g. monsters from the adventures that I own as a hard copy and would never use in the app). On the other hand, I'd prefer not to see these items instead of being taken to the buy content page when I click on them. Maybe a "show downloaded content only" setting could help? (A setting, not a filter that needs to be set after each navigation).
Looking forward to the offline characters too! :)
Nice! I'll wait for the final release on iOS, though.
So, I HAVE to have the basic rules installed even though I have all the core books?
It kinda sounds contradictory to the goal - if I have the PHB compendium already installed, this way I have to install the core rules on top, actually increasing the size of it. It might be that the included items are smaller (not sure how it is stored), but it nevertheless installs the basic rules (which are now 357MB).
Oh, and this confusion is supported by the marketplace, where the description for the Compendium Content says:
So it sounds like that in order to have the content in the searchable listings in the app, I need to buy the component that does not grant access to the searchable listings.
Your favorite question... ETA?
This makes my lil DM heart so happy!
Your favorite answer... soon ™
Is there anyway that if you own the books physicaly that you could link this to your digital account instaed of having to buy the books twice?
As explained several times, in several threads, like here, no.
I like this better.
They've talked about it in the past and will be incorporating it down the line. I'm looking forward to it too, but it's incremental steps since we're still in beta.
Is it only em or is anything from xanathar not accessiblein listings.. only book I did not get an option to download an updated version.
Every source should have an update with listings content introduced. If no update is showing for any reason after a pull-to-refresh on the compendium list, you can go to My Content under My Account to delete the source and then just download it again manually.
Refresh updated a few more . Had to temivr en re add tomb of anhiliation all fine now
Bookmarking spells, items and monsters is great for DM game preparation, but any chance we can organize these bookmarks into folders eventually?
Loving the upgrades!
In Android, long press on a bookmark to edit or delete it. You can re-order the bookmarks by long pressing and dragging. (I'll admit this wasn't the most intuitive thing, and warrants some changes in the future to make it easier to find and perform.)
In iOS, press the EDIT button in the top right to re-order, delete or edit a bookmark.
Thanks for the response BadEye! It's otherwise all working pretty great, and will be super useful. I can spare the space to have the Basic Rules installed as well, so I'll just stick with that. Hope my comments were useful!
