I've had good things to say about D&D Beyond as a free user. Today I was gonna actually spend money and buy a campaign through this service, as it's a good way to get legal, digital versions of the books. However, when I went to purchase Hoard of the Dragon Queen, I was asked to provide 2 addresses: billing, and residential. Until the requirement for a residential address is removed, I will be buying physical books from a competitor. A billing address is a normal thing to require for digital purchases, but there is no justification for requiring to give my residential address.
Yes, I am aware that I can check off "use my residential address as my billing address" if they're the same, but that doesn't change the fact that at that point you would have my full name and residential address in your system, possibly saved to my account somewhere (as I saw nowhere I could select "do not memorize my payment information.")
Please implement a feature where I can clearly select that you do not save my info, and remove the requirement for a residential address. Until then, I will be buying my books from a competitor, be it physical or digital.
Billing addresses are often used to verify methods of payments, aka - credit cards are authenticated to billing addresses. Certain purchasers will not necessarily use a form of payment from someone who lives at their address. This can cause discrepancies.
Residential addresses are often used to associate applicable taxes. Most remote purchases will tax based off you home city/county/state/country.
As jexthomas noted, this is an incredibly common practice indeed. It's unfortunate you feel this way, but not a likely aspect which I'd expect legal teams to alter.

Isn't that an incredibly common practice?
DM: The Cult of the Crystal Spider (Currently playing Storm King's Thunder)
Player: The Knuckles of Arth - Lemire (Tiefling Rogue 5/Fighter 1)
If Steam doesn't need it I don't see why they do.
