I'm like Indiana Jones meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, only browner.
So far this seems awesome. I honestly can't wait for the character maker. For some reason those services always interest me, I think I enjoy being able to quickly alter things instead of having to worry about erasing on paper and making the paper less visually appealing.
Excited to be here! Can't wait for the Character Builder to go live, I love spending my free time rolling characters and writing backstories, as I'm sure many do! Thanks WotC!
So awesome to be a part of this! I can really feel the development team's love for D&D! So far so good! Hopefully non-SRD monsters will be included soon along with the Magical Item Pictures from the DMG! Keep up the Great Work!
Yeah, the Dungeons & Dragons love practically radiates in our office. DDB literally got its start from a game I started with several others at Curse last July. I knew that if I could get others to experience firsthand the world's greatest roleplaying game that we could make something special. We're very committed to that path now.
To further prove that love, we played out the Hoard of the Dragon Queen finale a couple of months ago on a to-scale Skyreach...complete with fog machine for clouds. :D
Just spent 2 hours creating my first cleric. Not even 5 min after I finish I get the Beta mail that gives me access to all of this. Beshaba is truly on my side!
I'm going to call myself excited, but in search of answers. It's the first day, ya'll are busy, but if we could get an update answering some the of FAQS here it would be MUCH appreciated. I think this is honestly a great move on WotC's part, players are using so many third party apps out there (I personally almost require my spellcasters to use apps to keep track of their slots and spell descriptions), and this gives both the players an official app with support and updates, but also gives WotC several opportunities, like charging for it's use.
I think the budding community would like to know the following:
-The biggest questions are about a mobile app and offline access, are/will they be available? If they will be will it be a part of the Beta or released with the full product?
-There's also a lot of people asking about timelines, I don't think we need a down to the minute answer, and the answer can certainly be flexible, but a general window of how long we have to use, peruse, and test things before a new batch would help.
-Will there be a subscription fee? A one-time purchase of the app/an account? What about those that have already purchased all the material already and feel this would be a great tool but can't justify more money?
-My big one personally: Is this all the info we're getting? Is there a free version and premium account to access the PHB, DMG, MM, EE and more? If not than you're really just giving us a character management tool, which is fine (don't get me wrong), but seems...underwhelming compared to the great things you COULD be doing.
Again, we appreciate the tool, really we do, but this info would go a long way with the community. And I think you may have to state it a few times, but most seem to know how Betas work, and know the answers can change. I'm personally stoked for this, I think it's going to make it so much easier to create new fans as nowadays an app is much more accessible and less complex than the pen and paper system (I have several young family members who spring to mind as interested, but hesitant about keeping up), but for a successful beta you gotta help us help you.
All in all, good move WotC, on behalf of the players, thanks for even taking this into consideration, a lot of companies wouldn't care about the community this much.
Thanks, it certainly has been a busy couple of days. Appreciate the patience, and I'll answer what I can.
- Mobile app is a definite, but I can't unveil a schedule for its release. The honest truth is we're working on it and we don't yet know how long it will take to get out. We've got a great mobile dev team that will deliver the goods though, and I'm excited to get to that point. And yes, the mobile app is central in our offline strategy - I don't think that's too big of a secret.
- As for timelines, the general window is we are launching this summer!
- We're very close to being able to reveal what's what with pricing. I could tell you parts that are confirmed, but I know the internet and know how partial information is absorbed and reacted to. I would rather wait (and I ask the community to wait) just a little longer to get the entire picture.
- And finally, this is such a small part of what we plan to deliver for DDB. For launch we'll have the compendium and listings, character management, homebrew, etc., but the future holds encounter and monster builders, combat/ initiative tracker, integrations with other licensed partners, all kinds of cool streaming stuff and the list goes on. I don't want to give the entire list here because the roadmap will be informed and prioritized based on what players want.
As I've said elsewhere, we're in this for the long run.
Without having used it in a real session, I already love the Compendium. Concise, well-sorted overview of rules. Perfect, if I forgot something.
The "Spells"-Section is also nice, but I already have two suggestions:
if possible for a spell, it'd be nice to see the actual damage in the concise overview (not only after expanding a certain spell). I know this may be difficult for most spells that do different damage in different situation, but it'd still be great for "simple" spells, cantrips etc.
it'd love to filter spells for a certain domain / specialization of a certain class (e.g. trickery domain of the cleric). At the moment, those spells are not included at all, which is sad but understandable. Still, the final version desperately needs this feature
The monsters section again is very nice. But i guess i found some kind of a bug: I cannot filter for a CR lower than 1. Am I too stupid or is there no way to filter stuff like "from 1/2 to 2"? I've tried the following ways to enter a correspondig CR: 1/2, 0.5, 0,5
For the items section, I am honest: I guess I won't use it that much. For the later phases ("Homebrew Integration"), I'd love some column for an items "value", because this'll be my main reference. My groups tend to loot the hell out of everything and then try to sell every piece of cr** to any willing merchant, so a "price reference", even a custom one, would be great :)
So far my feedback. This is a great project and I will certainly use it from GMing my rounds :)
We've got some other ways planned for you to see contextualized damage more easily, but we'll continue to explore options.
The "subclass" filter will be in a little further down the road that will include domains, circles, oaths, etc.
We're already working on a fix for the CR fractions, should be in soon!
Magic item costs are a little difficult since the costs are "guidelines" for a DM and not hard-and-fast values. We'll see if we can incorporate those somehow while making it absolutely clear that they are not objective truth. The last thing I would want to do is to confuse a new DM or player!
Thanks!

I'm so totally stoked!
Thanks for all the hard work! Just signed up for the beta and I'm so stoked to use this for my campaign!
You guys should make this an app.

Awesome! I have high expectations for how this will turn out!
