Pettilaen only remembered seeing the rock fly towards him before everything went black. Waking up, he heard Portia chanting a prayer for him, restoring him to consciousness. A wave of healing enveloped him. It was soooo soothing.... The rock. The giant. They're in battle.
Pettilaen lept up onto his little gnome legs, checking himself over. He could still feel the magical prowess of his Spazzledazzle active. Dashing off towards the giant, he shouted over his shoulder, "Thanks, Portia! I owe you again!" He cleared the ground with amazing speed, and leapt for cover behind a boulder before rolling and pulling out his hand crossbow in the same action. The roll made him wince in pain, as he realized he was still injured. We're gonna have to end this quick. A counter thought popped into his head. Can you even end a giant quickly?
OOC: Standing up, moving, dashing, pulling out his hand crossbow. Puts him 80 feet away from the giant.
Portia lept up after the gnome and dashing to get into the rocks putting her near him but behind another rock. She made sure to run with her shield up in defense. The next round she had a chance to irritate the giant. She started mentally running through her spells and noting where everyone was located. Running at a giant did not seem all that smart, but most of them were spell casters. The giant threw rocks and thankfully hadn't blown his horn....yet. Sometimes having annoying gnomes as friends was a very good thing. In a lot of ways she found them endearing even when infuriating her.
In gnomish, "Hey, Pettilaen. You owe me for sure." She laughed.

Zina ran forward, and finally found herself in range of the giant. She smiled triumphantly as she summoned a giant flaming sphere and slammed it into their adversary.
(OOC: Ran forward 25 feet, cast Flaming Sphere 60 feet ahead, and then moved said Sphere as a bonus action 30 feet.)
The giant levels his eyes at the fighter in heavy armor getting nearer and nearer. He takes aim and hurls a rock directly at Mara's chest, which impacts with a crunch and sends her spinning into the dirt, where she lies motionless.
"You going to lose!" He shouts in rough common, then laughs. "Little man was right. No need for horn to warn masters."
(META: 23 composite to hit, 28 damage, Mara's exact Hit Point total...)
At the sight of Mara being barreled over by a boulder, Kanon steps out from the cover and begins approaching the giant. Sweat is pouring from his forehead from the run and the anticipation of failure as he takes the components he pulled from his pouch, palms sweaty, and combines them while chanting a rhyme he had learned earlier. At the peak of the rhyme, he calls out to the giant.
"GIANT!" His voice is amplified, as if his years of vocal training had tuned an instrument for battle rather than entertainment. "You will run from us... not from fear of being in our presence, but because the food in the nearest camp that bears that symbol," he points to the amulet hanging from the giant's neck, "has been poisoned. You must warn that camp and destroy their food or all will be lost!"
Kanon is shaking profusely as he commands the giant. Not sure whether or not this will work, he prepares himself mentally for his death. In one last burst he yells, "GO!! NOW!!"
He looks to the others, "If he flees... do not attack."
(Moves 30 feet toward the giant, Casts suggestion)
Everything happened in slow motion. One second she was running toward the giant, the next, a boulder was flying toward her. Mara had exactly enough time to think a single thought. Well, shit. Then, darkness.
Pettilaen continues to dash forward, after having taken cover behind a boulder. Kanon's call was reminiscent of his own, but he could tell the suggestion was laced with magic. Heeding Kanon's warning, he ducked behind another boulder within 35 feet of the giant, and waited, keeping his crossbow in hand. Mara's circumstance made the situation clear: don't try and engage the giant in melee. He looked around, seeing the massive stones in place. If we used those for cover, then we could just pick at the giant with ranged attacks.
The plan might work, if Kanon's fails. Let's hope Kanon's doesn't fail.
Portia casts sanctuary on herself and runs toward Mara. She hopes the spell would keep the giant from hitting her . She could only get herself there and hope she was not too late. She had already been too late once, she did not want that again.
Zina was about to ram the flaming sphere into the giant once more when she heard Kanon's spell. It was the same one he had tried to use on her, but this time the target was much more acceptable. So instead of attacking the giant, the illusionist continued forward and crouched in wait.
(OOC: Moved forward 25 feet, took the dodge action.)
Kanon lets out a sigh of relief. The giant literally almost killed half of the party. He turns to the group and shrugs, saying, "I didn't know what else to do..." The words came due to a story he had read about a local hero that convinced a group of bandits to reveal the location of their hideout. It had worked in the books, but the bandits weren't a massive giant with a huge horn.
Rushing over to Portia and Mara, he asks, "Will she be ok?"
"He's going to bring more of them," Zina bit her lower lip in worry, conflicted. On one hand, Kanon had probably saved all of their lives. On the other... Perhaps he had just given away their location to a greater threat.
The gnome stood frozen in place, not moving toward either injured party member. "We need to run," she said, her eyes trained on where the giant had disappeared to. "We need to run and hide."
Pettilaen watched the giant run off, initially at ease: until it started blasting its horn. Braeg. That isn't good. He listened to Zina's worry, about to agree and turn tail and run. "Wait. Knowledge is key. We need eyes on the area."
Sending Gaia up into the sky, he looked through her eyes. She told him of a thunder she had been hearing, unable to focus on it during the battle. Recognizing it to be the sound of hooves, they peered out, seeing a stampede of men on horseback, wearing the iron gauntlet of Torm. "Wait!" he exclaimed. "There's a large group of Tormites charging on horseback toward the giant! Get our fighter up off the ground, we need to go see this!"
Kanon felt the worry flooding off of the others. It was a freaking giant and it took Mara out with one shot! What else could he have done??
He whispers a short song of healing as he touches Mara, curing the worst of her wounds. When her eyes flutter open, he grins, happy that she's alive! "It's gone," he says, "We're safe... for now."
Kanon turns back to Pettilaen, "Do you think they can handle it?" He moves to get a better look at the giant running towards the forest.
As Mara opened her eyes, she saw the kid smiling down at her. She coughed, her chest burning. "Did... did I kick it's ass," she asked in a hoarse whisper. She knew the truth, and damn, if that didn't hurt the pride. She sat up slowly, trying to catch her breath, and looked around. Sure enough, the Giant was gone. She sighed. So much for gaining the respect of these people.
A small chuckle escapes Kanons lips and he responds, "No... but there's an army of Torm's knights that might." He points out in the distance to the giant. "I think we should meet up with them, have you two tend to your wounds, and see what news they bring."
A part of Kanon felt guilty that the knights were about to fight the giant. But at the same time, the giant was under orders to run to his camp. He was mildly curious if it would stop at all to confront the knights. He called his bosses "the masters." So maybe these Knights of the New Dawn really were back. At least now they had a name.
"Wonderful idea," Mara said, getting to a knee. She felt like stomped shit, and it may not have been from her injuries. She struggled to her feet, and took a deep breath, wincing at the pain. "What made it leave? Last thing I remember was it being seriously pissed off at us."
Distracted by his mission and the sound of his own horn, the giant ignores the charging cavalry completely.
From the horsemen, a single voice cries out "To Right!"
In scattered unison, the host responds "To Ruin!"
The turf churns and flies under two-hundred beating hoofs shod in polished steel shoes. As they close the final stretch, the vanguard couches lances while the trailing lines ready swords.
Lance tips penetrate the giant's flesh just before the huge destriers crash into him, hitting with such force that he topples sideways like a child's toy, forced to the ground and trampled under the hooves of the remaining lines. Still alive, he staggers to his feet and blows his horn a few more times, then clutches a club to respond as the horsemen wheel for another pass.
He swings with perfect timing, crushing the head of a horse as it approaches and sending the rider toppling under the charge of his allies, but falls a final time as he's hacked to pieces.
-----
After the giant is well dead, and at the same moment a half-dozen horns respond in the distance, the Hellriders of Elturel approach the party.
"No time for talk," the lead horseman with three chevrons and the figure of a gauntlet painted on his shoulder exclaims. "Pick a rider and mount. We must ride for Candlekeep immediately."
"I apologize," Mara said to a rider. "I may need a little help here." Once upon the mount, she tried again to catch her breath. "I hope you don't mind if I rest my eyes a moment," she said, leaning against the rider's back, and holding him tightly.
The riders amazed Pettilaen. Here was a group of highly trained, organized individuals who worked in unity to achieve astonishing results. His group could be like that, if they'd think a little more. Hearing their request, he gazed longingly at the giant's horn. I could do so many amazing things with that horn... I would be the envy of any gnome I saw! Just imagining the possibilities made him begin to walk towards the horn before a quick hand from a strong arm grabbed him and kept him in place. "Get on. NOW." the rider commanded him.
Remembering what Mara was like and figuring these people to be much more stick-up-the-hole, he climbed up the man's arm and tried to at least sit on his shoulders, before the man man-handled him and plopped him down on the saddle in front of him. "I hate gnomes, so pull another trick like that and I'll kick you off this horse and you can be stampeded to death by those riding behind me." Pettilaen laughed nervously and nodded his head in agreement. This is going to be a dull ride...

"Warn the masters," he yells, his voice so low in pitch that it's difficult to understand.
He breaks into a trot to the northeast, sounding his giant horn repeatedly as he goes.
