Now that DDB has officially launched there are many new faces flocking along with old DDB fires rekindling. For those and many more have lots of questions about what is DDB, what it provides and where it is going. We are extremely lucky that the developers and staff of this site and been so interactive with the community and always answering more questions. However for those who are not following absolutly everything that is posted in these forums it can be hard to keep up and not miss some important information, especially when that information is spread out across so many different threads.
So because of that, to make everyone's lives easier and to hopefully reduce the amount of repeated questions that are asked, here is a compilation of relevant Staff Quotes to hopefully keep everyone in the loop.
Every quote will be preceded by the date it was posted. For more context hit the ">>" next to the quoter's name to be taken to the original. Each section will be ordered from oldest to newest.
I will try keep this thread up to date as much as I can and will try include everything that comes up, however if i have missed something please PM me or post and I will add it in.
I have not included every staff quote in this, as some are not useful, or discuss bugs that have already been fixed, or they discuss beta content that is no longer relevant. Nor are any Site up update posts (though comments on them are), if you want to check them out go here. A Changelog has also been implemented where you can see new updates to the site, theses are not included here either.
Lastly, I would just like to pay homage to VT who put together the original Beta Staff Quotes Page
Cheers, SS
P.S. I think everyone owes Badeye and the DDB Staff a Beer, in the classic Aussie celebratory fashion, for getting through launch and all the hard work they have put into the site.
Actually, even if updates were put in as they came up (as it appears to be done currently) instead of a weekly "patch" but weekly if you gave us a summary/release notes of what was fixed/changed/updated/released the last week I think it would be a great improvement.
Release/patch notes help -- they help us test the things you have changed with your updates to make sure the changes work well. I'd imagine you have to already have this internally, why not release them publicly
This is exactly what is happening, starting two weeks ago with the release of the last two phases.
Expect another deployment today and a coinciding summary of release notes.
There really is no point in any more complaining until pricing gets revealed.
Some product details would be nice:
1. Will I be able to buy the rulebook and have access to it on all my devices for that one price? My iPhone, my PC, my Android tablet.
2. Will I be able to print anything out?
3. Annotations and bookmarking, will they be supported, and will they sync across devices?
4. Will I be able to receive errata seamlessly, and not have to lose my bookmarks and annotations?
5. Will this be more than just a PDF with some custom DRM wrapper around it, like others have tried in the past?
6. Will native pinch and zoom be supported on tablets and phones?
7. What resolution will the graphics be in?
8. Will the rulebooks just be a page for page reproduction of the printed book, or will they be completely hyperlinked and searchable and be more database-like.?
Answers:
1. Yes - one-time purchase for the source. This is usable at launch anywhere you can access a browser, and later offline with the mobile app.
2. Yes, character sheets will export to a PDF for printing. As for the actual content, nothing is stopping you from printing out the pages.
3. Not entirely sure what you mean with this one. Possibly something like what Kindle does? If so, no, it's not in for launch. If there's enough interest, we could explore that as a possibility.
4. All errata will uni-laterally be incorporated in the source content. As an official digital D&D source, it's important that we stay completely current.
5. All the digital sourcebook content is built completely for the web (and later) mobile app - it's definitely not a PDF.
6. Pinch and zoom as per the browser is already happening, and it will be supported in the mobile app once it's available.
7. Depends on the type of image. For typical "art," most things will be around 1000 pixels at the largest dimension to make sure we don't grind things to a halt for slower connections (and we further compress/ reduce the size for placement in the pages). You can lightbox and view/ download the images at the higher 1000 pixel range, however. For maps, they're going to come out to 3000 at the largest dimension if the original map artwork was at least that hi-res.
8. Completely hyperlinked and searchable, just like the rest of the site.
Context: Some users showing concern that development for DDB will "fizzle" and that not enough has been offered yet
I would also like to offer the point that we are launching with exactly what we have said all along would be the launch functionality. This is even one of the reasons we had the three "phases" of functionality on the front page for so long in the beta - to make sure there were no misconceptions about what would be there at launch.
Part of the issue here is that you could ask 100 people what "campaign management" means and you'd have 80 different responses. This is why in interviews and here in the forums I accompanied that messaging early on that "campaign management" for us meant an initial skeleton upon which future functionality would be built, with the exception of the incredibly cool (and generous) Master Tier content sharing feature.
In other words, we are delivering the "full" product for launch. We have made it clear from the beginning that many of the requested features I see being discussed here are for in the future.
The proof will continue to be in the pudding, but I feel we have strongly established so far that we have done what we say we're going to do. One of the reasons I won't reveal timelines for future functionality is that I don't want to fail on commitments. In software development, no one in a right state of mind gives out dates until they are 90% certain because things can and do go wrong. Instead of dates, the prioritization of the roadmap can be shared. I have shared this already too.
As Hartlessd20 mentioned, those priorities can also change based on the pulse of the community. We're making this for players to use after all - we want what's best for the playerbase and will continue to make the main thing the main thing.
I know that this community (of which I am a part!) has been burned for years. All we can do is continue to steadily reach out our hand and hope that we can make some believers out there.
Without, at the very least, NPC generating tools, and encounter building/management I can't see any justification to spend $55/per year for the DM subscription. I was very intrigued and optimistic all the way through the beta but now that it's live with no added functionality to campaign management other than being a virtual file folder for character sheets I don't see much value in this as a tool for running and maintaining a campaign. If broad campaign management functionality gets added in the future I would certainly call the price tag fair and well worth it. But really, robust campaign management should have been complete at launch.
We appreciate the feedback, but we made it very clear from the start that campaign management for launch would be a starting point primarily focused on sharing unlocked content with other players. Saying it "should have been complete" is one perspective among many.
We have had a very successful first week, which would indicate as we expected that many people desire to invest in the service as it currently is. This is a good thing, as it means we will be able to continue development strongly and add the aforementioned robust campaign management over time. We even hope to ramp up our resources with this level of support.
In the meantime, I encourage you to share your feedback on what you would like to see as part of campaign management, as we've come to see that means different things to different people. A thread is consolidating that feedback here.
Unfortunately there will be no update today. We've encountered a couple of challenges that we're working through (as is typical for development).
I hope the Backgrounds revamp is ready for next week, but we'll have to see how it goes.
Regardless, all the changes will be collected in update notes. Additionally, I will be livestreaming updates (at least) monthly starting this month with information about recent changes, the near future, and time for Q&A.
That sounds great and is exactly what I have been hoping for! Will you host it on the D&D Twitch Channel or make your own? Will you also post "patch notes" with the big changes each update?
We'll host it on the D&D Twitch channel and yes to patch notes.
maybe the option here would be that curse make a similar tools that you provide us so they can update and make it work flawlessly without chance that it break because of curse change in the code ? is it a possibility ?
Integrated dice rolling is on our Todo list. We just have some higher priority features on our plate, atm.
This is an example of why I thing the Global Search is NOT efficient or smart.
When I search "Wizard" the FIRST and TOP result should be PHB, Wizard. However, the first results and top is Wizard from SWORD COAST ADVENTURER'S GUIDE. This should NOT be. The global search is NOT working in my opinion. The hierarchy of results should show CORE rules first ALWAYS (PHB, DMG and then Monsters). I wish I could limit my search. When I use Beyond at the table, people with books get to the data faster than me. I have to sift thought useless hits.
I agree with your "wizard" assessment. We've improved global search a great deal since it first entered testing, and we will continue to do so.
While your frustration is obvious and I'm sorry you are dealing with that, it is actually quite helpful that you shared this specific issue since it will help us continue to turn knobs on search to make it better.
I would like to clearly point out something that Badeye has tried to make really clear about their roadmap. Their roadmap is a list of things DDB are going to hopefully implement in the future, but this is not set in stone, as they will adapt to user preference and current needs. So if you want to see something that is not there don't hesitate to show your support and that could means it moves higher up the list. The following are just some snippets that Badeye has let slip about the roadmap.
Looking up and clarifying rules seems to be the most practical use case for a global search. For that reason, I think it would be extremely beneficial to include the Sage Advice rules clarifications as part of the rules compendium.
We have discussed this internally and have agreed it is something we should incorporate. We're kind of focused on getting Phase 2 & 3 released at the moment, so it may be a little while before we get SA added in like we would like. Great idea, and thanks so much for the input!
Ok, just started my first PbP game. Here are some things you could do that would help immensely just making it more friendly.
Dice rolling button You guys are using tinymce as your editor for the forums. You should be able to create a button to roll the dice. A little popup window with options. It would just have to write the proper bbcode directly into the post.
In Character and out of character button This is a little harder to explain. Basically 2 copies of the blockquote button. One for in character text and one for out of character stuff for the DM. This way when going from game to game there would be a nice cohesion in text styles. Everything in the In character box would be stuff NPCs could hear while the other would be out of character questions, comments, etc.
That's it so far. They are pretty simple to write in TinyMCE, honestly say the word and I'll write them for you.
Both of these are definitely on our list. And to Hardcopy's point, they are not terribly difficult, but they do require time. And as these are "Quality of Life" enhancements, they will have to take a back seat to some other features, like say... Phase 2 & 3, site launch, mobile app, etc., etc.
The Dice Roller modal will have to be fairly robust as Skizzerz's API that we're using is amazing in all the different kinds of dice rolls that it can handle.
As far as the character text button, we're going a little further than that. You will be able to post AS your character. Meaning, for example, if you make a dice roll on perception it will use your character's stats. Yes, the character you've built on the site with the character builder. So by default, your post text will be from your character, and we will provide a way to add OOC or OOG text outside of that. By posting as your character we can do some crazy things like replay the thread as a campaign history, tied to characters. Calculate who has done the most damage, had the most crits, and so on, and so on.
Hang in there PC's, we've got a LOT planned. Just takes time.
One of the obstacles I've ran into using other dynamic D&D character sheets (Roll20, etc) is that items that impact Armor Class,Ability Scores, etc are often left to the Players to manually update the impact to stats while things like Weapons have dynamic tie-ins to Ability modifiers. A lot of my Character Sheet review is typically making sure they have the correct AC because of this.
Dynamic options for Item effects to stats
Would be great if there was an item section that, when an item is entered, there are options to tie it to character stats so that things like Armor that impacts AC doesn't accidentally get overlooked at character creation. Some helpful options would be:
Automatic attribution to AC based on Armor Type (Studded Leather, Small Shield, etc)
Automatic attribution to relevant stats based on magic item type (girdle of giant strength, +2 ring of protection, etc)
Tie-in to Homebrew/Campaign Management Phase
One of the harder things for me as a DM is to recap between sessions in a way that the player's have it as a quick cheat sheet (What was the name of that NPC we talked too 4 sessions back?).
It would be great if the Campaign Management system had a "Recap", "Milestone" and "NPC" section that also tied into the character sheets that are part of that campaign.
Character Sheets for players in that campaign would have a simple "Campaign" section on their sheet that had headlines to each for quick reference during a session. This is particularly helpful if printed out for an offline session.
A way to flag/star certain Recaps, Milestones or NPCs so they could quick reference it right off their sheet without having to type it in.
Recap would be a no-frills blog that you could update as a DM (or player in the campaign) with what happened last session.
Milestone would be a no-frills micro-blog a DM could simply add a point of reference for a big event (Party Defeated Dragon on Date).
NPCs would be just a simple descriptor of a Who/What/Where for NPCs they meet along the way.
Player Dashboard
While DMs have DM screens, it'd be great to allow players to have a small area to append snippets to PHB rules they can access quickly on their sheet. Things that commonly get asked during a session could be then referenced quickly on their sheet:
Actions/Bonus Actions/Movement/Attack of Opp/Free Actions
Saving throws
Long Rest/Short Rest
Dazed/Prone/etc rules
Grapple/Charge/etc rules
Appreciate you taking the time to share this. There are some really solid ideas here, and I can confirm that all of them will either be included at launch or are on the roadmap!
Is there any plans to add a roll function on the sheet for melee and range attacks and then a roll for damage like if I use chromatic orb press something that says range attack then if DM says I hit I can press damage???
Definitely planned. We will likely start development on that this year. We're still gathering and reviewing feedback in order to prioritize features, but this one has been consistently near the top.
Out of curiousoty, have you and the team considered having a way for the community to upvote the list of things in development to give all of you a sense of what the community is looking for beyond having to comb through the forums. Something like Trello or occasional surveys?
I can imagine that comes with some downsides as a developer, so I'm wondering if the negative aspects outweigh the potential positives.
We actually ran a survey earlier in the beta that got thousands and thousands of responses that pretty much confirmed what we already had on the roadmap.
The results of said survey:
We will focus on things roughly in that order, as we have been communicating for some time. The only caveat is that something like dice rolling or stream integration is much easier to pull off than, say, combat tracking, so those are likely to get in first due to being lower-hanging fruit.
We will continue to survey and use any other means to gather feedback that's useful going forward.
Not at at launch, but soon after. Our priorities for this week (starting Wednesday) are the Backgrounds revamp, familiars/companions/wild shape, and then some of the layout changes we have mentioned for the builder and sheet. Those won't all be done this week, but that will be the order we tackle them.
Context: User concerned about what is next for future of DDB after launch
We are completely confident and know exactly what is coming next - there exists no indecisiveness at all. I may be one of the most decisive people on the planet, and I can assure you I've already made decisions that will impact everything for months, if not years.
I have already shared what we are working on currently in several places. I'll reiterate it here:
Character builder/ sheet improvements (short term)
Native mobile app initial release with offline access (medium term)
Encounter building and monster progression (longer term)
New things for campaign management (longer term)
The fact that I'm not going to share dates for those things right now is not remotely a lack of confidence. I'm incredibly confident in our team and our ability to move quickly. The character builder didn't even exist (seriously, at all) three months ago.
I won't give dates because it's a terrible idea to do that in software/ web development. Google doesn't give dates. Heck, video game developers don't really give dates until they actually know. And even then, when Red Dead Redemption gets pushed, people complain and complain.
We're going to do "good" for the community, as I believe we have demonstrated through beta and launch. The fact that launch has "gone well" is going to help us make it a reality.
While the option of offline access IS exciting, I have questions regarding the mobile app that I have not seen or seen answer for so far:
will the app also integrate with the forum while the device is connected to wifi or cellular data? Meaning, will it provide for example notifications of subscribed threads or private messages received? Also connected to this, will it have any sort of notification for possible promotions or launch of new material?
The mobile app will rollout out into beta in multiple phases, similar to what we did for the site.
We currently have no plans to implement the forums into the mobile app - forums on mobile are a notoriously difficult to implement from a user perspective. We're not happy with how our mobile display works on the site on a phone even.
If we see there's feedback contrary to our current plans, we'll certainly listen to that, so let your voice be heard.
Will the next phase of development improve the character sheet on non-phone interfaces? Drilling down through all the expanding menus is such a pain. I'd very much prefer a simple popup. I just need it to list my features and let me tap a link to display a pop up that can then be dismissed (unlike beta).
Desktop character builder/ sheet views are going through a full revamp based on thousands of posts of feedback. This process will take us a little while (but not too long), and it will make marked improvements. Collapsibles are changing to another UI.
I really shouldn't do this as things can change, but I'll post a super small snippet preview of part of the desktop sheet view. Please keep in mind this is WIP and NOT final.
Yeah, it's a WIP as BadEye said, so things will shuffle a bit, I expect. Certainly an encouraging preview though!
Wish they would give a rough timeline
To repeat the well-versed litany, I won't give timelines for unreleased development until it is clear we will hit those timelines.
What I can give, however, is the prioritization of the development pipeline. This changes occasionally with community feedback, but currently it is:
Backgrounds revamp (soon), equipment management updates (starting equipment, containers), character sharing/ copying/ ownership transfer, source filtering (and the first pass of AL aids), wild shape/ companions, and then this revamp.
To put it in perspective, the reason I've said this mock is not a final product is it is just that - a mock. We are in the concept phase on this since we are incorporating thousands and thousands of posts of feedback. I would love to move quicker, but it would have been a mistake to react hastily on something as important as this is. The best path long-term was to compile all the feedback and act when we had clarity.
While it won't be our policy to reveal our full, blown out roadmap (too many variables), I will be sharing what I've shared above and discuss it via our monthly developer update livestream that will start in the next couple of weeks. More on that soon.
already seeing some rumblings that forcing the "hero" sub on people to use homebrew is you trying to profit off of other people's work, drawing comparison to Bethesda and paid mods.
why can't free users add homebrew content to their game if they can still share what they create or just recreate it as a private homebrew?
Free users can add all the homebrew they want - it's just their own homebrew. You are completely free to re-create anything you want to use for play.
I'm already saving. Will be very difficult to get in on that one week deal in time, me being a pov and all, but I need to give up a few luxuries anyway. Regardless, will there be other sales occasionally? Maybe pre-purchase of content for a discount?
I can't confirm specifics, but sales will certainly happen periodically.
I've paid $50 for the PHB, $50 for the DMG and $50 for the MM, and now I'm being told that if I want to use your site to create a Champion fighter (public-domain rules), I can do that with a basic subscription, but if I want to create a Battle Master fighter (PHB rules), I have to pay another $20 to $30. Based on this, you could say that the PHB lists for $50, but a PHB whose content is usable in WotC's own D&D Beyond online tool actually lists for $80 (on sale for $70 for a limited time!).
From your point of view, maybe, this is a bargain -- you can get the entire PHB digitally for 40 to 60 percent less than you'd spend on the hardcover. But for those of us who already own the hardcovers, this isn't giving us a lift up to the next level of technology. Just the opposite: It's a disincentive for us ever to take that step. It's crippling your entire service, so that not only will we not buy the digital sourcebooks, we won't become monthly subscribers, either.
If it's WotC's opinion that its own products are "outdated," the logical conclusion is that the whole goal of this endeavor is for WotC to get out of the business of selling printed books entirely. If that's the case, it may as well be upfront and honest about it.
The Champion subclass is and will always be free. No subscription needed. If you desire a specific subclass only, you will be able to homebrew it for free or you can buy that subclass only (3.99 $).
Turning D&D into something akin to a pay-to-win game.
I'm typically pretty patient and don't respond to these kinds of posts, but I've seen this pop up a few times and thought I'd chime in:
There is nothing about this sentiment that makes any sense.
1) D&D is not a competitive game in the first place - i.e. "winning" is not something that actually happens. This would be like saying that by buying one song off an album (instead of the entire album) is paying to win. I didn't think listening to music had winners and losers.
2) Even if we derive some definition of "winning" as "maximum enjoyment" or something, having access to one subclass over another does not objectively impact that framework. We are offering the ability to unlock content in smaller chunks purely for flexibility - it is completely a choice for players, not a compelled requirement.
3) As mentioned in the post you quoted, you will be able to homebrew most anything you want eventually, meaning that if you are willing to put in the work to do so, you won't be paying for anything.
Did you see the votes at the beginning of this thread? 10% of respondents would be willing to pay for a sub... It's really amazing that Paizo has kept 3.5 around for so long IMO, but they have and continue to do well with it. I haven't seen any hard stats on player base for Paizo VS D&D just anecdotal stuff. My point has been that as a company Paizo is putting a lot on the table (OGL or no OGL you can't look through all Paizo's core rulebooks and say its all covered under the original OGL, If you have some hard data on that issue I would love to see it) while WoTC is up to their old nonsense. Honestly, might as well be 4th E all over again.
No of course not but unlike Fantasy Grounds which is a complete VTT set your really not getting anything here but some bells and whistles. Sure the stuff is neat, but anyone who's been playing the game or is not new in general to table top isn't going to need the bells and whistles to play D&D 5th E. Seriously do me a favor and go look through the FAQ on pricing. Tell me exactly what you expect to get that is new that someone who doesn't already own the books have. Unlike Fantasy Grounds and Roll20 this site offers nothing new. Just tries to sell content that most of us have already paid for by adding in processes that you can easily, and have been easily, doing yourself like: character creation, initiative tracker, etc and asks for more money.
While I appreciate you taking the time to post your feedback, I disagree with virtually everything you have said here, and, if I had the time, could provide plenty of data to refute it.
We have certainly seen the percentage of people that would be willing to pay for a subscription (which is in line with our internal guidance since before we publicly announced the product), and it's a good thing we have structured things where a subscription is not a hard requirement to use the toolset.
The tone (and redundancy) of the continued posts are on the border of being shut down. It's fairly clear at this point this isn't about feedback, but rather a rant or an attempt to pick a fight. Feel free to post again if you have something new to contribute to the discussion. Otherwise, it's time to move along.
Context: Users asking about a subscription fee that also includes unlocked content
Feedback being heard and executing on all points of feedback are entirely different things. We have also acknowledged this topic several times before on these forums.
I assure you, the feedback has been heard, but we are not able to offer this kind of subscription option.
I do have a question though. Do the above items provide their information in the compendium as well as the character builder? For example, if I bought the VGtM Races, would I see those races' details in the compendium? Or do I have to buy the entire source's compendium content to see those items?
Compendium pages are available through the entire source or the compendium content bundle - unlocking a race's details individually makes that race available in the toolset.
I've been looking over which monster and magic item bundles from the adventures to purchase, and I've noticed that Tales from the Yawning Portal is lacking such bundles at the moment, unlike all the other adventures. I see that the individual adventures within the book are available for purchase separately; does this somehow preclude the monsters and magic items from individual or bundled sale? Or was that just (understandably) overlooked in the run-up to launch?
Same here.
It's a bit strange the way the TftYP bundles need to work in order to grant access to the separate adventures within the source.
We are working to figure out how to offer the monsters/ items bundles for the whole source and hope to have something in place soon.
Since mods and such are here, Goliath has a place in the height/weight table in Volos, what will be done for the other EE player races once release comes?
Oh, it's not just mods that are here!
We will follow WotC's direction with the other races - if we get the information we will provide it.
I sincerely hope that after I buy multiple books and modules that the information won't be spread out. I want them organized by playable races, backgrounds, spells, monsters, etc. Not by PHB, MM, SCAG, VGtM, etc.
They will be organized in both ways.
For those that want to enter through the source itself, you can do so in the compendium. The content will also be present and accounted for in-context in the compendium, listings, builder, and so on.
One thing I don't think I've seen addressed, and pardon if it has somewhere in the last 18 pages (this thread moves fast!) is whether Curse will be aiming for release parity with future books. I love the site and resources you've built here enough to want to go full digital with future books, but will something like Xanathar's Guide be available along with the physical edition, or will that be held back a bit so as not to threaten hardcover sales?
Day and date with the hobby store release on all future products.
I should have linked to it, but that's the screenshot I was referring to and have seen several times in this thread. Also, YouTubers and streamers would help as well, but I would like something I can click around myself and give a test run, especially an adventure since that format is much more complex than a sourcebook.
Thank you both, however!
There will certainly be more in-depth previews between now and launch.
In the short term, I can share that the adventures will have the full text of the adventure with all of the interior art. Maps and art will be clickable into a lightbox for high-res versions, and from there they can be downloaded for full-size versions in you want to use those in a VTT or anywhere else.
All relevant text will be cross-linked/ tooltipped like everything else in the site. It's really nice to run a session using these...just hover over a monster to see AC, Hit Points, and so on on the fly, or click out to a new tab to see the creature's full statistics very quickly.
In short, it is a digital copy of the book with full linking and all art.
Of course, these will become even more useful down the road as we add the encounter builder and combat management - all these adventures will automatically receive all that functionality.
The more I think about this model, the more I like it. I'll never stop buying the books, but this format is so handy when running games, even just book marking creatures when running encounters is a huge time saver. So two questions regarding the content.
1. How are you handling errata? Are you incorporating the latest updates on an ongoing basis, or is it a snapshot in time?
2. Since you are not owned by WotC, what about Tome of Beasts and other content from Kobold Press? Many of us mix and match monsters here, and at some point, having a single place to setup content would be great. What are your plans (@BadEye) around high-profile 3rd-party content? I've seen this topic raised a bit in the forums, but I've yet to see any response.
1. Errata will be incorporated as it comes in. As an official source, it's important that we always stay current.
2. No new details on this yet, but I can assure you the demand for this type of content has been heard. We're working on how to make it happen.
+1. Very curious about it myself. I can see having ads in all the tool capabilities across the platform, but if I've purchased the PHB, I don't think I should see ads in the Compendium, at least.
No ads will be displayed on compendium pages for purchased content, even for free accounts.
Will there be both DM (labeled) and player (unlabeled) versions of the high-res maps?
The player versions are what's of the most use for VTTs or large printing for use with minis. I don't want my players seeing the labels, especially things like the locations of secret doors.
The maps will display as they do in the books.
We could look into adding the player "clean" versions where they are available to us. I'll see what we can do about that.
Context: Users unable to access single adventures they that unlocked inside TfoYP
Okay, the issue was not related to permissions - you all have the content unlocked. It was all a navigation issue of not knowing where it was.
In the short term, we have updated the Adventures section for Tales from the Yawning Portal to include the individual adventures. Clicking those will allow you to access the adventure.
We'll see what we can do to improve the navigation to that content in the future.
We are working on an actual tooltip for charms/ boons. Those will be linked then for sure, but we'll see if we have time to link some of these to their compendium page in the meantime.
So I may be thick, but why wouldn't the Tortle Package be in the Adventures section alongside ToA?
Instead of the Rules section? I guess I never thought much about it, but you have a point. It does supplement the ToA adventure. I am guessing the reasoning was that it was a rules supplement with minimal adventure material, so they put it in rules.
We went back and forth on this and ultimately decided the Rules section. We might actually add an entirely new section for "Supplements" as we move forward and these become more frequent.
Holy Avenger has the extraneous text that is not part of the DMG entry:
"Proficiency with a longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it."
All weapons do, I'm pretty sure.
This is just a display issue for "parent" non-specific items that we've added to the list. The base "holy avenger" shouldn't be displaying longsword properties, but the holy avenger longsword should. This is on the list and will be addressed soon.
Hello, not sure if it has been mentioned or this already exists but it would be fantastic to be able to create my own list of monsters for use in a campaign of a few encounters I know I'm running in a session. So in my content area I could have pre made lists of monsters stored.
Same goes for items, spells (aka a spellbook), conditions or rules, pretty much anything in the compendiums.
I guess a way to save my searches into my own lists of things effectively organizing it into my own custom session handbooks
BTW love the interface and overall experience with beyond, just wish I could save and bookmark content easier.
Thr ability to "favorite" elements into lists is definitely on the list. We'll update when we have more to share.
All the custom monster adaptation from digital contents unlocked are missing... I expected to find them at least in the digital edition of the adventures...
Going to make an example: Rocktopus from Out of the Abyss. I had to homebrew this, as I had to do for the lots of NPC described (with names) in the campaign module...
Having paid to have the same digital content I already paid buying the hardcopy, does'nt mean I don't expect to get something more... at least those monster and NPCs already compiled.
Or do have I to homebrew all of them and deliver them for public use?
Thanks in advance.
The Rocktopus is a giant octopus with a single additional ability, as covered in that compendium page. Monsters and NPCs that are found in the listing are based on actual full stat blocks for those creatures, where the Rocktopus does not have one. You shouldn't have to homebrew anything - you would run the monster with that single extra ability.
We have statted out variants occasionally, especially if the Challenge Rating changes for the variant from the original creature, but this should be considered a "bonus" and not an expectation.
An ice troll is a troll with a single additional ability, as is a scrag. Klauth (or whatever his name is) is an ancient red dragon with enough additional abilities to increase his CR.
To repeat my statement - we have statted out variants occasionally, but this should be considered a "bonus" and not an expectation.
We could potentially revisit some of the exceptions/ variants in some of the adventures at some point, but the standard procedure will be to offer statistics for those creatures that have an actual stat block in the supplement.
I've just purchased the Legendary Bundle and so far have been impressed with the content. Particularly the high red art etc. But here's an observation:
There's no monster entry for Zephyros, or the Lord's Alliance Shield Dwarves from Storm King's Thunder. Both these characters ask you to use stats of another and modify them. For small changes that's understandable, but given the tools you guys have created, surely having a dedicated stat block for these (given that they have a none trivial amount of modification from the base stats) is something you would consider? I mean, you even have a separate entry for the Ice Toads in Rise of Tiamat and they only changed like two stats :P
(Edit: It also occurs to me that doing so would require you guys to retag each mention of those modified monsters as a tooltip etc which is a touch more work.)
I imagine there are a few other monsters spread across the books with substantial changes from the base block that haven't been added.
Also, yes, I know I can Homebrew them Just thinking that if you guys did it once, you'd save thousands of DM of the hassle.
Thanks!
Apparently, those aren't "official stat blocks", so they aren't currently planning to do them any time soon.
When printing out the stats for the Chultan Guides in Tomb of Annihilation, I noticed that the hyperlinks print out with the linked tag instead of text. Sometimes I need to hand a monster stat block to a player for use as a companion or NPC.
Can improvements be made to the monster printing? A monster export similar to player export would be excellent, just to do handouts. Any watermarking or other measure that need to be taken are fine/acceptable.
This is on the radar, but I'm not entirely sure when we'll get to it.
Forgive me if this has been mentioned once or more, but when looking at monster listings, I would love to be able to jump to the place in the Monster Manual, source book, or adventure where the full listing with the flavor text can be found. I always find it exceptionally helpful for running the monsters. (Also, I know Strahd has some conditional abilities that aren't listed in his monster listing, such as the ability to summon creatures when away from his lair.)
It's been mentioned, but not nearly often enough.
No need to shout it from the rooftops - this will come soon. Thanks!
I love seeing that the equipment/weapons/magic items is getting some attention. I thinks is really important to keep new players in mind for character creation. Maybe add an option(s) for the suggested loadout that is listed in the PHB.
This has such great potential for a tool for help us DMs that bring new players to our hobby!
The Quick Build option from the starting screen actually builds a 1st level character for each class that using all of the suggested "loadouts" in the Player's Hanbook, check that part out.
We also intend to expand the Quick Build method in the future to allow for higher than 1st level. You could choose level 18 paladin and get an "optimized" template of a paladin, with appropriate gear, ability choices, and so on. This is in contrast to the Randomize method, which is completely and totally random.
I'm still confused, if I am part of a content sharing campaign and another player has the DMG, can I make a character outside of any campaign (or in a campaign without anyone who has the DMG) that wields a Sword of Answering?
No, only that character in that campaign will have access to the Sword of Answering. However, as the user that owns that character, you will be able to see the full details of the Sword of Answering in the listings and also have access to the digital version of the DMG in the compendium.
Ok, so if I make a Swashbuckler in a content sharing campaign and another player has SCAG, (and I don't) I can access the character if that player leaves the campaign or the campaign is deleted?
If the user that owns the content leaves the campaign, or the campaign is deleted, your character will remain as-is, until you try to modify something on that character that was SCAG specific. Meaning, if you changed from swashbuckler to assassin, you'd not be able to go back to swashbuckler. (Unless you join another campaign with that character and that campaign has access to SCAG).
I know it sounds confusing, but it will be more clear in practice.
Is there a way to add or select your starting equipment or does that have to be done manually? It'd be nice for newer players to just have a list to pick from like proficiencies.
This is also planned for the near future. For some of the systems, we had to establish a starting point that is at minimum as convenient as pen and paper and improve from there.
This is not a challenge for us to do - it simply takes some time and has been lower on the priority list than say, the spells and equipment management rework.
Not at at launch, but soon after. Our priorities for this week (starting Wednesday) are the Backgrounds revamp, familiars/companions/wild shape, and then some of the layout changes we have mentioned for the builder and sheet. Those won't all be done this week, but that will be the order we tackle them.
Is there a way to add bonus feats to a character that I'm not seeing? I give the players a bonus feat at level 1 and I would like to be able to have them add that to their sheet.
If not, I would like to request to add this somewhere to the list of customizations. I can bootleg it with a homebrew magic item for now, but it would be a cool feature to have.
Custom "rule-breaking" things like extra feats are definitely on the list and will be included soon.
Agonizing Blast - Not auto-magically adding Charisma modifier to damage listing for Eldritch Blast.
I can see the Eldritch Invocation has been added to 'features' section of my Warlock, but the spell listing in attacks only has 1d10 listed, as opposed to 1d10 + 3 (Cha).
Just wondering whether other things may have been missed too?
This is certainly on the list and will make it in soon. In the meantime, you can use the 'Customize' area under Eldritch Blast to add bonus damage equal to your Charisma modifier. Here's an example where my warlock's Charisma is 16:
Since D&D has quite a few rules and exceptions to those rules, we are working to provide customization opportunities to cover some of the exception cases while we tackle all the little mechanics at the end of each spider web strand.
We are moving quickly, but there are literally hundreds of unique cases like this that are on the list. We've already put thousands of these in place, so it won't take too much longer!
Could we please get the ability to re-assign a character that has been created to another player that is in our campaign? Currently I can't create a pre-gen and assign it to the player when they join.
This is on the list (in addition to simply sharing a read-only view of a character). I'll update when we have more information.
Anyone else find that the "randomized" character generator doesn't prioritize the primary or secondary ability scores of the class? For example, Fighters are generated with Intelligence as the highest score, not Strength, etc.
Randomize definitely randomizes. We intend to build out the "Quick Build" method of character creation to create more optimized versions of each class from levels 1 to 20.
That way, a new player can come directly into the builder, choose a class and level, and be ready to go with something that will work well.
This will of course be useful for NPCs too.
My hope is to get that added fairly soon - we'll keep you updated!
Right now we do not reset weapons "automagically" during short/long rest. The reason is most of the official items have reset rules have you roll dice to see how many charges you actually recover. We hope to improve this to where you can record dice roll numbers in the UI to manage that all in one place. Thank you for the report.
We definitely will improve the starting equipment process in the future, but as PinkRose said, the only current information is inside that starting equipment menu item. Thanks for the feedback and hope you enjoy the tools!
Can we please have full customization added to the digital character sheet? The ability to add a language or a feat that your DM allows you without having to Homebrew a magic item that grants the same properties would be great. It would be nice to just have a "+" next to the main fields like Features. You could use the + and then add a feat even if your character would normally not have one. Same for languages, proficiencies, etc.
This is also being added soon, just after we complete our revamp of Backgrounds next week.
Any plans to add an option where we can flag character sheets to be visible to others outside of the DDB campaign structure? I'm in a PbP game and I'd like that group to be able to see my DDB character sheet easily.
This is definitely planned. I hope to share more details soon.
Is there any information that can be shared regarding the changes to the PDF character sheets and maybe a general time table for when it will be available. I am waiting on this specifically before making any purchases.
PDF updates are included in the "Character Builder/ Sheet Improvements" phase that is in progress now. You'll start seeing changes there following the Backgrounds revamp and companions support. We'll keep everyone updated!
It might be a good idea to include all character options in the Character Builder, but "grey out" locked choices (so that people can clearly see they need to buy something). For every person who posts here saying something is "missing", there's bound to be more who just give up.
Yes, this is already in progress. The entire way choices are presented will be reworked to be a bit more useful than a typical dropdown.
I hope that as we start adding cool options to break RAW that we hide them away on some master page so the dials and levers don't confuse new players and new DMs, not to mention those who usually play RAW and don't need any of those options.
I know I ranted about this last week with being able to select sources but please hurry up and make this a thing. It's frustrating trying to build Adventure League characters and having to look up the sources to make sure I'm not pulling from a book I shouldn't be. PHB + 1 other source... shouldn't be that difficult to filter out in the builder :)
It's not a matter of difficulty - it's a matter of having a set number of people working on DDB, having a set number of hours in each day, and having a huge list of things that we're working on to continue to forge ahead with improvements.
This is on the list and we will get to it as soon as possible, I assure you.
It would be great if I could, as DM, create a character and transfer the ownership of it to a player. Or at least make it editable by them. The process of creating a character can be a bit labor-intensive for some people who would still really like to use the service.
Changing owners of characters is a planned feature. It will have to have some restrictions to ensure content sharing exploits are minimized, such as you can freely transfer within a campaign, etc.
This will also make things easier when we build out the Quick Build feature fully. Right now, Randomize creates a truly random character with no accounting for optimization. Quick Build will expand beyond 1st level characters to allow optimized builds for levels 1 through 20. A DM could create a solid character for a player in less than 30 seconds when that's available, and then transfer that character.
No timelines available for these two features, but they are pretty high on the list.
Could we have a way to make copies of a character we have created?
Definitely a planned feature. I hope we can get to sharing, copying, and transferring ownership of characters after the Backgrounds revamp and Equipment updates (starting equipment choices, equipment packs, containers).
These are not available yet, but we're working on it. Homebrew backgrounds will allow for this, but we plan to have a better solution sooner than that.
It would be great if you could use an existing character as a base for a second character. I use the same character for different campaigns and they are slightly different (level, items etc.). Thanks!
Yeah, that would be cool. Like a 'duplicate' or 'copy' button.
This is definitely coming, relatively soon.
Now that the backgrounds revamp is out, the next thing we're tackling is equipment (starting equipment, weights, etc.). Following that we'll be doing character sharing/ copying/ transferring.
Adding in a way to rearrange characters in alphabetical order would be nice. Also, being able to sort characters into folders would be great. I have characters that I make as NPCs and other that I use to play so it would be nice to neatly organize them.
I know its jumping the gun a bit to ask. But I know y'all are working on equipment revamp next. What can we expect from that? I am hoping to see equipment from Background automatically added to inventory. Is it possible to do something similar with class starting gear vs starting gold? LIke the drop-down menu from attribute improvement where you chose A or B for your gear? And if so how would you implement a drop-down for nonspecific items? Like where it says "A simple weapon" I am guessing something like a drop-down of the simple weapons. With maybe an option to list it to weapons you are proficient in?
Handling all the things you mention is indeed in the scope of what we're doing currently.
When I'm viewing the character sheet right now it's too overloaded. The features list shows too much information. For instance if I'm playing a ranger, the only hunter feature I care about is the one I selected. On my character sheet showing me the two I didn't pick is just two things I have to scroll past to ready the option I selected. It's even worse for the warlock with their invocations. When I'm playing I don't need to see the entire list of every invocation option--only the ones that I selected. Cramming all of this into the phone-sized panels and not using popups just compounds the problem.
As I mentioned in the release notes, desktop views are not remotely finalized. We are testing and confirming UI and flow at present in order to avoid rework on desktop views later.
Layout and presentation of information will change on the larger screens.
As for the display of only what you have chosen, we are working on that as well.
Currently, there is not a 'view only' version of the character page. If we allowed anyone to access it, they'd be able to edit it. That is why we currently limit access to a character to either the person that created it or a DM of a campaign that character is in.
We will be adding a view only version of the page in the near future so you can share it with others.
Context: User says that the character sheet is rather cumbersome
We are making changes to hide things like the "Age" and "Alignment" traits from the sheet since we agree they're not too necessary during play.
We are also working on getting more information outside the collapsibles and into clear view. This will be a total overhaul when that hits.
Since we have the ability to display ALL the information for a certain trait, feature, attack, etc., we have introduced a new problem that most character sheets or other character management tools don't have. A paper character sheet doesn't have problems with it - folks either write only trait names and page references to go look them up or names and brief notes on what they do.
In order to get all of that content readily-available in context like we are, we have to collapse something. The trick is finding the "break point" between what is displayed at a glance and what is tucked away close at hand.
We're going to continue to tweak all of this until we get to a good place. When we feel comfortable there, we'll tackle making the desktop display an incredible experience - we still are optimizing for mobile in order to avoid wasted time and rework in these early iterations.
Collapsing traits isn't a great solution. I would prefer the ability to hide information.
Having tabs for different functions (combat, exploration, interaction, etc.) is a great idea. I don't need the details of the Actor feat in a fight, nor do I need to know what rage does while exploring an abandoned temple. The compendium already tags a lot of this, so doing the same for race and class features makes sense.
Also, I really want to lobby for adding the damage to the collapsed attacks. 9 times out of 10 all you need is the attack bonus and damage.
Having tabs or sections is just another form of collapsing. Again, the key is to figure out what is most useful to have at a glance and what can be folded into a "read more" or tab.
We will continue to experiment to find that balance.
We are also absolutely pulling damage (and other pertinent details) out of the collapsible header. The idea with what we're doing on that rework is that the description would be collapsed and everything else would be in plain view. Basically, anything you would have had to look up in a book would be collapsed but easy to get to.
I think you're trying to get too much done on one page. That's a good thing if you're trying to make a printable sheet, but not the best use of screen space if I'm playing with digital content alone. If you're trying to cram everything on one screen, most things will need multiple clicks to actually read. If you separate the sheet out into multiple tabs, you can expand most things, so that when I'm wondering if I have a something I don't remember well in a container, I can just go to the equipment tab, and all the equipment is immediately visible. Kinda like a much more fancy and functional "expand all."
We already break the information down into sections on mobile, and we will continue to evaluate what those sections should be.
For instance, we are in progress on a change to have a Proficiencies section that has skills, tools, languages, etc. We are also going to add an Actions section that will list features by action, bonus action, reaction, etc.
Looks good... only had a few minutes to take a peek, but my first inclination would be that your class / racial abilities could be expanded on.
I.E. I made a random character that came up with a Lvl 10 Cleric/Ranger/Sorcerer I get the following list: (sorry so long)
Sorcerer: - Draconic Resilience - Dragon Ancestor - Hit Points - Proficiencies - Sorcerous Origin - Spellcasting - Sorcery Points Cleric: - Bonus Proficiency - Disciple of Life - Divine Domain - Hit Points - Proficiencies - Spellcasting - Channel Divinity - Channel Divinity: Preserve Life Ranger: - Favored Enemy - Hit Points - Natural Explorer - Proficiencies - Fighting Style - Spellcasting - Hunter’s Prey - Primeval Awareness - Ranger Archetype - Ability Score Improvement - Extra Attack Racial Traits: - Darkvision - Keen Senses - Fey Ancestry - Trance - Elf Weapon Training - Mask of the Wild
I'd really like the descriptions as well.
Some of these aren't needed (spellcasting / proficiencies / hit points, etc)
But Disciple of life... kind of important to know what it does "Also starting at 1st level, your healing spells are more effective. Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell’s level."
Could be abbreviated somehow. We all have out favorite sheets, and one of the reasons I like some of them is when I enter a class feature, racial trait, feat, etc.. it autofills some good info for me.
This would be HUGE help to beginning players. And would cut down on the amount of editing needed to get the sheet to be in a workable format for the table.
Going to be very hard to list full descriptions for class features in the space that's provided in the PDF. Those other "favorite" sheets have different layouts that allow for expanded descriptions.
We will offer other types of formats in the future and we will certainly look for ways to get more information that would be useful into the export.
I had that issue earlier as well however all of the characters are showing up with the proper skills checked now. so either it was something they addressed, or I had a funky export.
If it happened to be a Bard, we are currently filling in the bubbles for Jack of All Trades.
We went back and forth over what was more useful - the official sheet doesn't really have a way for it to work. If we get the feedback that marking it all as a reminder for Jack of All Trades, we can make the change.
I really appreciate the effort on this. thank you. if you ever get around to iterating on this and adding some polish please take a look at orcpub2 and their pdf exports. what i love about those is that all FEATURES of a character that can typically be tied to an *action (Action, Bonus Action, Reaction, Interaction) all of those are detailed on the front of the page in "FEATURES & TRAITS" and then your other things that are nice to know but do not map specifically to an *action portion of a turn (like your Background feature) all of those go on the second page in "ADDITIONAL FEATURES & TRAITS". I love that in the heat of battle right on the front page the players have all of their options visible to consider right in front of their face.
at least consider if a pattern like that would be beneficial to your users.
We already have an entire actions economy system that's in progress and will be shared soon that will do what you're describing.
Will damage on spell headers (or at least cantrips) be included in the additional improvements?
Doing this for cantrips will definitely happen (very soon). It's much tougher for other spells because of scaling. The "at a glance" changes will be on the verge of full revamp, so those will take a bit longer but still are high on the priority list.
Just to check in: Any word on if additional character sheet options will be available by launch? I really want to ask a timeframe, but I understand that if they aren't planned for launch you won't want to give one.
I ask because more detailed character sheet options will make this immediately more useful for some of the younger players. My kids are now into it. My 8 year old daughter is even DM for three campaigns (baffles the mind). And the less they have to go to books to look things up the better.
AD
There will be no new PDF formats for launch, but we will continue to tweak and improve the current one for several weeks after launch.
New templates/ options are on the roadmap, and we will explore as many possibilities as we can support down the road.
Launch is right around the corner, so I just wanted to address one lingering problem I have with the digital character sheet.
The Features and Description boxes are still a confusing jumble. I appreciate the fact that much of the information that was repeated elsewhere in the character sheet has been excised (though some could still be taken out, e.g. Dwarven Combat Training that already appears in Proficiencies). Well done there! But I keep thinking that the organization of what remains needs work.
Right now it's organized into the following categories: Racial Traits, Class Features, Background, etc. While those categories are appropriate during the stages of character creation, I find them less so once the character is in play. For example, if I have immunity to disease, does it matter in-play if that is a racial trait, class feature, or background feature? No, all that matters is that it's noticeable so that when my character is exposed to disease, I can see I'm immune to it.
I would suggest new subboxes that arrange the information with play in mind be instituted. Categories might be as follows: Resistances and Immunities, Senses, Combat Abilities, Movement, Social Abilities, Exploration Abilities, etc.
Organized this way, I would be able to quickly find the pertinent information to the situation I find myself. I'm in the dark? I open the Senses tab and find that I have Darkvision and Divine Sense. In combat? I open the Combat Abilities tab and see that, in addition to my weapon and spell attacks in the Attacks box, I also have Lay on Hands, Fighting Style: Protection, Divine Smite, and Channel Divinity. I don't have to go hunting in two or more dropdowns. It's all right there.
We have been working on an approach almost identical to this since the first day or so after releasing the digital sheet into beta. It won't be out by Tuesday, but it won't be too terribly far down the road.
In addition to much of what you have already described here, there will also be a heavy emphasis on action economy since that impacts play so much.
Our starting point was to make sure that we made character creation something that was a little easier and made sense. We will continue to explore ways to make the digital sheet more useful for play. We are in complete agreement that the two are trying to accomplish different things and therefore require different approaches.
Appreciate the feedback and I'm glad to hear some confirmation that we are headed in the right directio
I should've said that if we're going to keep the series of boxes within boxes (the design Curse seems to be going for), we should have categories that make sense. But, like you, my preference is to take features out of subboxes, and simply present a list of alphabetical feature names with the ability to open them to get full details.
So the Features box would look like this for a 1st-level half-orc noble fighter?
We appreciate all the feedback here (and many other places) and have paid close attention to it.
I feel like what we're going to end up with will be better than what you've got there. We'll start sharing that when we get to it in a few weeks.
The current sheet is confusing. Limited use is NOT a feature of the rules of D&D, and though I understand it's purpose it will confuse several of my players.
Please don't try to resolve that by making it more confusing.
This is the philosophy we're using, including moving limited use functionality into the relevant areas.
I definitely encourage the feedback to keep coming, but we are addressing most everything I've seen with the revamp here.
Not at at launch, but soon after. Our priorities for this week (starting Wednesday) are the Backgrounds revamp, familiars/companions/wild shape, and then some of the layout changes we have mentioned for the builder and sheet. Those won't all be done this week, but that will be the order we tackle them.
Yea as mentioned, iOS does not play nicely with form fillable PDFs. If you can open them in a more advanced PDF app, you should be able to see all the information showing up! We will continue to investigate other ways we can improve this.
I'd like more information on the character sheet that allows players to play the game without having to refer to books.
For example, instead of "Bardic Inspiration (d8)", I'd like to see something like "Bardic Inspiration (Bonus Action, 60ft, 1d8, lasts for 10 minutes, 4 (CHA Mod) uses, regained on long rest."
Ideally there would be four little check boxes on the sheet (like the ones for death saves) to pencil in when the feature is used.
I'm assuming you are talking about the PDF sheet and not the digital sheet since you say "pencil in" here.
You can do what you mention in the digital sheet:
As for the PDF export, there are big changes on the way for it, including short descriptions for the features, that will hopefully keep players from having to look any of the abilities up in books or the compendium.
PDF updates are included in the character builder/ sheet improvements, which are our highest working highest priority. You'll start seeing PDF updates following the Backgrounds revamp and companions support.
Ah, I thought so. Right now the backstory text is not being sent over to the PDF, however we will be continuously tweaking the PDF functionality based on user feedback.
Probably been brought up before, but can we get the material components for spells to show up in the online character sheet? I was using Beyond on mobile and important things like how much find familiar costs in material components aren't there.
Context: Users points out ideas for improvement for the digital desktop character sheet
It is a lot of work that we're already in the middle of - as explained previously, we are doing an overhaul of the character builder and sheet UI in the coming months.
Here's some feedback, then: I can't stand the "--", "P", and "E" that the new sheet uses to denote proficiency. What do you use for half proficiency? "H"? How do you tell the difference between half proficiency rounded down and half proficiency rounded up?
And then there's the whole Expertise issue.
We plan to actually use a 1/2 (but super/sub set to take up one character space) with an arrow pointing up or down. So no "H," not at all. Those will also be circles instead of boxes, and many more things that will become clear in the final (which this is not!).
At first glance, I like the new layout, aside from not being thrilled with the orange-gold color of the "frames," which is hardly a significant issue, since a color I'd like better would be less pleasing so someone else. Oh, and I really liked having Ability modifiers and saving throws in neighboring columns as is currently the case, but not in the mock-up. (I would, however, be able to adjust to the mockups style)
It did, however, remind me of another suggestion I wanted to make. I appreciate how things like advantage on certain types of saving throws are noted currently on the sheet ( and the mockup.) I think the Hafling "Lucky" trait should show up in the same way. I completely forgot about it when playing last night; having it listed there would have helped.
In terms of the new layout, I appreciate moving spells, equipment, etc, up so that the most critical categories are available without scrolling. I'll take clicking on a "tab" over scrolling down any day.
Well, I guess I'll share one more thing I probably shouldn't, but the frame color will be determined by your choice of several theme colors (think Twitter).
Will it be possible to change it to be written in second person instead of first person?
No, there's a great deal of manual effort that goes into these snippets/ short descriptions, and we can't support the grammatical implications of an option for that.
We'll start a poll on whether more people want it in first or second person. Good luck on your side winning!
Will it be possible not have some things on the PDF? In this instance, I’m not sure why I would need JoAT listed if it’s calculated in my stats.
Any preview mocks I've posted here are not final and do not necessarily represent what will ship. It is entirely layout, look, and feel we're conceptualizing now.
In this case, we just pasted in a big string of text that included all the Bard's class features. Features that are directly represented other places on the sheet (such as the 1/2 proficiency display on the skills pane) will not be included in the Features & Traits section.
On equipment, it would be nice to have a visual UI reminiscent of some RPG equipment sheets: one that shows the character, visually, with boxes for rings, armor, shoes, backpack, pouch, weapon slots, and so on. Just so you can see what's equipped and what's available for each slot, and slots that don't even have anything available to equip there. I don't have my heart set on anything specific, I'm just spitballing, and I know that you're pretty far into a major redesign, so feel free to ignore this,
The bigger challenge is that fifth edition has done away with the concept of magic item "slots." You can technically wear ten rings (or more if your race has more than ten fingers) as long as only three of them require attunement. If we made a more visual representation, it would potentially confuse some players and that new way the rules work.
We're definitely looking into how we can best display it long-term, so we'll see what happens.
To be honest I'm disappointed with this feature. I was hoping this would be a tool to help a DM create and organize his homebrew campaigns or official D&D premade campaigns for his weekly tabletop game. Offering tools to create NPCs, Cities, Worlds, Dungeons, Random Encounters, notes on events from each weekly campaign. However it appears to be a very bare bones online communication feature for a DM and his players that don't see each other on a regular basis. I could be totally wrong, but as is I'll never use this feature.
As mentioned in the release notes, the initial pass at campaign management is a foundation off which many other features will build.
The primary purpose come launch in a few weeks is to allow a DM to share content to all the players in a campaign to save purchasing costs for the content.
Many other features will branch off of this after that.
None of these things are Campaign Management though. More like session management. I think you need to rename it.
As said, this is just the beginning. Sessions are part of campaigns. We want to name it based on what it will end up being rather than what it is for this season.
A thought and a question occur. In the DMG there are tables for randomly generating a dungeon. While I have no doubt that these will be in the resource material provided by buying the dmg will we see something akin to the character creator for dungeons? A dungeon creator for lack of a less on the nose name.
*Edited for spelling
We've actually been talking about this concept this very week - it's been added to the list!
Is there any way to restrict what content is shared, e.g. Which books, races, etc?
Is there any way to hide things from search results? E.g. If I buy an OotA and my girlfriend will be DMing, I don't want necessarily to see it show up in my searches. Or is the only way round that toforgo the Legendary bundle and let her buy that book?
We have thought about building in the capability to allow the campaign members to decide what all content should be cross-shared. Like an opt-out by source ability. However, something like that would not be in before launch.
I hate to ask for more clarification, but it's still fuzzy to me :(
Say I have a Master Tier and all content. I create a campaign and my friend, we'll call him Bob, joins with a Hero tier. Can Bob only make characters with my content in the campaign, not elsewhere? (I think that's a yes if I understand correctly) And to follow, can he have like, 50 characters in the campaign? That's the part I'm really fuzzy on I suppose. If the 12 campaign limit is Player based or Character based.
You can have up to 12 characters in a campaign. You can toggle on content sharing for up to 3 campaigns.
That could be be up to 36 characters and 36 players, or it could be 36 characters and 12 players (if those 12 players each played 3 characters). Those players in those 3 campaigns (whether there are 36 or 12 or them), can use all the content from ALL players for their characters in those campaigns (all 36 characters), and they can view that content in the compendium pages (the digital format of the book) or spells, items, monsters listings without restriction.
Basically, we're letting you share all the unlocked content for an entire group (or more than one group) with a large number of players/ characters for only $5.99/ month.
I have around 8 campaigns going on here, but there's a decent chance I have fewer than 36 players, so, can I set up 3 "content sharing campaigns", invite all my players to them, and have them be able to use all my content in the real campaigns?
What you describe should work. In the end, we're giving far more flexibility (and number of players/ characters) than what was originally shared.
We'll keep an eye on demand for adding additional campaigns in the future if needed.
And if I'm DMing, will I be able to disable any material, including Basic Rules material?
We have heard this feedback and will likely include whitelisting sources in the future. It will not be in at launch.
This would be the same as having all the physical books at the table and letting the DM dictate to players what is or isn't allowed - for now, it requires table enforcement.
Context: User queries seeing content across characters in a campaign
We are not allowing all the players in a campaign to see other characters in the campaign to start for a pretty simple (but important) reason - some players have secrets that they don't want shared for the sake of roleplaying.
We plan to add the ability in the near future to share characters in general, and at that point we would allow a player in a campaign to set their display preferences for her character to allow other players to see it.
I got some suggestions about current adventures structure, but I not sure where to post them. At first I really would like to see zones in navigation menu. It would allow fast switching between dungeon parts. Second one - too cool to be released - interactive maps. Just hover on room space and get description and link. And third, but important - appendix with all adventure maps. It so painful to search a map across adventure.
Some good suggestions here - adding these to the list and we'll take a look.
I'm absolutely loving having all the official content at my finger tips, especially the nice adventures with all the links. I also like being able to share character options. However I've noticed one major flaw with the sharing system: My players can read the entire book! I want to share the player options, not give them spoilers. If they want to ruin their own fun they should pay the $25 or $50 to do so. At the very least I'd like to limit what the players can see even if that means blocking off character options from all the adventures.
Whitelisting and blacklisting of content is on the list and will be implemented in the future. This would include official and homebrew content.
In the meantime, hopefully the social contract will kick in...although I empathize that we live in an age of spoilers.
Context: Users referring to poll results Badeye posted above, and the priorities of campaign management
To be transparent, we actually have received far more feedback (both here in the forums and elsewhere) regarding the items on the list above than anything regarding campaign management.
I think much of the confusion revolves around people having different opinions for what "campaign management" is or means.
The feedback we have received on the topic covers a vast array of "wants" that are truly diverse. Most of these I would disagree with being any more a "need" than what others have described as needs. i.e. Each person wants what he or she wants.
I believe a far more valuable exercise would be to try to get feedback on what people are looking for in campaign management. If we can get a "Top 5" list of those things (out of the nearly 100 things I've seen mentioned), then we could potentially make something happen.
It would be tough to even do a poll on it at this point because there are so many potential choices.
Perhaps we can start a thread to collect what features people want to see, then add a poll for the top items to see what wins out.
I'll get one out there. Be sure to let your voice be heard!
Context: Users asking about the release of content management features
That's a little dramatic, but I understand your attempt to draw attention to the sentiment. I never said in my comments above that "we don't have anything because it isn't clear what you guys want" - wasn't my point at all.
We absolutely have things planned for campaign management and I (personally) have said from the very beginning that at launch it will be a skeleton of what it will be.
The point of my asking for consolidated feedback about campaign management at this point is that after reading thousands and thousands of posts with previous feedback, people have very divergent ideas about what "campaign management" means.
In other words, yes, as said all along campaign management as it is now is a skeleton and we have plans to do a great deal with it. Those things that we have planned are likely not going to cover the huge spread of conceptions about what it is, quickly at any rate.
I see people asking for a replacement for Obsidian Portal. I see people asking for the ability to inject notes/ comments into adventures. I see people asking for tooltipping on maps. I see people asking for stream integration. I see people asking for whitelisting/ blacklisting content. And many, many more - all as "campaign management."
I'm working on a way to best allow those divergent ideas within the community to surface and allow the community rate them to inform our plans.
I feel extremely mislead by its title "Campaign Management." Allowing my players to use the core books for free is nice, but at best what you have now is "Player Management"
I need management tools for enemy, map, trap, items and the like before recognizing it as a campaign manager.
I know it's been said a bunch here already, but here I am raising my hand too.
The D&D team decided to call one of the game systems in fifth edition "Downtime Activities."
They did so because that's what would make the most sense to give players an idea of what it is intended for. What we got in the PHB and DMG could have easily been called "A Few Things to Spend Gold and Time on Between Sessions."
The "Downtime Activities" system isn't finished, but it had to have a starting point.
We could have called what we have so far in Campaign Management something like "Connecting and Sharing Content with Players in Your Group," but that's a feature of a broader system. A system that will be built out over time.
And again, I went on record extremely early to try to manage expectations around what would be included as Campaign Management at launch in order to not mislead anyone. You might have missed that, but the intent has never been to mislead.
We'll see what everyone has to say about their ideas for Campaign Management and go from there. I believe we've demonstrated that we engage with the feedback and take actions to make this better. Campaign Management will be no different.
One item to add. The ability to download all the maps to give to the players. It's a bit troublesome to go through each chapter and manually save each image. A zip file containing all the maps, handouts, NPCs would greatly increase the prep time for GMs and to put DDB on the right path towards a better campaign manager.
I get the "play with people who don't want to spoil it" idea, but it's still a lot of players clicking past a lot of content that they don't want to read trying to find a link to the map they do want.
I love that they are in, I would love even more to have a link from the "my campaign" page that would take you straight to those maps. If I could set "my campaign" to be aligned with a particular adventure and make the maps available as a DM-toggle (so they can see where they are and have been but not where they are going) that would be even better.
My players aren't cheaters and don't want to be spoiled at all. But it feels to me like the "my campaign" page is the natural players place to interact with their part of the campaign content, rather than clicking through the whole book.
Still, though, awesome that it's in.
We could do something like this in the future along with whitelisting/ blacklisting content. We'd have the ability to tie a specific adventure to a campaign, and all the maps, etc. would be housed there.
Another thing that will likely make this easier is we will be adding a "player pack" for maps, handouts, etc. to the table of contents page for each adventure soon.
I want a "blank" DM screen that allows me to pick the rules/charts I want to display on it and it allows me to move them around on the screen so I can set up the layout best for me.
We've got that on the list. No ETA, but it's on our radar.
New versions replace the older version in the listing, but all versions are still displayed. Once we open up the ability to add public homebrew content to your collection, people could start using version A, then you change your latest to version B. The problem would be people using version A might like it the way it is - we can't force others to the new version. This is actually the primary reason for versioning in the first place.
If there are issues other than "I don't like the older version," you can contact the moderators for review and possible deletion.
How much ownership do we have over what we publish on Beyond? Why don't we inherently have the ability to remove what we have published?
I feel like these are important questions that should be answered sooner rather than later, especially because there's a financial market behind some of this stuff.
The Terms of Service answer the question for sure. The relevant part:

Are you guys planning on putting Backgrounds in the homebrew area and allowing it to be put in character sheets?
Backgrounds will be available to homebrew. We are also going to allow "on the fly" custom backgrounds in the builder that allows you to choose any two skills, any two languages or tool proficiencies, and any background feature, as per the rules in the PHB.
SK's pretty much correct. It is on my list of improvements for Homebrew, it's just somewhat further down the list.
There are some usability considerations we have to work through, like, what if you tooltip a private spell on a published monster? What do we display to users that don't have access to your private homebrew? Do we limit homebrew tool-tipping to published works only? And the inclusion of homebrew will require some rework to an upcoming plugin to the Editor that allows you to select items and will insert the tooltip for you, so I have to account for that time requirement as well.
None of this is terribly difficult from a technical perspective, mind you, it's just not at the top of our list, atm. And yes, the tag inserted for a homebrew item will be it's unique slug.
Can't create an item to add attack and damage to unarmed attacks or natural weapons. Tried recreating my own version of the Insignia of Claws from Horde of the Dragon Queen and had to choose a damage type. Unarmed attacks can come in multiple damage types, like with aarakocra and tabaxi having slashing instead of bludgeoning. There are also items that can enhance attacks and damage without being specific to a weapon so it's a weird structure to require the damage type when it's the weapon itself that determines that. I can see now why there are gazillions of entries for weapons and armour instead of having just "Weapon +1" as something you add to a specific weapon.
The ability to do that is in the works - we've got it working for the actual Insignia of Claws, but haven't turned it on for the homebrew forms yet.
This is going to take some explaining so bear with me.
One of my characters, Varek for the staff that can look through my characters, has several homebrewed bows that I've made as recreations of 3.5's composite bows. I've added them, they work just fine, they add strength and dex to damage rolls, all the math works out perfectly. Varek has a +3 in dex and a +3 in strength so all the bows list the damage die+6. However, the reason for this post is that the normal Longbow, not my homebrewed creations, lists the damage as 1d8+6. I've checked with my other characters and there's no discrepancy there, the math is just fine for my Barbarian wielding a longbow. Varek's Crossbow lists the correct damage but Varek's Shortbow also lists +6 to damage. My concern is that somehow the item Composite Longbow and Composite Shortbow I created, based off the original versions of those weapons but adding Str to damage as well, have corrupted the normal versions of those weapons for characters that have the homebrewed items equipped.
I'm afraid the issue here is that you're trying to do something the game technically doesn't support.
There's a reason that composite bows don't exist in fifth edition. The way this is working on your character, you're getting both your Dexterity and Strength modifier to damage, which shouldn't be happening (Dexterity used to not be added by default to ranged attacks in 3.5).
If this is something you want to have, we will definitely provide a way for you to override the damage of that particular attack to have it display correctly on your character sheet (coming soon), but it won't be possible through the homebrew system.
Quick question, if I homebrew something, could I then use a tooltip to link to it? For example, if I'm using homebrew in a PbP campaign, could I say, "You have found the (magicitem)Amulet of Rapha(/magicitem). Congratulations!" (Incorrect bracket used on purpose)
Would it need to be published first?
CRich,
We currently don't support tooltips for homebrew data as the names are not unique. However, we will be updating the tooltip system to use the unique slug for homebrew versus just the name. I don't think that update will be in for launch, but it is on our list!
Quick question: I've created some homebrew spells that are in my campaign, but I did not publish them. Should my players be able to search for them? Neither they nor I could see them using the global search tool. I added them to one of my players' character sheet manually, and he could see it on his sheet. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Private homebrew will not be available in Global Search. You would always have to navigate to those at your homebrew/creations on the site.
Any PC's in your campaign should see them in the list of spells that they can add on their character sheet in the Add Spells option.
While this is excellent to hear, where do full-classes land? I have a few players utilizing DMs Guild classes that just won't be able to use this wonderful tool :(
Full classes are extremely challenging for us to code to anticipate, since they could literally be anything. The existing base classes (especially once the mystic and artificer are out) cover so many character types that we don't see much value in spending months to build out a system that would allow for that kind of customization.
We plan on having some polls on favorite DMs Guild base classes and create the most popular ones for use in D&D Beyond in the future..
Any better word on when custom races, classes, subclasses, and feats will be possible?
I won't really ever give dates until we know things for sure (this is software development and talking about dates too early is always a bad idea).
I can, however, share that those things are on the extremely short list of priorities to incorporate. i.e. We are working on those as soon as this launch thing is done.
Thanks!
P.S. We will not be doing homebrew core classes to start for a variety of reasons. A couple of the more prominent being that the existing core classes (especially once you add in the mystic and artificer) cover so many of the bases already and the complexity of anticipating what players could do with homebrew core classes is immense. If we see strong community feedback that core class homebrew is worth that effort, we will certainly respond to the feedback accordingly.
Elven Chain is now considered "proficient" for all characters. As part of this, we have added a new modifier type that can also be used for homebrew - Proficiency > Self will make characters proficient for the one item that has that modifier.
This is all super awesome, thanks Badeye. Can't wait for next Tuesday. One thing I wanted to raise, maybe I'm missing the feature where it's listed, but there's seemingly no ability to add weight to custom items. Is that something already implemented that I can't find? Or is that forthcoming?
Magic item weights are tough since they're not provided. We are, however, working on a way for you to edit/ add weights for all of your equipment. It will be available soon!
My current character, Stevanus Aurelius. An Inquisitor, which is a Homebrew Rogue Archetype. Akin to the Arcane trickster, except Cleric-based. That's right, I'm gonna make a homebrew sub-class, because I can. :) I promise, that will be opened up for all, soon-ish.
Context: users discussing the fact that they cannot use anything but SDR data as templates for homebrew
We were discussing just today on how to implement this. The main issue is, as listed above, that you add non SRD data to a homebrew item and then try to publish it.
The approach we're considering would be to not let you publish a homebrew item if it has non SRD material, thus restricting it to only ever be private, but sharable in your campaigns.

Never fear, we are back from PAX and hitting the ground running. I can confirm that I, personally, am now working on additional Homebrew features and will be my primary focus until we get the new types (Backgrounds, Feats, Races, and Sub-classes) released. In the midst of that work, we will also be tackling the issue raised in this thread. The wait won't be much longer.
BadEye will be sharing more details as we get closer to releasing features.
Context: User asking about the inclusion of UA classes in DDB
I can confirm we will include the mystic, artificer, and revised ranger at some point in the near future. We'll share more details on that when we can.
Thank you very much for tackling this! I understand how massive an undertaking it is to compile the official quotes of staff as they come in. We'll try to toss in some official content we spot from time to time for you to update.
D&D Beyond Staff Quotes
Hey everyone, Veterans and Adventures alike!
