I was a little disappointed they started at level 2 with what seems like quite a bit of backstory already built up, since I was looking forward to watching this party grow from session 0. But it does add to the mystery going forward.
They have mentioned in some occasions the last night and stuff like that. I think they had a short game session just to get the party together, and lvl them up quickly to 2nd lvl. As a DM, I'd do the same. The 1st lvl is meant to get in the mood I think, the real fun can start only at lvl 2 with enough HP to beat more interesting encounters. :)
I don't disagree in theory, but the lone combat encounter from this session was pretty tame.
Whatever gets us to level 3 quickly so we can find out the rest of folks' subclass choices!
Critical Role has never been all about the combat. In fact, one of the reasons why Matt Mercer is such an effective DM (especially for streaming) is specifically because of the way that he uses combat as a narrative tool, not for action sequences. The fight might've been lame, but the point was to put these three originally disparate groups together into one party. Especially because he couldn't guarantee that they would all come together on their own, as long as he could herd them to the circus, he could bind them by the fight itself. He now has the effect he wanted in the fiirst place, which is to force them to stay in the area while he presents them with a variety of quests and adventures that are going to tend towards being lower level. In all honesty, it's probably the smartest play possible.
Said the fight was "tame". Just simply to point out that a level 1 party would've handled it fine. I have no problem with the encounter, was just reiterating my point that I'm a bit sad not to see the party grow from level 1. But it's a very small regret.

I would have liked it simply because when getting into DMing Session 0/1 was the most terrifying part. To see someone whom many consider one of, if not the best DM start a game would have been nice. It's really the first hump to get over in becoming a DM, I myself and I'm sure many others get so nervous before that first session, and if it's the first time DMing ever might not know where to start and honestly there isn't a ton out there for how people start their campaigns. How do you bring these people/characters into the world? How do they react? What makes them take interest in each other or anything for that matter?
Edit: regardless it's getting a bit off topic and not so much about the show......Is it Thursday yet? :)
Did anyone see Talks Machina where Laura was upset that someone called her greedy? For the quickest second, I wondered if she read it here, but then I figured she probably gets that a lot, so it's unlikely that this thread is what she was referring to. I'd still make a case for money-grubbing, which isn't so much about desiring wealth as much as it is about gathering and collecting, but it was really funny to watch.
One of the players, I think Sam mentions this, that they all are using different colored dice for specific types of damage or whatever...I was watching carefully and I know with all that was going on with the confusion of playing new characters and playing live that it was not always clear if they were using the right damage dice. Marissa's Monk on the final flurry of blows looked like she rolled d8's. Did she use 8 sided d4's? Just curious as I know they exist.

I think it was Sam questioning Laura using different dice for everything she does and Travis saying something about it

Yeah. Laura is almost on an OCD level with her dice (she apparently told Sam that he would have to borrow from the bag if he needed more), and Sam mentioned it because he wasn't aware of it before, which Travis joked to Sam about because of how ridiculous it can get. Sam actually has one set of seven dice (so does Travis), which they mentioned on last night's Talks Machina. There was a discussion about it because of sneak attack, and how he's going to need more d6s (Liam said he'd buy Sam a set of more d6s).
I'm not sure about Marisha's use of damage dice on her flurry of blows. I know they have access to those dice (I believe from Gil), but I've never been one to pay that close attention to their dice. I mostly trust that they know what they're doing, or at least are doing things in good faith.
I just started with this new campaign (got into CR too late and not near enough free time to watch the old one, so it was perfect timing for me for a new campaign!) and I love it!! My wife and I had watch the 1st episode of the original campaign, and she wasn't real into it, but this campaign hooked us both hard! Of course, Jester stands out as one of my favorite character, but they are all a load of fun.
What I absolutely loved the most in the first episode as their reactions to each other's characters. As soon as someone started describing their character for the first time, it was a blast seeing the rest of them get so excited! Fun stuff!!
Catching up on yesterday’s episode and cannot stop laughing. Jester, Nott, and Beau are just so so funny. Running up and down the stairs just because, it’s hilarious.

Oh no! I hope she wasn't upset due to me. It's not even my native language, I thought first that greedy is just an objective but still kind word. :(
And I still believe that she'll get really into this new role rather sooner than later. I'd be more shocked if she could play an opposite kind of character with just the same passion. That'd be more weird.
And anyway, what I love the most in this show is that they stream real people. It's more reality show than any other. Here I learned to love the actors in parallel with their characters. I wish to see everyone on the show as honest as possible.
Nevertheless, probably I'll watch this episode of Talks Machina several times in my shame. :S
I didn't watch the live stream so not sure if it was announced on there but Laura is going to be at C2E2 here in Chicago on April 6-8 at McCormick Place. It has her listed as autographs and panels.

Honestly, it seems likely it was you. I know they're using DDB now, but I somehow doubt that they're actually going through the forums. It would be super cool if they were. I think it would be a lot of fun to be able to interact with them on here, especially if we, as a community, could create a positive environment. That being said, I can almost guarantee that they don't come on here. They probably digest audience feedback on Twitter, so I wouldn't worry about it. Like I said, it's probably a criticism that she got a lot there. It's like how critical people are of Marisha because of her character choices for Keyleth, even though player and character are two separate entities (any decent actor will tell you that).
During the opening credits, I was wondering if anyone is a good lip reader. It is clear Sam says he is sorry he is late and later Laura after her critical fail says like "oh no Please Matt!" But what do you think Matt says?

Matt: "Let me see. So... As *** emerges from the shadow" And then something about a creature. :)
Anyone know if they will share their character sheets anywhere? I know we can see their basic stats during the show, but wondering about everything else.

It's my understanding that they likely will. In the D&D Beyond monthly update, he said the feature was being rolled out soon (along with copying and transfering characters, which I'm excited about as a GM), and he was curious about how many hits Fjord was going to get (he also referenced a character from another game I don't watch). After all, Curse does have a long-term sponsorship (not sure what that means) with Critical Role.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
Wave!
So we have the full image of the new group.

By the way. zoom in on Travis' Fjord characters face. Then google Ivar from the show Vikings...

So what kind of creature do you think the "Fiend" might be?
She/Her College Student Player and Dungeon Master
I've been trying to figure that out also. but good thing we have Nott and Jester are to blow the case wide open
