What's in Monsters of the Multiverse?
The first thing you’ll notice is an array of updated races, some with modified or improved abilities, and some with new ones! Those little kobolds have just become a lot mightier! You'll also find monsters have been improved to make the lives of Dungeon Masters easier when running combat. For example, some monsters have seen changes to streamline spellcasting. Others have received buffs to their damage and resilience to help you better challenge your adventurers. New and updated lore also shifts focus away from any one particular world and instead toward the wider Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. All of this combines to present a variety of options that empower DMs and players to tell the stories they want to tell!

What is going to happen if I own all of the existing content from Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and don't buy Monsters of the Multiverse?
You won’t need to take any action on older content, as it will not be removed from your account, be hidden from you, or have its statistics changed! You will notice, however, older content being designated as legacy content. For example, a legacy badge (LegacyThis doesn't reflect the latest rules and lore.Learn More) can be seen when navigating to a monster’s statistics page or when hovering over a monster tooltip.
You will also see race naming conventions updated to denote “(Legacy)” on the Races page and a legacy badge appearing next to old subraces on race pages. In the character builder, old races can be identified by the book source shown below their name.
Will two versions of every monster be maintained on D&D Beyond?
If you own the old content and purchase the new content, yes, you will have two different versions of official content. Older content has been designated as legacy content.
Will the character races in Monsters of the Multiverse be available in addition to the old versions?
Character races presented in this new book are new versions of existing character races. Purchasing Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse will not replace older character races, but rather, will provide new ones with updates compared to the originals. If you want to use the new version of the tabaxi, for example, you will need to purchase the new book, or purchase the tabaxi character race from the book’s additional purchase options in our Marketplace.
If you already own a character race that has been updated in the new title, you will continue to have access to them in their current state; that character race will not be changed or updated except to designate it as legacy content.
Will I be able to share older content or access older content in a campaign?
Yes! If you are a Master-tier subscriber and own the older content, you can still share it in new and existing campaigns. Similarly, if you are accessing shared content in a campaign from a Master-tier subscriber, that content will still be accessible.
Will I still have access to a character created using Volo's Guide to Monsters or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes?
Yes! If you own that book you will still have access to that race and character. Any existing characters will not be changed with the release of Monsters of the Multiverse. Players who purchase Monsters of the Multiverse will be able to update their characters themselves by selecting the new version of a race in the character builder.
If I want one of my characters to use the new content in Monsters of the Multiverse, but not another, will that be possible?
If your Dungeon Master allows it, then yes. If the game hasn’t started yet, this would be perfect to bring up during your session zero.
I built an encounter with monsters from my Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide to Monsters purchases. Will that still be usable after May 17 if I don't buy Monsters of the Multiverse?
Absolutely! Your previously owned content is not being removed from your account. Your encounter, and the monsters in it, will remain intact. In the Encounters tool, you may notice a legacy badge (LegacyThis doesn't reflect the latest rules and lore.Learn More) appearing next to monsters’ names to identify them as content from older books.
Will I have to purchase Monsters of Multiverse on D&D Beyond even if I already own Volo’s Guide to Monsters and/or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes?
Whatever book content you already own on each digital platform will still be accessible for your use, and to gain access to both the new and updated content in Monsters of Multiverse, you will need to purchase Monsters of Multiverse.

The line being described between update and errata here seems rather sus.
I don't mind that this new book is coming out and being displayed in addition to the previous versions rather than replacing them but if that's going to be the way dndbeyond is going to do things now can I please get back my wayfinder's guide warforged and my -2 strength kobold? I see no functional difference between those changes that were taken away from me when new content came out and these changes that are considered separate for reasons comprehensible as if a Great Old One passed them along.
I'm definitely in the camp of it being a cash grab if there aren't a bunch of a new monsters being released. People who've already spent 50+ dollars on Vollo's and Mordenkainen's are getting screwed over real hard here. My group has spent hundreds on this site and the books and now we're being asked for more money just to get race updates and some minor monster updates. I love DND Beyond, but this is definitely leaving me pretty salty. We're definitely not thrilled.
This is not a DnD Beyond issue. This is WotC and Jeremy Crawford looking for the cash grab. D&D Beyond can only put out what Woke WotC gives them. The material WotC has put out over the last 18+ months has been garbage, but D&D Beyond has nothing to do with any of that. They simply add what is given to them, nothing more, nothing less.
WotC is not their parent company. Wizards of the Coast has no ownership of DnDBeyond, which is owned by Fandom. Fandom and DnDBeyond license 5e material for use on their site. They are a separate company with no say in this matter.
The person you're responding to had it right: Be as pissed as you want, but take that to Wizards. Beyond is just trying to figure out how to technically implement what they've been given no choice in doing by another company they license material from in order to operate.
Yeah, DnDB is basically left holding the bag by WoTC. Already as a digital platform, they had to look at how the paper version was introduced months before the digital, saw that what basically is a big update to existing material would have to be pushed out, and the old material would still have to be made available contradicting years of the policy of overwriting old material when it was updated. Often leading to weeks or months of complaining by their customers who wanted to have access to the old material as well. They can't win, in the short term, in a situation like this, they can only limit the damage.
this is helpful thank you
That's a fair point. I should direct my ire to the appropriate place.
I would agree 100% except that people will still have access to the original. Still it would be nice
As a DM I am pretty much forced to use this, disappointed in WotC as they said they would not do this specifically!
Here's hoping the interface and changes they have made to the fundamentals of their game don't make it too hard for dndbeyond to add it to their site and app.
Will Volo's Guide and Mordenkainen's Tome be unavailable for purchase once Monster of the Multiverse is released? Confirmation would be nice. I want to have the lore information from those two books and I need to know if I should rush to buy them now or if I can buy them later.
Yes. These books will be available. The purpose of this book is to act as a preview of the direction D&D plans on heading in for their 2024 next edition. Right now WotC is using the old Italian cook's method of revamping. Throw it at the wall and see if it sticks. Are players interested in separating race and culture? (not a problem in my book). Can WotC quit developing cultures all together and just give us stats? (That's a problem for me.) Do players want backgrounds that give them feats? Expect some wild and weird behavior from WotC over the next few months as they try and figure out what changes people are willing to pay for, and which they're not. Do we want flying races? Bunnies? Combat free adventures? Classic settings? Outer space? Are we willing to replace the traditional pub with a coffee shop? Should the next "home" world for D&D stay Forgotten realms or move towards Alice in Wonderland, or Hogwarts, or steampunk, or anime, or return to something like Greyhawk or Krynn.
Are you reading my mind?
Hello fellow DnD beyonders, this has probably been answered elsewhere but i can't use the search tool within forums to find this info about the new monsters of the multiverse book.
As i am a fan of dnd since 2nd edition, i am however not a fan of the new **edited word** dnd concept.
That being said, IF i buy the new book, will we have the option to select which version of the races individually of it will be either all updated races or none?
It is an easy thing to do that with physical book but with the app it will be harder to individually filter what i give access to my players.
Yes you can. It’s stated in the article. Also “woke”? What’s “woke” about this? It’s mechanical changes with non universe specific lore.
The "woke"-ness I assume he's referring to is probably attributed to the exchange of races getting boosts to specific modifiers for +2 and +1, or +1 to 3, (which he alluded to in his post) as well as including the preferred pronouns and removal of set alignments within official D&D material, which is a mechanical change attributed to the way the real world is evolving.
That is the only example that I could find that could be called "woke"
The FAQ they put out clarifies that if you already have the older Volo's Guide etc. versions of a race or monster, then you'll still have those after buying the new book, but it's unclear yet how that will be presented in the UI. We don't know for example if the updated races will appear as variants, or if the old races will be renamed.
I would probably wager on the latter, as this is how DDB used to handle Unearthed Arcana content, for example the UA version of summon undead was listed as "summon undead (UA)". Of course it's also potentially the worst option, as it means that you'll see double the races and monsters so I'm hoping I'm wrong and they'll display it some other way.
My personal preference would be for it to appear like older versions of homebrew, i.e- you can see that there have been previous version of the race/monster and view them if you want to, but otherwise you're taken to the latest version when you search.
They may have a toggle set for Pre-2022 Update Races, similar to Eberon and Critical Role content, etc.
What i referred to was the new way dnd is headed by modifying content because ppl get offended that a drow elf is genetically more agile than let's say a bugbear, or that a lvl 1 giant is inherently stronger than a lvl 1 gnome. I get the genetic vs ambitions choices and i don't mind a stone giant wizard because it can live the dream, but let's not forget that the stats rolled and ability score increases forge those characters.
Anyway i didn't want to start a whole discussion about the social concept we have in real society and am sorry if i offended anyone, that was not the goal. I was looking for an answer plain and simple
I honestly think it’s really unfair to make the previous owners of Volo’s and Tome of Foes buy Multiverse just to get the updates. If these are the new and updated versions of these races forever they should just be updated on the website. I shouldn’t have to buy an update to something I own. That’s like a game company charging you for the rebalance patch they’re applying to their own game.
Edit: the amount of comments saying DDB isn’t a WotC company that were made before that announcement seem to lack any teeth now. Since that announcement has been made what do you say about us voicing our displeasure in these comments? They seem to fit in to the right place now.
So, why did it take so long to add the information about VGtM and MToF becoming unavailable? It seems like Beyond had the information for over a month before adding it to the website at all.
Also, I'm amused by the decision to reference MToF in the introduction, considering. "Golly," says the hypothetical newbie on May 18, "Mordenkainen wrote another book too? I want both of them! I'll have a complete Mordenkainen collection!"
