You once were a chef, the king of food. Either you were an artisan chef with a fine sense of taste, a master chef who knows dozens on dozens of recipes by heart, or a cook at the mess hall, expertly serving food quickly and on the double. You understand that food has a voice; it can express moods with the right combinations of ingredients, or bring people together with a peaceful meal. What brought you out of the kitchen? A rare ingredient? Maybe an upper chef decided it was time for you to go? Or maybe you wanted to go on an adventure to pad out your recipe book? Regardless of your reasons, your cooking and food handling skills will prove vital to an adventuring party.
- Skill Proficiencies: Insight, Performance
- Tool Proficiencies: Chef's Utensils, either Herbalism Kit or Brewer's Supplies
- Languages: 1 language of your choice, from which you derive your culinary terminology and techniques.
- Equipment: Cook's Utensils, a cooking pot, a small knife, 2 full waterskins, 10 rations, and a book of your recipes.
Feature: Tasteful Sentiments
You can use food to communicate more than just good flavor; you can produce intellectually meaningful dishes which can send a message, however simple and abstract. At the DM's discretion, you can be persuasive, deceptive, and even intimidating attempts by simply feeding a person a meal, or by preparing it in front of them. You may also treat public preparation of food as a performance to entertain.
Suggested Characteristics
Chefs vary widely in temperaments. As professionals, they can be fickle and perfectionists who run their team ragged. However, they are also dedicated to their vocation and skill to ultimately fill up bellies and provide hospitality.

Posted Jul 4, 2023Sorry for the necro, but you forgot to add clothing type and gold. Adding a backpack full of supplies would also be better than giving rations. The mess kit (common in backpacks) and cook's utensils make up for knives and cooking pots, so there is no need to add them separately.
If you want to go extra, you could add a number of spice and compound containers with 10–20 uses each (either set the number or leave it to a dice roll like 4+1d8 or something) that the player could choose themselves.
For example, some spices and compounds are: salt, sugar, or honey; pepper; chili; sweet paprika; dried and crushed garlic powder or loaves; saffron; curry; cinamon; vanilla; dried oregano; dried basil; caraway seeds; dried majoram; dried parsley leaves; ginger; mustard seeds.
Edit: also nature makes more sense than insight since it allows you knowledge of plants and animals. It probably also makes sense to give them the chef feat for expertise at cooking and bonus healing given with cooked food.
