Bastard Child (Clandestine Variant) Image

You were born into a noble family through unconventional means, and were left to sit on the sidelines as a result. Whether the result of a scandalous affair, or a whirlwind but unsustainable romance, you are considered a stain on one of noble parent's lineage. Having been raised in a remote corner of the world by either your lowborn parent or a trusted friend of your noble parent, only a handful of people know the truth of your lineage. Although you did not have access to many of the privileges of wealth, you have received some benefit from your heritage, either from your noble parent or the patron they left in charge of you. Perhaps you have been trained in combat, or diplomacy, or perhaps you were simply granted a better education than most lowborn children.

Work with your DM to come up with an appropriate title and determine how much authority that title carries. A noble title doesn’t stand on its own—it’s connected to an entire family. Is your family old and established, or was your title only recently bestowed? How much influence do they wield, and over what area? What kind of reputation does your family have among the other aristocrats of the region? How do the common people regard them? What is your relationship with the various members of the family? Do you know much about them, and do they know anything about you? Were you told of your heritage as a child? Or did you learn of it only as an adult? Do you aspire to take the noble title that rightfully belongs to your bloodline? Or do you want nothing to do with nobility?

Does your family have a coat of arms? An insignia family members might wear on a signet ring? Particular colors they wear all the time? An animal regarded as a symbol of your line or even a spiritual member of the family? Do you wear the symbols of your family, either discreetly or openly?

What are you doing now? Is it related to the wants and/or needs of your parents, or another family member? Or are you pursuing your own goals and aspirations? Do either of your parents support you from afar? If so, how? Do they require anything in return?

These details help establish your family and their title(s) as features of the world of the campaign.

Suggested Characteristics

Hidden away from your family, and kept from places where your true identity, if revealed, would leave a black smear on your noble parent's reputation. Perhaps you have become embittered by the rejection of your noble parent and/or their treatment of you. Perhaps you couldn't care less what any noble thinks. Perhaps you have aspirations to prove your worth, and make your noble parent regret ever casting you aside. Or maybe you have more modest goals, and aim only to give your lowborn family a more comfortable life.
