Most people have the luxury of beginning their lives on the first page of an empty journal. But for us, we’ve had our entire existence torn from the annals of both history and memory. From today on, everyone will see you as an unpenned tome. But don't fool yourself into thinking they won’t notice the missing pages. Welcome to the Foreign Legion.
—Staff Sergeant Redbeard,
Kalegnacari Foreign Legion
The Kalegnac Empire (kæl-en-ak) has experienced unprecedented growth in the magical arms and industry sectors. Part of what fuels their expansionist regime is the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion. Dissidents, criminals, and political rivals often find themselves here, but the bulk of the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion is made up of the forces from conquered nations.
Anyone deemed an enemy of the Empire, but still representing an appreciable skill set, is sent to the city of Raash Kadir for processing. Between the time they enter, and the time they leave, all memory of their life’s social experiences are destroyed. Going further, scrying from that moment back to their beginning, any person they were ever in contact with is stripped of the memory of that individual. Written histories across the world show blank spaces where there should be names. People recall deeds good and ill, but never a perpetrator.
As those who have been sent inside are ushered out of Raash Kadir, they are utterly alone with the exception of a horribly visible scar across their forehead. There is a home however, a brotherhood of individuals who have walked the same terrifying road out of that city. And ever do the ranks of the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion swell.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two skills indicative of a past life befitting your player class.
- Tool Proficiencies: Choose one tool proficiency. Work with your DM to choose this if you wish, as it is one of the only indicators of who you once were.
- Languages: Choose one language. Work with your DM to choose these if you wish, as it is one of the only indicators of who you once were.
- Equipment: A set of grey twill trousers and shirt, an oiled canvas traveling cloak, two vouchers from the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion (good to exchange for a set of artisan’s tools for which you are proficient or a healer’s kit), and a pouch containing 5 gold.
The Kalegnacari Foreign Legion has seen many through the doors of Raash Kadir. To help those who now find themselves lost find their way, they’ve designed an informal interview. While not binding, each Blank Slate put through the interview is given an assessment and a suggested cohort to apply to within the legion.
| d6 | Cohort Assessment |
|---|---|
| 1 | I was told I’m well suited to the front lines…whatever that means (1st Cohort, Infantry) |
| 2 | I’m comfortable with small numbers and quick action (2nd Cohort, Skirmishers and Hunters) |
| 3 | Doesn’t matter how sharp a spear is if the haft is weak (3rd Cohort, Support) |
| 4 | There’s a wealth of knowledge in this head, I just wish I could remember where it was from (4th Cohort, Logistics) |
| 5 | Despite what may have put me here, if it meant justice was served, I’m at peace with that (5th Cohort, Military Police) |
| 6 | Way finding isn’t’ so much my thing, but way making… (6th Cohort, Artillery) |
A small seal branded into your forehead at the focal point of your scars denotes induction into the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion. This seal grants you access to any Foreign Legion outpost or armoury, and all but guarantees you audience with a commander or representative appropriate to your station within the Foreign Legion. Requisition from these unit’s stores is always an option, providing of course you can substantiate the expenditure of resources.
Citizens of the Kalegnac Empire treat you favorably as someone who has paid their due for whatever misdeeds their past life may have entailed. For victims of those sent to Raash Kadir however, there’s a gap in their memory regarding who wronged them, and good chance they're now a legionnaire.
Suggested Characteristics
Whatever crimes or allegiances you held in the past warranted death, but competence in your field made you eligible for processing at Raash Kadir. The privilege of living still comes at the cost of who you once were.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | There’s a chance for a new beginning here, who I am is determined only by what I do from here on out. |
| 2 | It’s clear I wasn’t a citizen, so I don’t owe the Kalegnacari Empire anything. For all I know they wiped my people off the map. |
| 3 | This is too good to be true. There’s a whole world of suckers out there, and I’ve got a guarantee that none of them know I’m coming. |
| 4 | I’m fairly certain I did something terrible. The things I know don’t come from an honest living. |
| 5 | I could care less who I was before. These are the cards I’ve been dealt, and I’m going to play to win. |
| 6 | I’ve been robbed of who I was. I’ve got scars I can’t explain, and a mind to make sure I’m compensated. |
| 7 | There has to be limits to what could be erased. I aim to find something if anything of who I was. |
| 8 | I know too much about the inner workings of the Empire. I think I may have been a political rival… |
| d6 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Redemption. I may have done horrible things, or I may have not. But I can choose to atone for the sins of my brothers and sisters if not my own. (Good) |
| 2 | Stability. I can’t condone what was done to me, but there is no denying that the Legion has brought peace to lands that would be otherwise rife with dissidents. (Lawful) |
| 3 | Harbinger. Let me be an example of what the Empire has wrought. You reap what you sow. (Chaotic) |
| 4 | Rancor. I’m more than happy to feed the machine that made me. Who’s to say I used to be any worse than you. (Evil) |
| 5 | Independence. I’ve paid my debt, and I don’t owe anybody anything. (Neutral) |
| 6 | Family. I don’t want to imagine where I would be if the Legion hadn’t taken me in. The Empire can kick rocks, but the Legion are my brothers and sisters. (any) |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | On the road outside of Raash Kadir, I felt unburdened, like I had nothing holding me back. An open road before me will always remind me of that. |
| 2 | I’d do anything for my brothers and sisters in the Legion. They’re the only ones that know what I’ve been through. |
| 3 | No one deserves what we went through. If I can stem the tide of people walking out the doors of Raash Kadir, I will. |
| 4 | These tattoos, markings, and scars are all I have of my former life. I don’t know what they mean, or where I got them, but at some point in time I earned them. What I learn from them, I learn about myself. |
| 5 | I will carve my name into the history books with the deeds I accomplish. I will be remembered. |
| 6 | I owe everything I am now to the Legion. They gave me a reason to move forward. Only a fool would question my loyalty. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | Whatever I was before, I wasn’t Kalegnacari. Social norms and platitudes are a waste of my time. |
| 2 | I can’t hide the scars of my past life, and you don’t get what I’ve got from book keeping. |
| 3 | To say I have sticky fingers is an understatement. Seriously, I surprise myself! |
| 4 | I’ve got a lot of hate and anger bottled up for a person I can’t remember. When someone gets on my nerves, it’s tempting to tap the keg. |
| 5 | I think I had some bad habits from my past life. They tend to come up at inopportune times. |
| 6 | Brothers and sisters in the Legion have told me to watch my mouth, but does no one else see the potential for abuse in this authoritarian regime? |
You turned your back on the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion. Whatever sense of family and community they offered could never warrant serving the nation that stripped you of your life. Whatever your identity was before, good or bad, it was yours. No one had the right to take that from you, and nothing the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion can say will make that right.
If your character has the Blank Slate background, you may select this back ground feature instead of I am Legion.
Those who oppose the Kalegnacari Empire in deed or principle, are divided in two categories. Those to be put to death, and those for processing at Raash Kadir. You would never have been blanked if you weren’t at the very least competent in your field. Having forsaken the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion, you wield that competence for a purpose known only to you. The citizens of the Kalegnacari Empire nervously pander to you. They are loath to make themselves the subject of your ire lest they become a vivid memory in your fresh mind. The Legionnaires of the Kalegnacari Foreign Legion however, treat you only slightly better than that of a traitor. You have turned your back on everything their community represents, and that is not a slight they will easily forgive.
