Forced to be fodder in scavenging dungeons for slavers, you learned the art of surviving in dangerous situations. No one but you cared whether you lived or died while retrieving treasures for them. At some point you may have found an opportunity to escape your slaver through your own ingenuity or with help from a found piece of treasure, another person or entity, or maybe you decided to finally rebel and injure/kill your oppressors. Regardless of how, you have earned your freedom, but not before learning some useful dungeoning skills.
*** This version just includes some things that work in the background when adding to the character sheet. I realized too late that I forgot to add the option to select the suggested characteristics in the sheet. This may or may not be important to some.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from Investigation, Perception, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Survival
- Tool Proficiencies: Cartographer's Tools and Thieves' Tools
- Languages: You don't get a single language but pick up on key words from several monster dungeon-inhabiting monsters. Whenever a monster is encountered in a dungeon, there is a 50% chance you pick up on key words. Among the key words are "attack", "boss", "scared", "graveyard", "help", and "bones". The rest of the key words are up to the DM in context of the speech.
- Equipment: Cartographer's Tools, Thieves' Tools, set of traveler's clothes, pouch containing 10GP
As a lifelong treasure hunter, you have an innate sense of direction in certain dungeons. As such, you are never lost and can generally follow the group's past movements to previous points in the dungeon.
In the dingy darkness of a tomb or dungeon, when all else can find nothing, you mange to find something of value.
Suggested Characteristics
The table for the criminal background can be a good reference for traits and motivations with some modification as needed to fit your needs.
Really consider your character's story and how they managed to become free from their slavers and how they intend to use the skills they gained. For instance, you might have snuck past your oppressors and just run away versus finding some hefty weapon and fighting for your freedom. Perhaps you earned your freedom by paying off some debt to your slaver, or maybe someone rescued you and you feel you owe them your life, joining them on their adventure. Be creative!
